Kain looked up as he was about three miles away from the base of the mountain. Maybe there was something else here, something that he had missed the first time, but that was not likely. He had left Baron after his last meeting with Rosa, he would not present himself to Cecil just yet, but he thought that he was on the right path in setting things right again. He just needed to move on, and not just from Rosa but more in his own past as well. Things that he had done, he needed self forgiveness before he could ask the forgiveness of others. That was something that he was just not ready to do yet, there were other things that needed tending to first.
He watched over head as the dragon flew around in the sky above him, not to far up, but just above the trees. Kain watched him with a small faint smile atop his face as he continued to walk on ward. The dragon was still young, very young, but it had grown to be the size of a small house. It was a dark shade of purple, and Kain was actually fond of it. And to be honest Kain was not fond of a lot of things. When he had found the egg in that cave he had never expected it to hatch much less become attached to it. There was something about it that made Kain actually happy again. That was when Kain got that feeling, a feeling that he was being followed. He looked back up to the dragon still flying about; he arched a brow and turned behind him, but no one in sight. Kain shook his head and then turned back around and continued walking. His pace had quickened though, as he smirked to himself. He jumped into the nearest tree and doubled back behind.
Kain was by far a stupid guy; he trailed along the tree line jumping from limb to limb as he then came to a stop. He lowered himself back on the ground at the shrubbery below him. He arched a brow kneeling down, whoever it was they were good for Kain to not have noticed until now. He bent over looking at the ground with his elbow across his knee as he then looked around him again. With a shake of his head he pulled himself back up in the tree again and continued to back track. He continued on about a quarter of a mile, he dropped back to the ground again. But whoever they were, they were leaving their own tracks, but just barely. Kain stood up again and turned back around to go back the way he had came. He darted from the path and then back up into the trees, until he was back to where he had to started. Just a little confusion to add to the said tracker, that and he was just making sure. Kain stood up straight as he landed on the ground, light on his feet, and looked up to still see the dragon there.
Kain rolled back his shoulders as he then spoke, “Ok, please. Don’t waste my time here. Why don’t you come out from where it is that you are hiding and face me.” He said with a stern and emotionless voice. He did not know why they would put up all the trouble to track him when they could have just fronted him when landed on shore from Baron. But that was not the issue anymore, however the issue was now, that he had no idea who this person was, and it was merely getting on his nerves now. Kain gripped at his lance with his right hand as he scanned the area around him very alert now.

Edge was going to kill two innocent men.
He was going to kill them for Rydia. To keep her from turning into a monster like a l'Cie who did not complete her focus was destined to do. He was going to kill two men - two friends - and he was going to do it for love. And Rydia could never know.
What damned bastard of a god-creature could take an innocent human being and inform her that if she didn't kill her friends, she would be cursed to roam the world, wailing in agony for all eternity? Edge had had asked himself that question many times. Why cause this torture in their lives? Why did the fal'Cie hate all of them? Why- Edge could fill his kingdom with all the whys that had filled his mind since Rydia's branding. They would do neither him nor her no good.
The only good he could do her would be to kill them. Kill Cecil and Kain. Free Rydia.
Yet it could not be that simple. Killing...killing anyone was never simple, much less two people Edge considered to be friends. But he had to do it. Edge could not watch Rydia slip away into eternal damnation. He was not capable of doing it.
Having made plans to cover for himself while he was absent from Eblan with only the closest ninja in the royal house, Edge had slipped out of his bedroom in the early evening (having gone to bed early with claims the day had tired him out) and kept an eye on Rydia's actions for the night, waiting only once she was in her room and asleep to begin his preparations for leaving. He dressed himself in the barracks - one of the Eblan Four waiting for him there - and set out only a short time after midnight. A quick airship ride - on a small, civilian cargo ship returning to Baron - had brought him to the adjacent kingdom before morning's light. All that was left had been to find Kain, who was clearly the easier of the two to reach.
And, as Edge unfortunately reminded himself, likely the easier of the two for him to kill.
For Rydia.
He had taken very little time to locate the dragoon. Kain was headed to Mount Ordeals. Unsurprising, really. Not to mention, it afforded Edge an immense advantage that he would not have had in Baron. Not only would Kain be extremely easy to track, but Mount Ordeals provided for an extreme case of solitude - likely why Kain was headed there to begin with. Edge could perform his...his duty...without any sort of fanfare. Quick, quiet, and of no one's concern but Edge's own. Exactly how a ninja would choose to take down a target.
Only a short time passed before Edge had drawn close enough to Kain to track him by sight and by, occasionally, hearing. The ninja took every precaution necessary to avoid detection, acting as nothing more than a mere gust of wind to the advancing dragoon. Even the damned dragon circling above had been none the wiser. Edge drew closer...closer...closer...to Kain, until the two were a mere sprinter's distance from one another. Close enough for Edge to have upwards of ten different ways to kill the dragooon. Yet, he held off.
And, of course, in Edge's holding off, Kain grew wise to the act. Edge expected as much - Kain was no fool and seemed to have almost superhuman instincts at times. He also knew how to lose a tail - Edge, from a concealed position, watched as the dragoon launched himself into the trees and backtracked. Edge waited, folding arms over his chest. He would be back before long. No need to risk exposing himself only to ensure that Kain would not give him the slip - if Kain was set on heading to Mount Ordeals, he would be going there, those following him be damned. Sure enough, Kain dropped out of the nearby tree again several minutes after first disappearing, causing Edge to smirk slightly.
And, of course, he made it clear that the gig was up. Edge narrowed his eyes slightly. Part of him had wanted to deal with Kain and not exchange a single word with the other man. Now that he was here....Edge almost felt the need to explain himself. Rydia's brand flashed in his mind yet again. She would not turn into a monster...no matter what he had to do. "Good ear," Edge's disembodied voice said aloud, as he remained concealed. The ninja did not bother hiding his voice. Kain would know the speaker anyway. "Tell me, Kain - what do you know, if anything, of fal'Cie and l'Cie?" As he spoke the words, he sifted his way through cover, placing himself at a better angle to watch Kain and praying second thoughts did not start to plague him. Against Kain, second thoughts would cost him.
For Rydia.

There were times when Kain had not only doubted his own mind, but had also pushed himself away from everyone that he knew, everyone that he had held close in the past. After Cecil and Rosa’s wedding he had fled the field. He did not want to be known as the guy who had betrayed his closest friends so many times. Though he also thought that people already knew that and it was a fact. Kain had just been susceptible to the mind control, and he knew that his weak mind was to blame. He knew that it was his fault no matter what way he looked at it, the angle had always shown the same spot, and there was no looking at it differently. Kain accepted that now, and he would do all in his power to fix what was defected in his own mind. He shook his head as he gripped still at his spear still at the where he had come from. Kain had been in many of predicaments before, but none involved a tracker. Kain also knew of only one tracker well one that was worth his time these days anyway. But he did not want to think that it was this person, so his mind moved on.
Kain moved his eyes, but only his eyes to look to his left and then to his right. This was rather odd and he was getting itchy. That was until he heard that voice, he arched his brow turning in the direction it had come from only to see shrub. “Edge?” He asked with clear confusion about his voice. Why would Edge be tracking him, what had Kain done this time to royally piss someone off? Of course happy time with tea had never crossed his mind with Edge, but there was no reason for him to be tracking. The King of Eblan was starting to flatter the dragoon by his mere presence. He knew that something was up; he just did not know what it was yet. So he played along for now. He arched his brow again under the helmet as Edge starting asking something that he had no idea about, but Kain racked his mind for any indication that he knew of the fal'Cie and l'Cie. Unfortunately nothing was coming to his mind, Kain simply shook his head, “I know nothing of what you speak.” He said as his eyes scanned the area in front of him again.
Kain moved his feet then stepping forward in one large stride. He gripped at his spear, again he had the feeling that something was about to happen, and it was not going to be pretty. Edge was just not this type or at least that was how Kain seen it anyway. He arched a brow looking about the forest in front of him, “What is it that you want Edge?” He asked without even really thinking about it. This was not just some invitation, but Kain had not invited Edge on this trip. Kain slightly looked up to where the dragon was circling, but then looked back to the trees and shrub in front of him. Why wasn’t he off helping Rydia or even Cecil? What was so important that Edge tracked him all the way out here, what was the point? Kain shook his head as this thought as he stepped forward again. He just knew that something was about to happen, he just was not sure what yet. He stepped forward one last time as he awaited his answer, the thought did however cross his mind that he was not going to get one at all.

Well, let it never be said that Kain was slow. A few words to judge by and he was already spouting out Edge's name in confusion. Edge watched his reaction carefully. By all appearances, the dragoon hadn't a clue as to Edge's location nor to his intent. Edge should have been happy that his...target...was so in the dark. He wasn't. He thumbed uneasily at the hilt of one of his katanas, listening to hear if Kain knew anything about the l'Cie. He didn't. No one did. What would it matter if anyone knew or not? As the fal'Cie seemed to have made damn clear, nothing could change what Rydia had been assigned to do. And now everyone had to suffer for it. But no one would come out of this a monster...unless it was Edge himself. He was well on his way to becoming one.
"No one knows," Edge found himself forced to say to distract himself from his thoughts. He had never been one for soliloquy, but it seemed like the only way he could express himself now without tipping off the dragoon. "Lives ruined, and not a soul knows why. That's the problem." Though he very much wanted to say more - pour out all the rage he felt at the fal'Cie and profess that he could not see Rydia become a mindless beast - Edge had to be smart about this and not let his emotions get the best of him. His anger could be an ally, but also the biggest detriment against a fighter as experienced as Kain. Thus, the ninja simply scowled down at the ground and continued to wait until Kain decided to make a move. In the meanwhile, he advanced his position again, putting himself no more than fifteen yards to Kain's back.
Ever patient, Kain spoke and shifted again, asking Edge for his purpose. That was the cue to act. Blocking out any sort of damning thoughts, Edge silently unsheathed the katana he had been gripping. Into the opposite hand, he plucked two daggers from off of his belt. Priming himself for his attack, he let Kain stew for a handful of seconds before he finally made a response. "Salvation," he said, only barely loud enough for Kain to hear, before he launched himself forward, flinging one dagger at Kain's torso. His next words came out almost a growl. "For Rydia!" The katana was bared defensively before him in anticipation for weapons clashing. The other hand skillfully moved to shove the second dagger into Kain's shoulder - insurance if the thrown dagger missed. No second guessing now. It was only Kain and Edge...and if the ninja could keep his mind in order, it would only be Edge before this was all over.

The dragon, Skeiron, flew above them. In reality the dragon knew there was another below him. He just did not know how to react just yet. Kain awaited his answers, his first one quite rhetorical but that did not matter, all he wanted to know was why Edge was here, and judging by the answers he had received Edge was running him around in circles. Or trying to anyway. Kain gripped at his lance still as heard the sound of Edge’s daggers being drawn, if he could catch him off guard. Great, now to put a damper on things Edge was just going to attack him, without an explanation. Between this time Kain had prepared himself, he brought the lance up deflecting the dagger that was thrown at him. It stuck itself in a tree as Kain tried to adjust when Edge darted from the treeline, but was distracted when Skeiron landed. The dagger worked its way past his shoulder pad and past his under armor, Kain flinched as he pulled it out tossing it to the ground. “And this! This is your salvation?” he asked with a shake of his head, as he pulled back for a moment getting a clear look at Edge, eye to eye now.
The dragon behind Kain then started to advance and at a quick pace too. His wings to his side and large strides to Edge. Kain held out at arm, not turning his back on Edge, “No! This is not your time.” He gripped his lance but the dagger had nicked his left shoulder, his dominant hand. Skeiron halted on command with a glare at Edge. He would waste no time, Kain however did not want to harm Edge, just knock this idea out of his head, whatever it was. For Rydia? What did this have to do with her, now that he was thinking about it. Kain took in a breath, and for a second he thought, why not kill him? Just get it over and done with. At one time he would have not second guessed himself, but this time was different somehow. The dragon twitched his wings a bit as he then started to pace behind Kain. And then something overtook Kain. He had felt this feeling before, and he knew it well, within the pits of his soul he now wanted Edge dead.
He pulled his lance forward again, as he started to run forward now, lance digging in the ground. It was like it was coming and going, on and off like a light switch or putting out a candle. Nevermind the stinging in his dominate shoulder he stopped and jumped forward pushing his lance to the ground using it as a pole and launched himself over Edge trying to get the upper hand from behind. Kain pulled his lance back around and with any success at all he aimed to trip Edge. There would be no foul now, Edge had started this and now he was going to finish it, even it killed him in the process.

As he felt the dagger that he still gripped in his hand puncture flesh, Edge conceded his small victory for the benefit of hopping back out of range of Kain's lance should a counterattack come, but not a one did. Probably because of that damned dragon making its presence known. Edge cast his eyes in its direction only long enough to ensure that it wasn't close enough to cause any problem for him. He would be dead in seconds having to deal with a dragon in addition to Kain, but the large creature had no room to maneuver on the ground. Edge could tell it was still young - didn't even realize its wings were its greatest weapon. It wouldn't be a problem...quite yet.
His opening strike had done the trick, it would seem, as Kain ripped the dagger free from underneath the lip of his armor and tossed it aside. Any advantage against a fighter as unique as Kain was good enough for the ninja. The dragoon spoke to him, and Edge could take no pleasure in responding. This wasn't a case of fighting some villain who deserved Edge's wrath and deserved death. The only way Edge could keep his mind in the game was to continue filling himself with emotion with the mental image of Rydia hopelessly turning into a forever damned monster. "It was never my salvation!", he barked out. How could he explain to Kain what was happening here? He deserved to know, but Edge couldn't bring himself to say the words. Not yet. But Kain would have to know before he fell...this was no fault of Kain's. This was a false god's tampering in the lives of humanity.
Edge fell into a fighting stance, his katana held up horizontally above his shoulder, and watched the dragon starting to lumber towards him. Though he knew how to put down a dragon, he couldn't see his chances for success going up with an oversized lizard entering the fray. At least he could hope that it would get in Kain's way somehow... To Kain's credit, however, he called the beast off. With the creature behind Kain, Edge had a chance to peer at it to make sure it didn't disobey before he returned his gaze to Kain. His move.
Bending his knees into an even lower stance as Kain started to rush him, Edge was unsurprised to see the dragoon plant his lance and begin to vault over top of him. Edge didn't follow Kain's movement upward, knowing he'd lose sight of him almost immediately. Instead, his body rolled off to the side as insurance that Kain wouldn't come down on top of him. Edge popped back up immediately, his body righted to face Kain just after the other man landed. Having lost track of the lance's location during the jump, Edge spotted it skimming down towards his feet a second too late, and felt it connect with the side of his chin. He didn't try to correct the fall and completely lose his balance, instead moving through with it, landing on the back of his shoulder. Momentum allowed him to plant a hand into the ground and flip himself back over, onto a knee, still facing Kain. Options flashed through his mind, but Edge knew he needed, more than anything, to close the distance to keep Kain from freely using his lance.
The king of Eblan flashed forward and started unleashing slashes towards Kain's torso with the katana, doing what he could to utilize his advantage in the quickness department and constantly trying to imagine the man in front of him was anyone other than Kain. Just some bandit. Some bandit.

Never his salvation....
Kain was merely amused by this answer, but moved, no. He shook his head at Edge as he then advanced in on him. He jumped him letting the lance trip him up and the other end cracking his chin. This however would be his first and his last hits. Kain doubled back around to face the King of Elban, bringing his lance up to block most of the ninjas swings with his katana. And that would be his slip up, letting Edge get close enough to start getting in swings at close range. Kain heard the katana meeting with the lance in quick strokes. He was starting to have a hard time keeping up. Edge’s blade slid down the lance’s length as Kain moved his arms in an upward fashion to try and push him back. Kain however did not see what had exactly happened, all he knew was that he had not moved quickly enough to avoid it.
Kain felt the blade move past his armour and undershirt, and finally rested about six inches through his bare flesh.Yet Kain made no signal that he had just been stabbed in his bread basket until his lance dropped to the ground and bounced out of his reach. He stumbled backward as Skeiron tried to advance again. “No!” He said with still yet firm voice, though he felt that the booming echo had hurt his chest, the dragon stopped none the less. Now getting light headed his back hit the ground with a thud, knocking the wind out of his lungs. Six inches of a thick steel blade, would make a man bleed out if it was not tended to in a timely manner. Kain pressed a hand to his wound even through the armor, his eyes starting to water. Though he was not sure if they were tears of pain or finally tears of a sweet release that he had been awaiting. And here they were, Edge clearly coming here to do the job, under what weight was on his shoulders, Kain had no clue at all. The coldness was starting to take its effect, a shiver going up his spine. He had never felt anything like it in his miserable life, he had managed to pull off his helmet so he could breath a bit better, if that was possible. He felt as if his lungs were about to collapse, letting in short gasps, his chest heaving.
It was then that Skeiron shot a line of fire in between the Ninja and the Dragoon. If he was not allowed to attack the man before him, the least he could was separate them to avoid more damage to the Baron Knight, for now anyways. Skeiron then moved to the side with the hurt Dragoon, and curled itself around him, just daring anyone to come near. He started to blink his eyes rapidly, darkness taking him under.
Kain adjusted his eyes to the lights that were around him. He shielded his eyes from what he now knew to be the sun. Upon hearing his name being called he turned around only to see a small child running at him. His brow arched as the child clung to his legs. But something inside him told him to pick the small boy up into his arms, and he did so. The boy was beaming with laughter, Kain could not help but smile at this. Something was odd about this dream, or his own version of an afterlife. It was then that he noticed a woman standing mere yards behind the boy. But the sun was brighter than he had ever seen it before, and he could not get a clear look at her. Kain looked back to the child he was holding, only then did he hear a word come from his mouth that he had not expected, Daddy.
The sweat rolling off of Kain’s forehead was moved when he shot up from his lying position. The fire then caught his attention, and then the wound that he had acquired caught his attention even more. Both hands immediately going to his right side. It seemed to be dark outside now, as Kain looked down to his torso, it seemed to have been bandaged, but it still hurt none the less. Kain could barely even move, he let out a sigh as he laid back again.

Kain simply had too much weapon to move in too little space, which was exactly what Edge had been counting on. The king continued to advance, taking aggressive single steps forward after every katana strike and attempting to control Kain's center line so to keep the other man using his lance in a strictly defensive manner. Kain wouldn't simply wear out like the typical so-called "warrior" and Edge knew he couldn't rely strictly on pace of battle to win this fight. He'd need to take a few opportune chances.
So he took one. Changing up his pace slightly, Edge held back and delivered two quick blows to nearly the same area, which Kain managed to narrowly block. Then Edge drove himself forward, pressing the katana into the lance. As Kain moved to shove back, Edge knew he had his best opportunity. Bracing himself as best he could, Edge crouched down slightly and held his ground with the katana just long enough to slip a third dagger off of his belt, angle it in his fingers, and thrust it underneath the lip of Kain's chestplate. It hit skin and drove still further, and Edge couldn't decide if it was relief or complete and total regret he felt wash over him. The king fell back, dagger still in his hand, as Kain wavered slightly. Edge backtracked to put a few feet between himself and Kain, his eyes darting to the dragon, assuming he'd have to fight the creature now that he'd dealt the blow to Kain. But no, the dragoon still held the dragon off. Edge's eyes slowly moved from regarding the dragon with suspicion to Kain.
And Edge could hardly watch him struggle, his eyes turning down to the bloodied dagger in his hand that he threw aside. He never wanted to see the weapon again.
Kain needed to know why. He didn't even know if Kain could hear what he was saying, but Edge yelled out his explanation nonetheless. "Kain! It was you or Rydia! She was willing to turn into a monster for all eternity to let you live on your life, even after what happened in Mist! How could I let someone that good and that forgiving die!? I had to choose her. I had-" Edge had been creeping closer to Kain as he spoke, but the dragon's breath put an end to his advancing. Edge brought up an arm to shield himself against the heat, glaring at the dragon yet again. But he was done here, anyway. As the dragon moved over to Kain, Edge stared at Kain's limp body on the ground before he tore his eyes from the sight and walked away, Baron and Cecil's palace his destination. He did his absolute best to shut his emotions down. It wasn't going to happen.
-------------------------------------------------- A Few Hours Later
Edge solemnly stared into the flames before him, his face emotionless. And here he'd thought he'd seen enough flames today.
His trekking had taken him nearly a third of the way back to Baron before Edge had realized he could not go through with this. There was no way he could kill two men for absolutely no reason other than some damned god-machine had told Rydia to do so. Turning back had been the hardest thing he'd done - Rydia's face had been in the forefront of his mind the entire time - but he knew there was still a chance Kain was alive. The dagger had caused enough damage to kill the dragoon, but the stab had been too low to damage any organs aside from a lung, and that would not kill instantly. Edge had found Kain by himself, his dragon apparently having been under the impression that if he brought Kain back some food to eat, the dragoon would be just fine. Two deer carcasses had been dropped nearly on top of Kain. Damned dragon.
Edge had patched up many a wound in his lifetime and had no trouble stopping Kain's bleeding and administering a potion before he wrapped up the wound entirely. By that time, night had been falling, and Edge had managed to get Kain under the treeline and start a fire to keep any creatures from wandering too close to them. Fortunately, the dragon hadn't come back, but Edge was making use of the slain deer, cooking one over the fire. His mind had almost shut down by this point from fatigue and the conflict going on within it. He lost track of thirty minutes while he stared at the meat and at the fire before he saw Kain rousing to consciousness in his peripheral vision. Edge didn't feel up to turning and looking at the dragoon, so he only poked again at the meat with a stick he'd cleaned. Edge didn't think Kain had seen him as the latter reclined again.
"You shouldn't move at all," Edge said, quietly, still staring at the makeshift barbeque, the light from it barely revealing his face.
