Vibrant green eyes opened, a cheerful grin on the young Pulsian's face as she stared up at the sky, staring at the puffy clouds that drifted by. As her eyes then lowered, her face turned from happy to be alive, to very…confused. It was then she heard a sound like some sort of airship or vehicle coming towards her, glancing down she noticed some sort of blue street below her feet and she quickly stepped backwards several feet to avoid being run over with a slight squeak as she wasn't used to this type of world. It was so similar to Eden, just without battle on every corner and Pulse critters stalking the streets. Glancing around at the bright city, Vanille's eyes widened at everything. 'Am I…missing something?' she thought to herself as she looked around. This had to be Cocoon…but how could it be? Cocoon had been crystallized and fallen…this couldn't be Cocoon at all. This had to be…no way. 'Gran Pulse?' her face fell to a rather disappointed expression as she looked around at her, well it sure wasn't her home, it was like ending up on a completely different world once again. Why oh why did this always happen to her? And where was Fang?
Turning, she started walking, hoping to find someone who could tell her what this place was even called and where she was. Was all of Gran Pulse like this? Or was it just one city? Frowning as she slowly walked, arms swaying lightly at her sides, she started at the ground, more at the tips of her shoes as she tried to remember Pulse as it was before. Wild, untamed, not a sturdy building in sight. This was just too much to take in all at once, and as much as she liked to see people getting back on their feet after all they'd been through with the relocation process…she didn't like this city thing one bit. Sure Pulse was going to be restored to its former glory someday, but this was too over the top. Eyes then flickered upwards at the tall buildings around her, she wondered how Fang took all of this. She could only imagine her best friend being slightly furious about all of this. Wait, scratch that. Not slightly furious, Fang would be in a fiery rage. It was a surprise that Vanille wasn't throwing a fit of her own, just showing her disappointment in it all with her expression as she continued to walk slowly, not knowing where she was going and not really caring at this point.
As nice as it was to be alive – again – it just wasn't the same. She didn't even know how long it had been, for all she knew Snow and Serah could be married, old and have children…it could be even past that. She didn't dare think of her friends as dead, but there was the possibility. You just couldn't rule anything out until you were certain. Seeing a few people walking down the streets in the very Cocoon-like clothing – a few people looking as if they belonged to PSICOM – Vanille picked up her pace and walked up to a woman maybe a few years older than her. The woman took a few glanced at Vanille's outfit, looking just as confused as Vanille did. "Excuse me." Her bright accented voice spoke, almost making the confusion on the stranger's face increase. "But can you tell me where I am? How long as it been since the fal'Cie on Cocoon died?" she asked pretty bluntly before the woman blinked at her, taking a moment to collect her thoughts. "This is…Academia, the capital city around here. It's been about three years since all that L'Cie business went down and the fal'Cie had been destroyed." With that said and Vanille being informed, the young Pulsian nodded as if to say thank you and the stranger took her leave.
Three years eh? That wasn't bad at all! That gave her some hope in finding her friends alive and well. Speaking of Hope…smiling a bit to herself, Vanille wondered if the silver haired boy had made amends with his father and lived a good life for the past three years here on Pulse. And what of Snow? Were he and Serah married yet? Sazh and Dajh, were they happy? Lightning…was she still punching people? Giggling a bit to herself, still rather disappointed about Gran Pulse's makeover, she started walking again, humming quietly to herself as she still had no idea where she was going in this city, Academia, but she hoped that someone could tell her where to go to find someone she knew. Perhaps Lightning was working with her military group again? If she could find the soldier, or someone who knew something, she could easily find someone from there. Or perhaps it was best to find Fang first. Oh there were just so many things to do! 'I've got the time, no focus to worry about…no problem!' she thought with a bright smile on her face as she continued to stroll down the street, no longer staring at the ground but keeping her head held high now. This may not have been the home she remembered and cherished, but she was alive, wasn't that good enough? It'd have to be, there was nothing she could do now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 1025 Muse: Great! "Agh...not again."
Hope Estheim stared from underneath silvery bangs at the cell phone he'd just freed from his jacket pocket and at that same name and number that had hovered over him like a bad head cold for the past several days. "What is it, Hope?", asked the individual sitting to his right - a kind of pasty guy in his late teens, with his own tuft of hair so blond and bright it might as well have been called silver too. Both were perched before a piece of machinery that would have looked like one of the old bikes from Cocoon if not for the lack of a place to sit and for the wires and other miscellaneous objects jutting out from it in all directions. Hope had been trying to install a device on the top of the massive, deformed machine when his phone had started buzzing.
"It's that...girl again. She's calling me," Hope stated as if he were thinking about something else entirely, still staring at the phone's screen as if it held every secret to the universe yet discovering these secrets meant he had to....cut off his own finger or something else just as unpleasant. "What girl?", came the response from the pasty male, a fellow that went by Grey for reasons Hope had never actually understood, because it wasn't his real name. "The girl from the lab who-" Before he could even finish, he was interrupted by a short, almost-breathless roar of laughter. "The one that talks your ear off every time you step inside the door! Ahaha! Where'd she get your number? I thought you-" Hope raised a hand to interrupt Grey, finally prying his eyes from the screen. "I accidentally left my phone lying on a desk in the lab last week. She found it and apparently spent a great deal of time looking through everything in it before deciding to tell me she had it." After another roar of laughter that left Hope sighing and rubbing his neck, Grey stood and sat the datapad he was working with off to the side, stretching to the sounds a body makes only when it's been in the same position for far, far too long. "Well answer the phone, Hope! She's not bad-looking, just...hyper. We should grab some food before we finish up with this thing, anyway." Before Hope could protest, his friend interrupted him, already making his exit. "Catch you in an hour!"
Well, there went a potential excuse. Sorry for earlier, I couldn't answer the phone. We were working on a research project. Staring at the phone again, Hope began walking towards the exit, returning a couple of greetings as he did so. This would have been a great time for his dad to call to check on him (though he typically complained about those calls) or for....something..anything..distracting to happen so he wouldn't feel compelled to answer the phone. But still it rang, as it had been doing for the past two minutes, incessantly compelling him to answer though he really didn't want to. Hope decided that if the phone hadn't stopped ringing by the time he stepped out of the ringing, he would answer it then. With that promise to himself in mind, he took up an almost absurdly slow pace as he made his way towards the door, wondering how the heck he was supposed to get adjusted to talking with a girl on the phone that already talked his ear off in person. Hope had already run out of things to say to her ages ago...and they'd only talked seriously twice. Hope had two late projects to prove it.
Before he knew it, the front entrance sat before him, the doors parting to allow him exit and reveal the city of Academia before him. Out into the light stepped not the puny teenager of three years before, during the l'Cie crisis, who couldn't put on an ounce of weight. Instead, Hope found himself to be a not-so-puny teenager who still couldn't put on an ounce of weight but who was now pushing six feet tall. Gran Pulse had grown just as much in that time...and Academia was a testament to that. Though not everyone was aware of the fact, Hope's own dad - and Rygdea, the Cavalry veteran from Hope's time as a l'Cie - were credited with the formation of the Academy government that now ran this capital city. Not that his dad's position as an administrator of the city amounted to all that much for Hope. He still had to get his education...and boy had he heard those exact words from his father plenty of times. He didn't need that much reminding, considering how quickly Academia was expanding. In order to find your own car keys in this city, one had to know how to use all the new, human-engineered technology, absent of all the fal'Cie's hand-me-downs. Plus, it didn't hurt to know how to develop new technology too. Besides....all of it kind of interested Hope anyway.
One last time Hope looked at the name and number, searching for messages he could respond to before he answered. All in all, someone observing as they passed by on the sidewalk might have gotten the impression that Hope didn't want to answer the call. And boy would they have been right. Not that Hope found this particular female all that bad or anything, but...something was definitely off about her. It could have been that she imagined some sort of odd chemistry with him that didn't actually exist. Or it could have been that she looked at him kind of funny. Or it could have been that -
Hope stopped short at the edge of the sidewalk, shoulders drooping a bit. Or it could be that she reminds me of someone..., Hope thought, frowning a bit at the phone before he opted to ignore the call. Pushing the thought to the back of his mind, since she...and they...only existed in his memories and dreams these days, he started down the street as a part of the large Academia crowd of pedestrians, planning to actually get that bite to eat Grey had recommended...even if his stomach suddenly didn't quite feel right.
Words - 1100-some (forgot to count) Muse - Good! Outfit - Similar to what he wears in XIII-2, but without the tie and travel pack stuff, maybe? Notes - I don't even know.

Staring at the huge buildings around her, Vanille felt like a misfit, she stuck out easily like a sore thumb in this crowd of Cocoonians dressed all nice in their…Cocoon-like clothes, and here she was, dressed in her usual tribal wear. Perhaps it was time for a change in attire if she was going to live among these peo- NO! This was Vanille! She was Pulsian through and through, there was no being ashamed of that. She loved herself the way she was, tribal wear and all. That thought made her smile wide, making her look probably more odd than she already looked, but that didn't bother her in the slightest. This was her home first anyway, if anyone was to be judging, it was her. Pulse was never meant for this type of advancement. She liked the way things used to be, rough and rugged…life had been a struggle here back in her days – oh how things made you sound old when you were alive over 500 years ago – and she enjoyed the fight for survival. It was as they say today 'survival of the fittest' and even though she was tiny, cute, and all that other adorable stuff wrapped into one package…she still seemed to survive the elements, the animals, and of course the fal'Cie in her time.
Three years meant everything. It could be good, or bad, or both, depending on how you looked at it all. Her friends could be just about anywhere on Pulse now, and looking at this grand city, Vanille figured that most of Pulse was pretty advanced by now. Fang must be somewhere near right? If Vanille ended up here, her friend should be around here someplace, but she knew very well that Fang could take care of herself – so long as she didn't go causing trouble over all of this change – so for now, the only focus Vanille had was to find out what part of Pulse she was on, and see if anyone knew anything about her old friends. She was most anxious to see Sazh and…Hope. She'd looked up to Sazh as the father figure of their little group, she really did hope he was getting along well with Dajh and the relocation thing. Then there was Hope, Vanille had pretty much attached herself to him since they escaped the Purge train and headed into the vestige together. She'd been so optimistic when he seemed rather gloomy, and tried her best to cheer him up. Sooner or later, he became the optimistic one, and it made her smile…a lot.
Closing her eyes, and losing herself in memories of happier days, Vanille smiled to herself as she remembered a particular conversation she and the silver haired boy had while they were on Pulse.
"Don't you remember you promised me? You promised me we'd come and see Gran Pulse together."
"Uh..really? I...When did I do that?"
"Oh, I don't know. How about another lifetime?"
She missed that day, it was sunny, the conversation was nice. She wished Pulse was like that again, to enjoy more nature and the sun…to be able to recognize this place as her home…it was so different, yet there was a familiar feel to the air, at least not every bit of Pulse was gone in her eyes.
"Do something for me, will you? Keep smiling. I-…it makes me happy when you smile."
"I--I didn't know you felt that way. Wait a minute. You mean you were joking?."
"Now we're even!"
Giggling, almost bursting into a laughter, Vanille remembered she was freaked out by what Hope had said, not in a bad way, just not knowing what to say or feel at the time. She'd pressed her hands to her cheeks with a shocked look on her face with a blush working its way to her face…until she realized he was kidding and ran off laughing like an idiot. She missed that too. Shaking her head slightly, drawing her attention back to the present, Vanille glanced up, noticing she'd still been walking in between different people and just weaving her way slowly through the crowd. The smile was still on her face as she began to scan the area. It just didn't seem to get any different, the city life, it was very active and it seemed like people were on the go at all times. Was there never time for a break? Apparently not. She'd then passed a pretty large building, it looked fancy and tall. Nille had to stop and admire it for a few seconds, tilting her head back to look at it completely as she gave off a slight "Oooooh" sound in amazement. It looked like…a school or something, maybe later there'd be a chance to do some exploring around here. Onward to find information.
Humming once more to herself, a happy little tune, Vanille continued down the street with her arms swaying at her sides, and her eyes scanning the crowd, looking for someone to help her out, hell, maybe even some PSICOM soldier or worker could help her find the people she was looking for, or at least tell her something about their whereabouts. Her gazed then stopped on someone in near the sidewalk, who seemed unsure whether or not to…do something, he was gazing at what Vanille had heard was a Cellphone, or something like that. Oh Cocoon and their technical wonders that still confused her. But it wasn't the look on his face, it wasn't his uncertainty, it was his look in general. It reminded her of Hope…too much like Hope. Silver hair, same eyes, just…taller and more grown up. Emerald green eyes then widened much to her excitement at the realization that hit her in the face. Her smile widened as her eyes never left the silver haired boy – more a man now than the tiny teen he had been, even though he was what…17? – and she was about ready to just let her emotions fly through the roof. Picking up her pace and running light on her feet, she weaved through the crowd once more as he started walking, perfect. Once close enough she shouted as loud as her voice would go. "HOPE!" And that's when the young hyper active Pulsian launched herself at Hope. Okay so that wasn't the best greeting to give someone who probably thought you were never coming back, but hey! She was excited! Who could deny her the happiness she felt right now? No one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 1216 Muse: Great! Tagged: Hope <3 Wearing: Tribal Outfit Listening To: Stuff? If realizing whom his not-so-secret admirer reminded him of hadn't been bad enough, Hope wondered if hearing things would help him reach his sadness quota for the day. Having at first believed he heard a specific, overly-enthused voice call out his name from within the crowd, Hope stopped himself before he turned to scan the faces nearby for the source, certain he hadn't actually heard anything of the sort. No, Hope's mind was just playing tricks on him, letting him hear what he wanted to hear. Feeling a headache starting to come on, Hope checked the time on a nearby screen and made a beeline for one of the escalators that would take him to one of the restaurant-filled squares of Academia. Just get some lunch, ignore the distractions, and get back here and back to-
The very last thing Hope had been expecting, more than likely, was for something to collide with him from his blind side and grab a hold of him like a tackling dummy. Hope let out a grunt of surprise and felt himself falling sideways with the momentum of the impact. A couple of people gasped, and good reflexes allowed Hope to.....well, to mostly catch himself on a sign just off the edge of the sidewalk. Mostly meaning he could have probably held himself up if not for whoever was attached to him...though he did manage to fall onto his back easily enough that he didn't land on an elbow or shoulder. Once sprawled out, Hope found he could only lay there, blinking up at the sky and trying to gather his bearings. How often did people just tackle you in the middle of a sidewalk like that? Hope would have thought someone was attacking him if he hadn't realized about four or five seconds had passed without the other person hitting him. So he shook his head fervently to snap out of it, finally turned his eyes downward to see just who had done this.
He froze, eyes widening, as he lost half of a breath as he successfully choked on oxygen.
Orange pigtails.
The appearance of the person still attached to him as he lay there, even though he could not yet see her face, brought Hope's thought processes to a standstill. He could not vocalize what little snippets of sensible thought remained in his mind. Only a pair of jumbled, incomplete words managed to pass his lips. How? ...Just...how?
Rational thought only plagued his mind intermittently. Who could be rational when they were seeing - no...no, when they'd been tackled by - a ghost? He could have been dreaming. He knew he wasn't. He could have been hallucinating....but again, not true. Then.....how? He would have to ask himself again and again. But did it really matter anyway? The facts were the facts, and as Hope slowly began to recover from his shock at seeing this...person....this friend and comforter. Why would he need any questions answered when she was already here?
Blinking again in some sense of amazement, Hope hugged Vanille - yes, he told himself again, the Vanille - around the head and hated that he couldn't really think of anything to say. What did one say to a memory, anyway?

Would Hope even remember her? Vanille frowned slightly, standing there in the crowd just a few moment after she'd shouted his name, causing a bit of reaction...but nothing to her standards. Three years wasn't long at all...but it was long enough to forget about someone. Shaking her head, she didn't want to think that anyone forgot Fang and herself...they'd been through so much together to forget. But that didn't mean it wasn't possible. A strong look of determination spread across the young Pulsian's face just then. The hell with it, she was going to make him remember whether he liked it or not! Taking quick steps across the pavement, Vanille ran as fast as her legs would take her to close the gap between herself and Hope. People moved to the side to let the charging girl through without bulldozing them in the process. Once close enough...that'd when she just acted before thinking. Leaping on her toes and springing herself into his side, Vanille had successfully taken someone down in the middle of the street. A congratulations might be in order.
Hitting the ground, Vanille continued to cling to Hope even as people just stared at her little display there. Smiling to herself and closing her eyes for a brief second, Vanille sighed happily before she flicked her eyes open wide like usual. Moving around she then felt Hope hug her back. That made all the difference in the world in her mind. 'He does remember...' that almost made her want to squee and just hug him some more but...this wasn't the time nor place for that. After all, she had just tackled him to the ground, wasn't she supposed to say something now? Like...maybe a hello? Moving around she smiled and sat up some pulling herself away and just sitting on the sidewalk on her knees with her hands now in her lap, her grin widened as she looked at Hope, happy to see he remembered her, even though he hadn't said anything yet. 'I hope I didn't hurt him...perhaps an introduction would've been better? Oh well! Too late now, at least he knows I'm here.'
Clasping her hands together and finally making the effort to speak, Vanille took in a breath. "How's that for a 'hello', Hope?" she spoke with such an upbeat and very happy tone as she then moved around again, getting up to her feet and dusting herself off briefly before extending a hand towards the friend she had just bulldozed, offering to help him up. "Sorry about that, being away for three years gives you time to build up your excitement I guess." That wasn't a great excuse...but it worked right? Vanille didn't need to justify her actions, it was just how she operated, letting her happy feelings take over and just roll with them however they came and went. Tackling, hugging, talking...none of it for her needed to be explained, for anyone who knew her they'd it it was 'just Vanille'. It was as simple as that.
Some weird part of Vanille wanted to burst into happy tears, or just start skipping...she was just overjoyed. It was like a sign. Here she'd come out of crystal stasis - her and Fang both - and she'd gone out looking for people, whether it be Sazh, Hope, or even Snow...she'd wanted to find someone...and here, not long after she'd started exploring this very technical city of Academia, she'd spotted the person she'd been most anxious to see. It was a dream come true. She never really thought about it until now...but she'd always liked being around Hope, even during the Purge. She enjoyed being comforting, and okay, so maybe she didn't have the best ideas (like following Snow into the vestige) but in the end, everything worked out! ...didn't it? They were no longer L'cie, bound to an inevitable focus...they were free to do as they pleased...finally, there was a future to look forward to.
Finally the former L'cie, Vanille included, could finally live. [/blockquote] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 777 Muse: Amazing! Tagged: Hope! Wearing: Tribal Outfit Listening To: Nothing Notes: ^_^ This is a great thread already!

If only Hope's thoughts could have fallen in line with his emotions, he may have been able to say something sensible to a friend whom he had never been guaranteed to see again. Hope himself had begun to accept the fact that Vanille was lost to him, along with Light and Fang. So this couldn't have been really happening, right? He'd hit his head somehow on the sidewalk when this strange person had hit him, and now he was believing her - whoever she was - to be Vanille. Regardless of who this stranger was, Hope continued to hug her, not knowing anything else to do, and not wanting to let go, with the small hope that this really could be Vanille, come back to the land of the living yet again.
As she unlatched herself from him and sat up before him, Hope couldn't even fathom what his expression must have looked like, staring into the smiling face of..well, of a ghost. He knew he was making a valiant effort to smile back, but the feeling of shock had his mouth must have had his mouth - and possibly other aspects of his features - hanging limp a bit. He was caught between wanting to scream to the world that Vanille was back and a strange need to keep it secret, like she'd be taken away again if he let it slip that she had been away for so long. She looked...exactly the same. And her voice sounded exactly the same. And she smelled exactly the same. And-
Hope would not have even realized he was still lying on his back had Vanille not offered him a hand after she finally spoke. Hope accepted it and slowly made his way to his feet, though he could not take his eyes off of the Pulsian before him as he did so. She might...what? Disappear if he looked away? Maybe. He couldn't be sure of anything at this point, aside from the fact that people passing by were looking at him and the "strange" girl who had just tackled him to the ground like they were both absolutely out of their minds. Hope was slowly beginning to realize that he wasn't crazy at all. Here stood Vanille before him - looking....so much smaller than he remembered - and the only crazy part was that he couldn't think of anything to say in response to her words, simple as they were.
"I..." Three years. How could a hello cover three years? Of course...Vanille had been in crystalstasis the entire time. That meant the time had passed differently for her, hadn't it? Hope didn't exactly think she'd been counting the years, months, and says since the fall of Cocoon, wondering if it would take another five hundred years before the l'Cie would once again awaken from their eternal sleep. "I-I missed...you." As soon as the words passed his lips, Hope Estheim had decided he'd made one of the bigger understatements of his life. Sometimes...understatements were good, though. Hope counted this among those times.
"But...." Should he ask? He kind of had to, didn't he, just so he could know? Acting as if Vanille's awakening had been determined to happen and moving on with...normalcy would have been preferred, but Hope needed to know what had happened. He shook his head, trying to display his disbelief. "But...how?"

Now, had Vanille thought this through just a few moments longer, perhaps she wouldn't have caused such a scene, but then again, her colliding into Hope surely made him realize that she was actually here, and not some sort of ghost or figment of his imagination, and it gave Vanille a good excuse to hug him right off the bat, just a glomp and there would be no questions asked. That was just how Vanille operated. She acted on her emotions rather than logic – most of the time – and that seemed to suit her fairly well no matter what the situation was. This was one of those moments where it didn't matter if people stared at her funny, or gasped at her behavior, all that mattered was that she'd found someone she'd been looking for, no one else mattered to her. Vanille smiled wide as she justified her reason for the tackle glomp only moments ago, extending a hand and helping Hope up to his feet. He was definitely taller, last time, if Vanille remembered correctly, he was about her height, if not a little shorter than she, even with the heals on her shoes, but now, yes, definitely taller and less…baby faced. Three years really could change someone, Vanille hadn't changed a bit within her crystal stasis, but those who continued to live onwards, they had to have changed.
Placing her hands on her hips as she shifted her weight more to one foot than the other, Vanille kept on smiling through the burning stares of other people simply passing by. Whether or not they caught a glimpse of her charging tackle was beyond her, most of them were probably just staring at her wild attire. Whatever. Staring up at Hope, Vanille then listened to his words, though they were slightly spaced out through hesitation, she couldn't blame him for being a little shocked. Last time she'd come out of crystal stasis it'd been 500 years since she and Fang had been crystallized with their focus only half complete, who would've thought that three years later they'd be back among the living? If Vanille had to guess, she'd say that it'd be another 500 years before she'd come back, just going by the trend…but luckily, there was no sign or room for disappointment, she was just glad to be around when all of her friends, her newfound family was still alive and well – at least so she hoped. "I missed you too!" She had missed everyone, but she had a real soft spot for the boy who had lost his mother due to the purge, they'd bonded a bit over the course of their journey, more than say, Vanille and Lightning had, everyone had their select few they wished to bond with. Hope was one of her select few.
"How? Well, you've got me. You'd think that I would still be in crystal stasis for another…oh four hundred and ninety seven years, but, luckily I am not." Vanille shrugged slightly, curious as to why the time had been so short for her and Fang to spend frozen in time up in Cocoon. Perhaps…it was because something had happened? No matter, there were no strings attached this time around, no focus to worry about, maybe this was finally her chance to live without worrying about becoming a monster or living forever as a statue. It took about 503 years or so, but now Vanille could finally enjoy the sweeter things in life. No more fal'Cie, no more fighting, just…enjoying the rest of the life she had, and with her age being roughly 19, she had a long time to spend enjoying life. "I guess maybe someone out there figured it was time Fang and I deserve a little bit more than we were getting, being crystallized so much you know? OH! Speaking of Fang, you haven't seen her around have you? I haven't seen her yet, not that I'm worried- " she was beginning to babble, and rather quickly for that matter. Stopping in midsentence, she took a deep breath and cleared out her thoughts, focusing on RIGHT NOW, rather than worrying, or going into twenty questions. Rationality was not the toast of the moment, but Hope certainly tried to rationalize Vanille's return. What was the date? Well - it was close to the fall of Cocoon, but not on the exact day. It wasn't even the same month quite yet. So it couldn't have been that Vanille's crystalstasis was meant to last three years before she was freed again. Besides, Hope knew crystalstasis to technically be a permanent state, though he himself had only been in crystalstasis for a few minutes (so he was told) without any fal'Cie intervening. He couldn't figure out what the significance of three years was, anyway. And where were Fang and Light? Hadn't they both been in the crystal pillar too? The more Hope tried to figure everything out, the more confused he became, and the less interested he became in reasoning out Vanille's return. He was, though studying to become an Academy researcher, willing to take some things, like the return of one of the kindest friends he'd ever known, at face value.
Vanille seemed to know exactly how long it had been since she went into crystalstasis. Had he been wrong about the passage of time thing? He quirked his eyebrows but quickly lowered them, deciding it didn't matter anyway. Someone on the street could have just as easily told her. He stood there awkwardly after she'd finish speaking, not quite knowing what to say but happy enough anyway. And he doubted Vanille would mind if he just stood there like he didn't have any sense at all. He felt like he should be...doing something....more. He was being pulled in several different directions. He almost wanted to return Vanille's earlier tackle-greeting with one of his own, but that didn't seem like the wisest thing to do in the middle of the street, especially since the people who had witnessed the first tackle would start to wonder why these two crazy teenagers were abusing one another. But Hope couldn't just stand here staring at a girl he hadn't seen for three years with a stupefied expression on his face, could he? That seemed like selling short just how happy he was to see her here, among the living again.
But he hesitated long enough to give her a chance to speak again, bringing up Fang. Hope kept waiting for her to mention Lightning, too, but she never did. Maybe...she didn't know Lightning had been locked in crystalstasis too? "I...haven't seen Fang. You wouldn't believe how surprised I was to see- well, to have you tackle me like that," he said, rather apologetically, accompanied by a soft chuckle and a hand moving awkwardly to rub at his neck. He quickly brought the hand down. He'd broken himself of that nervous habit until today. A small worry broke into his mind. What if Vanille had been the only one to come back? Thrilled as Hope was to see her, he knew she couldn't be happy with Fang still locked in crystalstasis. And...he wanted Light back, too...but he supposed all of those questions would answer themselves, eventually. Right now, he needed to be thankful for the extended family member that fate had been kind enough to bring back to him.
Hope was debating on whether or not to tell Vanille about Light, she asked him how he was doing. Again, such a simple question...but he felt the need to answer it in about a thousand different ways. He wanted to further express his joy to her and tell her how great he was now that she was back. He wanted to explain the last three years. He wanted to tell how his day had been. He wanted to talk to her about anything that would keep her in his presence for a little while longer. Stumbling over a couple of sentences to express this confusion, Hope finally closed his eyes, took a breath, and opened them, smiling meekly. "I...think if we're going to talk, we should go sit down somewhere. There's a lot to talk about..." He stepped forward, pointing towards the escalator behind the Pulsian. "I was headed...to get something to eat for lunch. Would you come with me?", he asked, bubbling over inside. Good thing he didn't show it on the outside....or he would have been a complete and total mess.

Vanille stood there like the happy little glee-filled girl she was she she smiled wide and rocked back onto her heals. Looking UP at Hope - boy he had grown quite a bit over the past couple years hadn't he? - she just remained as bright and cheerful as she always had in the past. After all, who wouldn't be just downright delighted to be one of the living again? It only made her think about Fang...where was she? Was she even....'alive' so to speak? Oh boy, if she wasn't, Vanille would surely drop into a deep depression. Fang was not only Vanille's bestest friend in the entire universe, but she was also her big sister, maybe not by blood, but they'd been through far too much to let a blood barrier stand in the way. They were sister through and through, no changing that. Still, Vanille had to accept the fact that Fang just might not be around...sometimes life wasn't kind to everyone, it made Nille wonder why she had been spared.
And with that thought in mind, Hope had answered her question, putting Vanille in more fear for her friend's life, but...everything would be just fine! Scuffing her shoe against the pavement lightly, Vanille looked down and mumbled a tiny "Shoot. before listening to Hope through the rest of his comment. Smiling once again she looked up at him and brought back her cheerful attitude while placing both of her hands on her hips. "That's me! I'm just full of surprises. I am unpredictable!" she said confidently with a slight giggle. So her attitude was far better than it should be regarding what little was known about Fang, but still, there was no way she could be glum and depressed after tackling Hope to the ground for the first time in three years - or rather...the first time ever if you wanted to be technical. Back to the point. There was no room for a sour face at a time like this. This was a time to be joyful and happy! Vanille was alive! Hope was here! HOORAY!
When Hope spoke again, Vanille quickly looked around at the amount of people around. Yes, it was probably best if they went and sat down somewhere rather than in the middle of a street crowd. Looking at the escalator Hope had been pointing two, One, Vanille was mesmerized by the technology once more, and two, she remembered her lack of gil. She wouldn't get anything! The best solution out there. Smiling and turning back to Hope she nodded, confirming her thoughts before even speaking. "Sure! I didn't think we had a lot to discuss, but if you say so. You can fill me in on everything that happened since Fang and I went to sleep!" she had no idea about Lightning, where she was, what became of her....Vanille figured she was among the living after Cocoon was crystallized. But...she could've been wrong, not that the thought even came to mind. Turning around and facing the moving stairs - oh so amazing - Vanille smiled and took a few steps forward, arms swaying at her sides as always before she quickly turned to gaze at Hope. "I should let you lead the way..." and with that, she stepped aside to let Hope take the lead, after all he actually knew where he was going while she did not. ” I am unpredictable!"
Hope laughed under his breath a little. ”Maybe more than ever…” Hope had never expected the older girl sitting beside him while he waited to be purged to even care whether he lived or died, like most everybody else in Cocoon. She would be dumped off on a foreign planet and left to die, too, and Hope thought he’d probably never see her again, since he knew at that time he wouldn’t last a day on Pulse if it turned out to be hell like everyone claimed. As it turned out, that girl would be one of the main reasons he managed to survive Gran Pulse when he finally made it to the lower planet. In between, he’d found out that, not only was she from Pulse herself, but she had once been a l’Cie assigned to tear his planet out of the sky and had partially helped cause the Purge and…well, yeah, a bunch of things he never would have guessed. And now she was here, out of crystalstasis, for no rhyme or reason. Vanille’s whole niche seemed to be unpredictability…not that he’d have it any other way. He just hoped she wasn’t hiding another brand from him, but she seemed so genuinely happy that he was sure she was brand-free this time around. Thank Etro if it was true, and they – meaning Fang and Light too - were really, finally past all this stuff. This was the best surprise he thought he’d ever had, to be honest.
”Well…” Hope didn’t want to admit to Vanille that not everything was the same as when he, Snow, Serah, Sazh, and Dajh had been released from crystalstasis, but… ”…Everything has been pretty…complicated since all of you went into crystalstasis. I- I’ll tell you about everything when we get there, it might be too much to absorb here in the middle of the sidewalk,” he told her, making a save before he started spouting out all he wanted to tell her right here in the street and managing to match her smile. ”Okay,” he said, as confirmation that he would lead the way before he took a purposeful gaze at the nearby escalator. He almost wanted to take Vanille’s arm or her hand to help leader her past the massive crowds and to a good spot to stand on the escalator, but he hesitated and never did. Instead, he wedged his way around a small group of people stepping onto the escalator and waited for Vanille to do the same before he stepped on and started up. They would only have to step off the escalator and round a corner before they reached their destination, and so he tried to hold in what he wanted to say until they’d reached their destination.
--------------------------------------------------
A few minutes later found them starting to sit down with their food (which Hope had asked to pay for in full) as Hope placed his tray down on one of the few tables still open at this time of day to pull out a chair for Vanille. Hope came here quite a bit to eat and study, since it was close to the main Academy research building and most everyone he knew there liked the food here. Plus, Hope actually studied better with more going on around him for some reason. He supposed he liked being surrounded by people for some reason.
Gran Pulse’s midday sun poured in even between Academia’s always-increasing quota of skyscrapers and spilled over the table as they both took their seats. Eyes kept turning in his general direction – mostly people whom Hope had become acquainted with over time – to see him with a girl they probably thought to be extremely enigmatic just from the way she dressed. Normally, Hope would have been at least a little bothered by this, but he hadn’t exactly noticed them. He was still too distracted with the reappearance of the girl to pay attention to the goings-on around him. Part of his mind was still trying to figure this whole situation out, but he couldn’t develop a reasonable explanation. Vanille was just…back, and there was nothing either one of them could do to explain it away. A slight worry found its way into the back of Hope’s mind despite the butterfly-laden elation that gripped his body. Was this the work of fal’Cie again? He didn’t even want to entertain that possibility, but…
Peering across at Vanille, Hope inattentively fumbled with the wrapping on one of his sandwiches and mulled over what he could say to her. He didn’t….feel like he’d expressed how happy he really was to see her yet, but he didn’t exactly know what to say to her. Finding himself staring at her, he finally diverted his eyes to the sandwich. ”I don’t know…where to start,” Hope admitted, keeping his eyes lowered. ”I rehearsed everything I would tell you about once you came back a thousand times, and now I can’t think of anything.” Hope chuckled to make light of his stupidity. He had no reason to feel this overwhelmed by Vanille… ”I- don’t really know how to tell you how glad I am you’re back.”

Having found Hope here was quite remarkable, it was one of those ‘one in a million’ kind of moments. Out of the many places to search for someone, between Oerba, New Bodhum and this city, Academia, Vanille was sure it would’ve taken her a very long time to even find Fang. She was kind of disappointed to not have seen her best friend yet, she hoped – or rather she knew – that Fang was okay, she was always able to take care of herself, much more than Vanille ever could. As she gazed at Hope, her smile just as wide as ever, she folded her hands across her chest, listening as people walked by and didn’t seem to pay as much attention towards Hope and herself as they had a few moments ago when Vanille had launched herself at him. Probably not the smartest idea, but it sure as hell made her noticeable didn’t it? Probably too noticeable, but what’s done was done, no going back and certainly no regrets for dragging the poor guy into the pavement. It’d been three years after all, who could blame her for that kind of excitement?
When Hope spoke about things being complicated, Vanille’s face fell into a slight frown as she placed a hand to her chin and began to ponder. Things looked pretty good now so…maybe everything was all fixed up now? Hopefully, she’d caused enough trouble in the past, and she’d hate to see all their efforts go to waste. “Okay, you can tell me later!” She agreed before starting off, stopping, and letting Hope take the lead. After all, he knew this place far better than Nille ever would. She would’ve wandered around forever, probably walking in circles had she not stumbled across Hope. Oh well, she was positive this was all going to go smoothly. Trailing behind him towards an escalator, Vanille kept her eyes wandering, staring at the buildings, the people, the vehicles, it was all so…Cocoon-like. As much as she loved the way Pulse had been before, she never had a big problem with Cocoon, so this was nice, it was good to see that the people seemed to be back on their feet once more, it brought a bit of ease to the young Pulsian’s heart as she then looked back at Hope and stepped on the escalator, beaming a smile at him as they started to…wherever it was he wanted to go.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walking through the room, it was full of people and Vanille sure got some weird stares. Sure her attire was different, her accent way different, but staring was rude wasn’t it? Oh well, she didn’t pay them that much attention as she smiled having her chair pulled out for her. “Thank you.” Vanille then adjusted her sash and skirt and sat down before scooting up towards the table and looking at the tray of food. It all looked…weird. She was used to the vegetation that grew on Pulse, or the typical hunting in Oerba. As much as she loved them, roasted Chocobo was nice, even though it was sad she still loved those animals with all her heart, those and the sheep, those cuddly little guys weren’t tasty though that was for sure. As she gazed at the tray, she went ahead and stole one golden looking thing, it felt salty and smelled like…a potato. She nibbled on the food for a second before just taking another one, she wasn’t really here to inhale food or anything, but she was quite fascinated already. After two fries, she sat back in her seat and looked at Hope, just keeping herself quiet for the time being, waiting for him to speak and explain what was so complicated after she and Fang had tuckered down into a deep crystal sleep once more.
When he spoke, Vanille just went dead silent, not a peep came from her as she folded her hands together in her lap and crossed her ankles near the chair leg. She listened to him and understood what he was saying, though it gave her no new information about what happened after she had left. Smiling though, she nodded her head slightly. “It’s kind of strange, isn’t it?” She more or less stated than questioned as she shrugged her shoulders and let out a deep sigh. She wasn’t exactly sure why she was back, why she was among the living once more, but she wasn’t complaining. She did like the idea of living a full focus-less life now, but she had to wonder…what were the strings attached to her being alive now? “One minute you’re crystal the next you’re tackling people in the street, who would’ve thought this day would come so soon…” it was true, she herself was quite shocked. Last time it took 500 years for her and Fang to wake up, this time, only three short years…what was going on these days? Why were things like this happening? She didn’t know, and she didn’t expect Hope to have all the answers, she just wanted to know how those people she cared about where doing, what happened, and where they were now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 976 Muse: Great! "I'm glad it did come soon...", Hope responded to Vanille, though with him staring at nothing in particular it seemed as if he were talking to himself. He was thinking that maybe this was what it would take to keep everyone completely going their own ways with their lives. Three years hadn't changed everything, but Hope definitely didn't see as much of any of the rest as he would have liked. They had taken to living their own lives, and Hope could understand why, because he'd experienced the same kind of...drifting away. They were never whole without Vanille, Fang or Light, so they....just drifted back towards their own lives. Hope couldn't really understand what had caused it. Of course, most of his own drifting had been due to speeding through school and his dad's involvement in the reconstruction of the government more than anything. As it turned out, Snow, Sazh, Dajh, and Serah weren't much a part of that life...Hope was happy to know they were still out there in the world, but he wasn't really involved in their lives anymore. He barely even knew where to find most of them, especially Sazh...
But that was what he needed to explain to Vanille without knowing exactly how she felt about it. She probably expected them to all stick together better than this. Hope had expected the same thing, but life...wasn't really all that cooperative, as it turned out. He looked back across the table to her, letting out a reluctant breath before he finally mustered himself enough to speak. "I should...probably tell you what happened to everyone that was left after the fall of Cocoon," he started off, trying to pay attention to his food and not the curious eyes of the Pulsian in front of him. "I don't actually know where everyone is anymore. We were all together for a while, but Snow and NORA started New Bodhum and Serah went to teach there and Sazh and Dajh keep to themselves now..." Hope rubbed lightly at his temple. "Snow left to find Lightning sometime recently, too. Serah...didn't believe that Light was in the crystal pillar with you and Fang, and Snow decided he'd go looking. I don't think he's come back yet."
It was really strange to think about all of these things. Hope was so far away from them here in Academia...he almost felt too safe and isolated from the rest of the world, even though this was the most populous place on all of Gran Pulse. He'd never felt that way in Palumpolum...but back then, he'd never been a l'Cie and grown bonds like he had with the other l'Cie either. "I've really only seen my dad and Rygdea in the past year...you remember Rygdea, don't you? He was with Raines in the Cavalry..." Hope had mentioned a lot of times that Raines would have been happy to see everything that had happened by now. It was kind of strange...Hope had barely known Raines, and yet he wondered about the man quite a bit sometimes. Forgetting Raines' speech to them when he'd attacked them in the Ark wasn't going to happen anytime soon, at least not for Hope. He heard the same things through Rygdea sometimes.
Hope probably could have ranted for at least a little while longer about all that had happened, but he decided to stop it there and see how Vanille reacted. Staring into her face almost apologetically, he picked up one of his sandwiches as if it were almost a shield, holding it up in front of him. A shield from what, exactly? Hope had no answer to that whatsoever.
If Vanille could be any happier today, then it would really be a sight to see. She was happy to be sitting here with Hope, happy to be alive and away from the problems of being a L’Cie, just…she was happy about pretty much everything to be quite honest. That was no big surprise though, she was a genuinely happy girl for the most part. Of course, with all this happiness came curiosity. She wanted to know EVERYTHING Hope had been up to since the fall of Cocoon. She wondered if people were still in touch with one another, she wondered if Hope and his dad had worked things out, there were just so many questions she could ask if given the chance. Of course she wasn’t going to bury him in questions, she figured she’d let him talk first, then see what questions came to mind, and in moderation, then she could ask them to ease her curious mind.
Emerald eyes were glued to Hope, her hands folded in her lap, and Vanille was quiet. She let him speak, taking in his words and processing them. Her rather excited face had fallen a bit when Hope said he didn’t know where everyone was, but that was to be expected really, everyone had their own lives to live. They’d bonded over time, but now it was time to move on, even for Vanille. But she of course didn’t want to let go of everyone, she had considered them a weird dysfunctional family, but she loved them anyways. The next statement though, it really confused Vanille. Snow went looking for Lightning, talk about the crystal pillar…no no no! That wasn’t right. She’d speak up once Hope was done talking, and hopefully get things corrected on the fact that Lightning hadn’t gone into the crystal pillar with herself and Fang. Although they were in a crystal sleep, Vanille was very aware of what was going on with her friends, she could sometimes even speak to them…or at least that’s what it seemed like, though physically not possible. She knew that things weren’t as Hope had said regarding the crystal pillar, Snow was off looking for Lightning…so maybe now Vanille could shed some light on the situation.
The mention of Rygdea didn’t ring any bells for Vanille. She’d heard of the cavalry, but never actually gotten to meet that particular one. She’d met Raines, right before he tried to ‘free them from their fate’ and defy his own focus. Shaking her head though, a small almost sad smile appeared on her face. “I’ve never met him, or really anyone from the Cavalry, except for Raines.” She said with a small shrug of her shoulders before her eyes moved from Hope to the table top. Her hands went to one of her pigtails, messing with the curls as her tone was a little less chipper than before, her enthusiasm had died as well. “I must tell you, Hope, of what I know. In regards to Lightning, she was never in the crystal pillar with Fang and I.” she stared, still staring at the table and trying to find the words to describe it all. Being able to watch over her friends and be slightly aware of what was going on, she didn’t really know about Light being dragged to Valhalla by force, but she knew that there was no way the former soldier could’ve been in that pillar. Shaking her head to confirm it, not only to herself, but to Hope, she then gazed upwards. “She’s alive somewhere, that’s the only part I do not know. Hopefully Snow finds her.”
With a quiet sigh, Vanille felt a smile cross her face once more, wanting to think about the happy things in life rather than the sad things. “Everything will work out though, It’s good to know people are…doing alright at least. I’m impressed to see a town like this being built in only three years. Kind of overwhelming if you ask me.” Jumping to another topic, but staying in the same general area of subjects, Vanille just tried to lighten the mood, adding her chipper tone back to everything she said and just remaining in that cheery attitude of hers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 814 Muse: Great! "You need to meet him!" Hope had forgotten that the closest Rygdea and Vanille had come to meeting one another was when Rygdea had dropped Hope, Light, Snow, and Fang off on the Sanctum flagship to break Vanille and Sazh out of custody. If not for Rygdea's piloting, the whole idea wouldn't have worked at all... "He helped save you but...we were transported to the Ark and never made it back to the Lindblum..." There had been a time when Hope believed Rygdea to be dead along with Raines, but the day his dad told him he was working with Rygdea to build a new government, he'd found out he was wrong. The two were about as different as any two people could get...Hope supposed that was why they were able to work well together. They could merge up conflicting ideas...
But that was something to talk and think about later. Hope could tell Vanille was about to tell him something important with the way she looked away and fidgeted. He grew a little worried about what she was ultimately going to say, and once she spoke, his eyes grew wide. Lightning...not in the pillar? Then...where was she? It was good news, wasn't it? Or...maybe not... If she had been in the pillar, then she probably would have returned with Vanille. Where...else could she be, and how would they find her now? "Serah was right...", he mumbled, quietly, his mind in an entirely different place. "I mean...something told me she was, but Lightning just-" Just what? Why did half of him feel like there was no doubt that Light had been in the pillar since the fall of Cocoon and the other half knew that she wasn't? He'd found her knife on the day of the fall... A determined look crossed over his face. "We've got to find her." Maybe that was obvious, but Hope felt like he needed to say it out loud. He felt...guilty knowing he'd spent all this time accepting that Light was gone, when in reality she was...lost. Or...something. Boy did he hope Snow could find her...
His appetite having disappeared momentarily, Hope put down his sandwich and only sipped at his drink until Vanille spoke again, being as optimistic as ever. Well...this was what he wanted, wasn't it? To find out that everyone could be back together again. That Vanille had appeared out of the blue was a reason to think that the others could come back just as easily, wasn't it? Only half an hour before, this would have been the last thing Hope would have expected as he set out to have his lunch for the day. Straightening himself in his chair, Hope nodded about Academia and glanced at the city around him. Watching all the construction going on made the observation of a city popping up on the plains of Gran Pulse a little less shocking, but it was still impressive to him. Academia would always be growing, too. Where it was much bigger than most of the villages that had been built and the ones that were leftover from the old times, it still was still a lot smaller than Palumpolum.
"Well, you see...my dad had a part in organizing the government. The Academy and Academia was his idea, along with Rygdea. He'd rather people didn't know, so it usually stays between the closest of us," he told her, with a little bit of pride at what his dad had been able to accomplish. Sure turned out to be a greater man than the unfeeling idiot Hope had once proclaimed him to be...but that was the past. The distant past. So he could forget about it completely. What did Vanille think about a huge, Cocoon-like city just...covering her planet, though? Hope gathered himself to ask her. "What do you think about it? This is your home, after all..."
Thinking back on all of the people Vanille had met along the way through her journey as a L’Cie, well…hers and everyone else’s, she hadn’t met anyone else from the Cavalry, just Cid Raines who had tried to eliminate them, to set them free from their focus. It would’ve been nice to meet everyone that had played a role in their succeeding to protect Cocoon, like…well, Rygdea, and Hope’s dad, and well, just anyone else she seemed to miss out on. Nodding at Hope with a bright smile, Vanille clasped her hands together again. “I sure do, I hope he’s alright…I need to thank him for all the effort he had put forth to help us L’Cie.” She gave a small laugh at her own words. They were former L’cie, for Vanille it was hard to believe, because now…she was finally free of her brand. It was mind boggling at times, but she liked this new start she was getting, especially having found Hope right off the bat, now if she could find Fang, then she’d really be happy.
The topic of Lightning though, that wasn’t something to be all smiles and sunshine about. Lightning was missing apparently, and it seemed that everyone except Serah had assumed that Light was stuck in the crystal pillar with Fang and Vanille. Shaking her head slightly, orange curls bouncing, she knew things looked rough now that the truth had been let out, but what if Snow couldn’t find Lightning? Something needed to come up sooner or later, Vanille just wasn’t sure what that something was just yet, she kept her mind open though, just in case some memories or thoughts came to mind on the topic. “Someone will find her, it may not be today or tomorrow, but someday, Lightning will return. Of that I’m absolutely sure.” She added cheerfully, though not having that squeaky sound in her voice, just trying to sound optimistic to lighten the mood, anything she could do to raise back that happy go lucky mood of hers, well she’d do anything for that. After all, today was a happy day, obvious reasons being Vanille being alive and having found one of the best friends she could’ve ever asked for.
Switching gears and topics from Lightning and the somewhat saddening tone, to a more light hearted one, Vanille gazed across the room and out a window that showed people walking back and forth across the streets of Academia. Sure, it was way out of her league, but it was nice to see people settling down and taking it easy on Gran Pulse, a so called ‘hell’ that these people had once called it. Ha! She’d like to hear their descriptions of this wonderful world now. Turning her attention back to Hope, Nille listened carefully, moving her clasped hands to her lap as she simply looked at his face while he spoke. It really was amazing to see what people could accomplish in a short amount of time, she was more than impressed, even if seeing her home world start to become a tiny reflection of what Cocoon used to be did disappoint her a little. Still, she wasn’t about to allow that tiny disappointments interfere with her great respect for the people who had made this city what it was already.
Vanille moved a hand, resting it under her chin as she tapped one finger against her bottom lip, going into thinking mode and looking like she was pondering Hope’s question in great thought. And she was, she wanted to give him an honest answer without sounding cruel or stupid towards her opinion of Pulse and Cocoon colliding…metaphorically of course. “Hmm, I’m not sure. I mean, I’m glad people are settling okay, but…I’d like to think that the rest of Pulse is the same as I remember it, you know? As you said, it is my home after all…I’d be terribly disappointed if cities started popping up EVERYWHERE…especially somewhere like Oerba…” her voice trailed off as a bit of disappointment could be hinted in her tone. Whatever, even if Oerba had been demolished and turned into something greater, then she’d have to accept that. What was she going to do about it? Absolutely nothing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 823 Muse: Great!
