The time had finally come. Weeks and weeks of training had led to this moment. How did they say it? Time to put up or shut up? Something like that.
Hope Estheim took in a deep breath. Yep, he was ready for this. He looked out over the park that had been allowed to naturally grow in inside of Oerba, giving people a safe place to enjoy the foliage of Gran Pulse without having to wander out into the wilderness - and the perfect place for Hope to find out just how much he'd learned these past few weeks. Okay, so he needed to remember everything he'd been taught and pull it all together in order to be successful in his mission today. He turned his eyes down from the park to the little earpiece in his hand, another toy he'd asked his dad to bring home from work. Actually, he'd asked for two of the easy-to-hide comm devices, one he could use and one for his co-pilot on this mission. After turning it over absent-mindedly in his palm for a few seconds, Hope figured he'd stalled long enough. Brushing aside some silver hair, he equipped his earpiece and made sure enough of that same hair came down to cover it (not that it was that easy to see anyway).
"Irvine, can you hear me?" Yep, Irvine happened to be the former l'Cie's co-pilot. The same Irvine that anyone who knew him knew either as the professional on women or a very ego-centric guy who made a fool of himself in the presence of the female kind and usually ended up with a thin red handprint on his face. Hope, however, trusted that Irvine was at least more knowledgeable about women than anyone else he knew. He had spent most of this month hanging around Irvine, watching him work and trying to figure out how he could best translate Irvine's way with women into his own style. Feeling as if he had finally nailed down the whole idea of flirting and asking out a member of the opposite sex, Hope had been the one to propose coming to the park today to put those skills to the test. The comm devices were Irvine's idea - the older guy would provide Hope with advice and encouragement over the line if he started to falter. Hopefully no one would notice his co-pilot hiding in the bushes.....at least Hope couldn't see him anywhere.
"Okay, I'm going in......" Thankfully, most of the pretty girls Hope's age from Cocoon seemed to have all moved down into the expanded village of Oerba. Today, the park seemed to be filled to the brim with them. Seeing all of them made Hope's head spin a little bit. "Wish me luck." The silver-haired teenager at least felt he'd always been able to pick out the good ones from the bad. That part of the equation he'd felt confident in without Irvine having to teach him anything. Hope nervously played with his fingers as he took the first few steps into the park towards the just-setting sun on the far end, eventually building enough momentum and confidence to let them fall down to his sides.
After he'd walked a ways and hadn't seen anyone he could approach in the right way, Hope stopped underneath a tree and leaned against it, glancing around for a few moments. The temptation to ask Irvine if he'd spotted anyone pulled at his mind, but Hope wanted to rely on his friend as little as possible. He scratched at his head, figuring that if he made himself look like he wasn't really busy with anything, some bored girl might walk up to him on her own accord. A minute or two passed, nothing really happening. Letting out a low sigh, Hope went to push himself off the tree.....and cringed. He placed his hand back in front of him,s staring at it, now covered in a nice, thick, sticky film of tree sap. "...Great." Hope turned and stared up at the tree, as if to say Thank you, you troll of a wild Pulse tree, before he turned back to staring forlornly at his hand. Now what?
Great start to the mission.

Alright, so Deuce could think of worse places to be stuck. She wouldn’t have thought so before, but this place wasn’t so bad after all! Some people had given her odd looks when she’d asked for directions to the Peristylium Suzaku, and some had gotten emotional and told her to leave them alone and that she wasn’t being funny with her questions, but other than that, she couldn’t really complain. When she’d first laid eyes upon this little village, she’d assumed the worst; some ruin in the middle of nowhere with not a person in sight. All that walking for nothing. Thankfully, there were actually people here… even if they were dreadfully unhelpful and sometimes even a little mean. Judging from the various responses she’d received, she assumed this had to be a refugee camp of sorts. People whose homes had been taken and who had been forced to find another place to stay. That would also explain the contrast between the fairly modern look the people seemed to have and the ancient look the village itself had. It also explained why some people responded so hostile to her questions and why some villagers seemed to wander around looking surprised at everything they saw. If this had been their home for a long time, they would no longer be surprised at how the buildings and such looked, yes?
Deuce smiled and nodded to herself as she wandered around the village. Yep, that explanation made the most sense. That had to be it. Her smile quickly faltered at the realization that this was a very, very bad thing for her. If these people didn’t know where the hell they were, how the heck was she ever supposed to get home? Maybe she shouldn’t have split ways with that Laguna fellow, he’d seemed nice enough, and strong too. She wondered if he was around here somewhere. She sighed and shrugged. At least she was safe for now… that was something, right? Reaching in her pocket, she checked her phone again. No new messages, bummer. “Why have a phone if you’re not going to use it?” she muttered irritably as she let her feet lead her aimlessly through the streets. Really, she had no room to judge... she'd missed plenty of phonecalls herself, and people had to leave her messages all the time as well. She guessed it was a Class Zero thing.
Not paying attention where she was walking, she accidentally ran into some small kid. “Pardon me. Are you okay?” She said with a smile, the kid merely nodded his head and told her it was no big deal before continuing along his way. It was kind of strange, how easily she fit in here… people hardly seemed to notice she was a foreigner at all. “Right, right. They are all refugees, thus foreigners themselves. Almost forgot.” she thought to herself as she made her way through the crowds of teenagers at this spot. She hadn’t seen many of them in the actual village, maybe they just got fed up with their parents being so down in the dumps all day long. She couldn’t blame them for finding a spot of their own to hang out. Walking here, she almost felt like she was back home. All these young people, happily chatting about everything and nothing, significant and insignificant… it reminded her of the school’s courtyard. The only thing missing was the uniform, and the occasional red cape. In this weather though, you’d have to be crazy to wear more clothes than necessary, even Deuce had removed her cape and put it in her bag, which definitely didn't happen often. Deuce was fond of her scarf-cape. But... it was hot, and that scarf threatend to choke her to death here. It didn’t seem like anyone here recognized it as a status symbol anyway, so it really was just another piece of clothing adding to the scorching heat. Well, scorching heat might be exaggerating a little, but it was definitely warmer than Deuce was used to.
She sighed happily in relief when she found a tree that offered her a shade to cool down in. Good, good, she could sit here for a while and think on her next move. What did she know so far? This wasn’t Rubrum. She’d heard talk of l’Cie and spotted a large crystal ball nearby though, so she was probably still in Oriens. Of course she was still in Oriens, where else could she be? She knew there were refugees, so she might be in a country the Milites attacked in the past… or maybe they hadn’t attacked this country yet, and it was just the people who were from another country and… heh? Deuce scratched the back of her head. This was confusing… and the weather wasn’t helping making her think any clearer either. Alright, focus! She needed to clear her mind and start fresh, she was obviously in the wrong mood-set to go thinking of complex things like this. And so another problem presented itself; the only way the brunette knew how to relax was by playing her flute, which was not normally a problem as people back home were used to hearing her songs wherever they went… but would the people here be annoyed by it? It would be disturbing their peace, after all. Not that their chatting was very peaceful and quiet or anything, but still… it might make her stand out, and she didn’t want to draw too much attention to herself. But… no, she needed to clear her mind. If people got annoyed, she’d just go somewhere else and play there. This was important, it needed to happen, for her peace of mind. Some people had punching bags as stress relief, Deuce had her music.
She peered around quietly to gauge the overall mood people had. They didn’t seem particularly annoyed. Well… there goes nothing. Placing the flute near her lips, she started to play a calm song, keeping her eyes open to see if anyone was annoyed. Of the few people that noticed or cared, most seemed to actually smile and nod, assuring her that it was alright for her to continue before returning to their conversations. A huge weight fell off her shoulders, and she felt her body relax against the tree she was sitting against. Slowly, she allowed her eyes to fall shut. That way, she wouldn’t be distracted by people moving around near her, and it allowed her to really focus on what she was doing. That was the reason this was such a great stress reliever, it required so much concentration to play a music instrument properly that it drew all your thoughts away from whatever you were worried about before. At least… it had that effect on Deuce. She’d only been playing for maybe a few seconds, and already she was starting to feel calm. What would she ever do without her trusty flute?

Irvine had to admit, this was one of the stranger things he had done in life, and this was coming from a man who had been to the Shumi village. Tailing his ‘apprentice’ around a park full of girls with a pair of binoculars and an earpiece was definitely strange, and while Irvine rarely thought that much of others thought of him (with the exception of girls and whether they wanted him), he did have to wonder what people might think of his hiding and spying if they saw him. He feared accusations and assassination of his character. But he had been helping Hope out for a while now, and there was no way in hell he was going to miss his first real attempts with the ladies. And what would he do without Irvine's help? Irvine had trained him, but flying solo was a different matter altogether. He couldn't just abandon him.
At least Hope had been able to get them these nifty earpieces, he could hear everything clear as if he was standing right next to Hope when he was speaking. Not that Hope was talking right now, but they had tested them earlier. Apparently they could also play radio, music files and some other things that Irvine hadn't entirely understood. He could be a bit of a technophobe when things started going over his head, which on this planet they seemed to do quite a lot. If it didn't fire bullets and it involved electricity then it was probably too complex for him to be bothered much with it. "Loud and clear!" he replied when Hope asked him if he could hear, affirming that their method of contact was still good.
Hopefully the real sign that he wasn't creeping was that he had company in the form of Riley who had been on Pulse with him for some time; they were both stuck here, marooned away from their own world. Irvine was not an expect on creeping... well, actually in a way he was, but he was not an expert on actual stalking; either way he felt having somebody with him might make it seem more normal. He didn't think stalking was generally considered a group activity. Irvine took a look around at the local girls. Most of them were a bit young for his taste, but a few were at least his age and over and these ones interested him greatly. But he was here for Hope, not himself, so with effort he made himself not so much as spare the older ones a second glance. Instead he scanned to see if anybody was looking at Hope, maybe even checking him out. "Hey, you don't need luck. You've been trained in the art of seduction," he assured him, although in a slightly jokey tone.
Irvine actually facepalmed at Hope's next smooth move. Okay, maybe he did need luck as well. Irvine could impart knowledge until he was blue in the face, but he could not change Hope's downright bad luck. And this kid had brought down the government? They must have been even more unlucky than he was. Irvine would never understand how that had happened, even after having it explained. The facts of the story made sense when presented, but at the end he couldn't quite picture it. "Okay... tree sap, that's okay," Irvine said, trying to advise as best he could for an unexpected problem, "Don't wipe your hand on your clothes, it'll look weird. Wipe it on the grass, but pretend you dropped something. Maybe even someone will come help you and you can get talking." With a smirk, Irvine recalled that it was actually because Hope had dropped money that they had even met in the first place. Maybe then he was more the type who seemed to have bad luck, but for whom in reality those unlucky incidents turned out to be advantageous later. Irvine had had a few of those moments himself actually.
A sound of somebody playing the flute reached him quite clearly from nearby, another distraction from listening to Hope. The girl was pretty, too young for Irvine's taste, but probably just right for his younger companion. Irvine had to think about how he could best advise his friend about her, in case she did catch Hope's eye. She seemed to be wearing a uniform, similar to the SeeD uniform, but clearly not of that organization. Of course it wasn't, he was in a different world. It did give him a pang of homesickness though; not so much for his home, because he didn't exactly have one, but for his friends. He didn't let it bother him too much though, he maintained a strong belief that he would be able to get home eventually. No, soon. Riley had had the pleasure of being loose from the SeeD ship for quite a while now and that was something that she was happy about. Not that she did not like the job, but it was more of the aspect of freedom than anything. She along with Irvine had been pulled through a portal of some sorts to a way different place than that of their own. Not that she minded been abandoned in a strange with Irvine of all people, but she did in a way miss home. This place was something that had taken her a long time to get used to, but it was growing on her. It was something new and full of unique things to see. She and Irvine had been staying with a girl by the name of Alyssa, she had offered up her home for them to stay at and she was thankful for that, it was mostly because of Irvine that they had got a place to stay, maybe it was his charm. She smiled at herself as she walked around the park looking about. On this particular day there would be the songs of love birds playing in their nests, but she wondered if this plan was actually going to work.
Riley had been at their many of teaching sessions, and this boy Hope, well he had a nack for not being all that bright around girls. But who was she to judge, ever since she had met Irvine she had this knot in her stomach as if it were trying to take her over. She shook her head at that thought and continued to walk, she spotted Hope in the midst of the other kids, she then finally clicked on her own earpiece, only to hear, then already chatting it up. She gave a large smile as she listened in, ”Tree sap? Really. This kid has issues.” She said to herself as Irvine intervened in the boys crisis, already this was turning out to be quite interesting. Riley continued on as she then heard the sound of a flute streaming in her ears, she looked around for the source She smiled at the girl who was making the music, she was good. Riley looked around for the source of Irvine, but spotted no one. But she figured that he did see her because Hope was not too far away. She sat on a small bench nearby, rather close to the girl playing the flute. The people around her were listening to her play and it filled her own ears with a sort of peace, one that she was really not that used to.
Riley sat crossing her legs, left one over the right, she then lightly spoke into her ear piece as then spotted Irvine. “Your two o clock Irvine.” She said as she then leaned back into the bench, then nodding to the girl playing the flute. Riley had a kncack for picking these things out and it was not that hard to tell that the girl was nice, and she did look out of place. But that was what Riley was here for, was for scouting, she was not sure why she had agreed to this play, but she agreed to help. And maybe it was just because Irvine had asked her too. But maybe it was because this kid looked to Irvine like a big brother in a way, and it was something that Irvine had took pride in knowing that he could do such a thing like this. But either way she liked this Hope and she would be willing to help him out even if the circumstances were odd. Her clothes were not of the sort that the people here wore, just like herself and Irvine. She arched a brow at her clothing now, now really noticing it more, it was a uniform. She thought on this as she listened to music, was she lost too? Riley had probably figured this by the nervous looks that the girl was giving out, or maybe it was just because she had stage fright.

Though Hope just looked like a kid interested in his hand on the outside, on the inside he was calling himself every word in the book that equated to ‘idiot’. Of course, the tree sap wasn’t really as much his fault, in terms of him having made a mistake, as it was just a really horrible accident. He could have probably put his hand on that tree a hundred different times and this ‘handful of tree sap’ disaster would have only happened once. Naturally, the one time would be right now when Hope really didn’t need anything to go wrong. Already he’d been rattled out of his comfort zone, and he hadn’t even started talking to any girls yet. No….no……he couldn’t panic, he reminded himself as he had many times in the Gapra Whitewood and Palumpolum and on Pulse. Hearing Irvine’s instructions over his earpiece helped cool the former l’Cie off, as well, and he finally crouched down like he was searching for a set of keys or something and ran his hand through the grass, which…..mostly did the job after a few seconds. Unfortunately, though, no one came up and helped Hope look for his imaginary keys. Oh well, no harm, no foul.
Hope had almost forgotten that the kind of strange but really good-looking girl that followed Irvine around (proving that the marksman knew his stuff about women) was here to help, too, and Hope noticed her out of the corner of his eye as sitting not that far away. Did…she have an earpiece too? Well, it didn’t really matter anyway, Hope supposed. He threw her a nod of acknowledgement…but his attention was quickly directed elsewhere. To music he could hear nearby. Hope wasn’t even sure if what he was hearing was someone actually playing an instrument…some kind of woodwind, it sounded like…or if it was some kind of recording, but it sounded like the music was coming from the other side of the tree. Hope had all but forgotten about his hand as he stood and listened for a second. Glancing around the park, he could see a few people’s eyes fixated on the tree from the other side, including Riley’s, the aforementioned follower of Irvine. Hope didn’t know if this music wouldn’t just be a distraction from his real task, but he had to see what was going on. After all, he was a fourteen-year-old.
And Hope, having stepped around the perimeter of the tree, felt very, very glad that he had investigated. The flute, which he realized the instrument was on first sight, was attached to a pair of lips, which were in turn attached to a really...pretty face. For a few moments, Hope stood staring at the girl (who happened to have her eyes closed while she played), completely enamored. He couldn’t tell if it was the music that held him in a trance or…well, you know, something physically attractive. Again, he was a fourteen-year-old. The girl herself didn’t seem to be all that much older than that, either, but she played the flute as well as if she had been doing so for thirty years. Her uniform looked…like a school uniform? It wasn’t any uniform he’d ever seen schoolchildren in Palumpolum wear. The skirt was a lot….shorter….
Well, uh, anyway. As she continued playing, Hope stood back a few feet, watching and listening. This was his chance. Taking in a quick breath and glancing over his shoulder in Riley’s direction (since he had no idea where to glance for Irvine), he decided exactly what he should do, and he would do this thing he should do, and nothing would go wrong. Actually….that sounded better before he actually thought about it. He scratched at his head, finding himself stalling momentarily. But then, a force that seemingly resided outside of Hope’s body forced him to move one leg, then the other, and then back to the first leg again, as he approached the young flautist. Before Hope even realized it, he had taken a seat up against the tree himself, right beside the young girl, close enough that if he said anything he thought he might scare her half to death. However, Hope was content to stay quiet for the moment, just sitting there with a knee tucked up close to his chest, listening to the song and studying the girl’s face.
He also wanted to disregard his desire to yell “Look at me now, Irvine!” into his earpiece, feeling so confident that his actions thus far had been rather smooth. Yeah, he’d hold off on any yelling.

As soon as her lips touched the instrument and the music came out, Deuce felt her entire body relax as she allowed the melody to drift her away from where she was now to a happy, safe place in her thoughts. No fears, no worries, just enjoying the sound that she was producing with this simple little object. Soon, the voices around her were drowned out and she was completely alone with her music. This was the state she needed to be in if she was going to make it back home in one piece, calm, relaxed, positive! As the song carried on, she felt her mood growing lighter and lighter. She stopped worrying about being lost and separated from her classmates and instead focused on the positives; the people here were relatively nice, and the temperature was nice… people didn’t mind her playing the flute, which was also a definite plus. Yeah… things would be alright. Soon, she’d be home to tell her friends about all this, she could already imagine their disbelieving faces. ‘Sucked into a portal to a foreign land? Deuce, get your head out of the clouds.’ by the more serious members of Class Zero, and simple laughter from the less serious crowd who would think she was just making up a story and pulling their leg. She couldn’t blame them either… a portal to a mystical land… she probably wouldn’t believe that story either, truth be told.
The end of the song was drawing near, but Deuce stayed in her lighthearted mood for now. Maybe she wouldn’t even need to play a second song this time. As she played the last note, she dropped her hands – and thus the flute, down onto her lap. Seconds later, her eyes fluttered open but the sudden bright light hurt her eyes a little, and she blinked rapidly a few times as she rubbed the back of her hand over her eyes. Very smart Deuce, nice going she laughed mentally at herself, you’d think after the first oh, hundreds of times, she’d have learned by now. Maybe sometimes, she just got sucked into her music a little bit too far. Oh well… at least she was feeling better now. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted something, and upon landing her eyes on the young man sitting next to her, her eyes merely widened a little in surprise. Someone just randomly popping out of nowhere would probably make an average person jump in shock, but Deuce had had practice with this. She had Ace as a classmate, after all, probably the one guy in the whole wide world who knew how to teleport. In that regard, all of Class Zero had an unfair advantage in these situations; Ace had already numbed them to this kind of shock with his random appearances. In fact, at first, she’d almost believed it was Ace who had appeared beside her. They had similar hair, and since this guy was sitting, they sort of looked like they had a similar height as well. In a quick glance, they looked quite alike… but upon closer inspection, she realized that it wasn’t him, and she felt a little disappointed. If Ace had been here, he could’ve potentially helped her get back home. At the very least, she wouldn’t have been alone in a foreign land. Still, the disappointment wasn’t bad enough to ruin her mood, and so she curled her lips into a pleasant smile at the boy sitting next to her. “Hello,” she said simply, not sure what else to really say… what could you say without it sounding really awkward in this situation? Her eyes lowered to her flute and her smile faded a little as she looked back up, “I didn’t ruin your conversation or anything like that, did I? I thought it would be alright to play here…” she hadn’t really specifically asked if she was being bothersome to anyone, and she’d only relied on the looks a few people were giving her, she hoped her music hadn’t distracted this guy from anything important. He didn’t seem too angry though, so she supposed it wasn’t that big a deal.

Nobody came over to help Hope out and start a conversation, but that was fine, Irvine had not really expected anyone to do so anyway. Staving off tree-sap-related embarrassment was enough of a win for now. Riley had been drafted in for extra surveillance and had a earpiece of her own. She job was mostly to scout for incoming girls and/or troubles (aka angry fathers/brothers/boyfriends) so Irvine could focus on Hope's currant situation. To a lesser degree she might serve as a safety catch to point out if Irvine was recommending and course of action that was socially suicidal, but Irvine didn't think there would be any need for that. He knew what he was doing! She sat herself down on a bench that was conveniently on the edge of the bushes Irvine was currently hiding behind. Had she spotted him? She must have because she told Irvine a potential girl was at his 2 o'clock; the same flute girl that Hope seemed to have spotted himself. "Thanks Riley," he smiled, keeping his gaze on Hope as he started wandering over. Irvine had not been able to work out how to have two different channels, so Hope would just have to hear everything he said to Riley, so he had to try not flirt with her and put Hope off. This was difficult for him.
Irvine was poised on his knees, binoculars up to his eyes. Not looking like a weirdo in a bush at all. "Hope!" he said as Hope sat down like right next to the girl, "Okay, don't freak her out, you probably shouldn't have sat right next to her like that..." The girl was sitting with her eyes closed, Irvine was praying that when she looked around she wouldn't just get a massive shock and, like, poke Hope in the eye with her flute. Fortunately when her song ended and she opened her eyes, nothing more than mild surprise registered on her face. Phew. Obviously she must be kind of cool, or she was used to guys creeping up on her, but that seemed unlikely. The microphone on Hope's transmitter was sensitive enough to pick up the girl's words as well as his own. Irvine didn't want to talk too much, he needed to try and let Hope deal with this himself. He wanted to run in and try fix everything, but Hope would never learn that way. Besides, he hadn't even screwed up yet. Much. If Hope remembered their lessons he would be thinking in his first compliment sometime soon, something nice and not too over-the-top. Her music would be a good choice, especially when she had just offered him a window to talk about it.
Temptation getting the better of him after about three seconds (what could he say? He was weak), Irvine snuck around the back of the bushes and then pushed himself through so that he was behind where Riley was sitting. The view from here was better after all, although that was just an excuse. His hat forced back on his head and a twig in his hair, he put his hands on her upper arms and leant forward so his chin was just over her shoulder and he could whisper in her ear (the one without the earpiece obviously). He muted his own earpiece so that he could still hear what was coming from Hope's end but as that his own voice wouldn't be echoing through both his own and Riley's microphones. "What do you think? I'm suggesting he takes easy. She doesn't seem like the type who would like him to be too forward. Which probably suits him better as well." Irvine moved his arms so he was more in a hugging position around her shoulders, but less sweetly he also had an amazing view of her cleavage from over her shoulder like this. That could be... very... distracting... Focus! There wasn't a whole lot he could do right now. He just had to wait on Hope's next move. Riley looked to the girl and then to Hope. She gave a smirk as she listened to what Irvine and Hope were saying. This was going to be some interesting turn out. That was, if Hope, did not fail miserable, but she had faith in him, and she thought that Irvine did too other wise he would not have helped. She panned the area again, it was like they were on some sort of secret mission. She gave a small snort at that thought as she felt someone was behind her. She took in a breath as he, Irvine, placed his arms around her shoulders. This was something that getting confusing to her now. She gave a smirk as she listened to him, muting her own mic. “Well I would agree. Though she seems a bit, out of place don't you think?” She asked as she turned her head slightly to look at him. Much like herself and Irvine, they weren’t exactly in Pulse attire either. She looked at the girl again then with a small nod of her head, “I don't think that she is from here either.” She said to him. Riley gave more thought on this for a small moment but was caught off her guard when something pricked at her ear.
Riley gave a slight jump as she instinctively raised a hand of to the side that Irvine was on, she turned her head to face him wondering what had invaded her ear. She looked to Irvine with a shake of her head as she pulled out the twig that was in his hair. “See what happens when you hide in bushes?” She asked with a smirk raising her hand again to pat the other side of his cheek. “People get hurt.” She said with a small snort as she looked back to Hope. “But what I think is that you should not say anything else to him, see what the kid can do.” She told him with a firm nod of her head. “And if you have really taught him anything, then he should not have a problem.” She said with a small smirk. “But do not fear, if he is anything like you, then you wont have a problem either.” Riley told him patting his cheek again just because. And that was truth! She knew first hand how good Irvine was at this, and had in fact knowingly suffered from it every day she had been with him.
But this was not something that she was complaining about. She had a genuine love for Irvine, and she thought that he knew it, but it would come up if anything needed to be said about it and she would not crawl at his feet for acceptance, it was the fact that he gave it to her with her not really having to do anything all. She smiled at this though even with just inches away from her. Riley leaned back more on the bench very aware of Irvine's presence. She then looked back to him, “See, he has it under control.” She said as she watched Hope actually start talking to the girl, she was impressed. But she was also proceeding on the fact that he had really pulled his foot out of his mouth and started talking to her, with no second thought about it, of course she had initiated the conversation, but that did not matter. She gave another smirk as she watched them leaning back in the bench again, knowing that it was just driving him mad. Maybe he would actually move from behind her and sit next to her on the bench instead of trying to kill with unknown twigs about his hair.

Hope's eyes turned into saucers hearing Irvine desperately call out his name over the earpiece. Who-what? What was going on? What did he do wrong? This was supposed to be good, right? Hope was within about two feet of a girl who was just about as pretty as anyone he knew around the same age, and he hadn't said anything stupid to her to ruin it yet. He saw himself as off to a brilliant start and he thought Irvine would have been singing his praises instead of sounding so panicked. But...uh....yeah, Irvine did have a point about freaking her out.... Hope supposed it wasn't every day that this girl's audience got so...close during a performance. Hope could have ki- could have kiiii- could have....uh, patted her shoulder if he wanted to. Yeah. So taking Irvine's advice, he remained quiet as he sat there with her, pushing himself back about half a foot just to make sure she didn't scream Weirdo! and attack him as soon as she finished and opened her eyes.
Unless she was blind. That would really make the situation difficult. The uniform she wore....could have been from a school for the blind or...something?
She finished while he aimlessly speculated, and to his surprise, turned to look at him fairly.....calmly. Hope looked back at her....completely petrified. While she apparently tried to figure out who this strange guy randomly sitting beside her was, Hope slowly let his countenance change from an expression of pure fear to a wide, beaming smile. She couldn't turn down a bright smile like this one.....right? People had told Hope that he had a cute smile. So....here it was. Cuteness.
Lo and behold, she just said hello to him. Hope's eyes once again became saucers at the sound of her voice, and the friendly greeting. He opened his mouth to say...say.....what was he supposed to say? Oh yeah, he should say hello back, but instead he found himself looking back towards the bench where Riley had been sitting, hoping to gain some confidence. Now Irvine had joined her there and they seemed....partially occupied. He kept the glance short, turning back to the girl as she.....apologized to him? Was that what she was doing? "Uh..." Hope had reached the moment of truth. Well, the first moment of truth. "N-no. The music was....was really beautiful....a-and relaxing." In his panic, each and every word made him sound like a fool in his own mind. Though...he'd complemented her, right? Nothing bad about that. Hope stole one more glance over to Riley and Irvine on the bench just to make sure he was a-okay. Etro, he hoped so.
Okay, okay. Now more conversation. Opening his mouth and....letting it hang open for a couple of seconds, Hope willed his brain to work so he wouldn't look or sound like a stammering, nervous fool. He needed a little confidence. Just imagine....just imagine....he was still practicing lines with Irvine and Riley. "So....you're...." No, that was the beginning of a statement. Hope had been thinking of a question. "Are you from Palumpolum? I don't think I recognize you from...school. You know, school on Cocoon." ....That made some sense. By Hope's guess, she wasn't much older than him, so if she had been from his home city he would have remembered her from some of his classes. He considered adding an Irvine-esque line like I would have remembered such a pretty face....but that was Irvine. That wasn't Hope.
Well, not Hope until he found some confidence, anyway....and if this girl didn't just brush him off completely, he'd get a nice little boost to that confidence.
Maybe.

Out of nowhere, a guy had appeared to sit next to her, she assumed so he could enjoy her song, but then again, it could easily be heard halfway across the area as well, so there had to be another reason as well. Maybe he wanted to ask something, or ask her to please not play here anymore because it irritated him. Or maybe he just wanted to befriend her? Maybe he was alone here as well, just like herself and Laguna. Now he was staring at her with big, shocked eyes, and Deuce wasn’t certain what to do here. Should she just get up and leave? Tell him sorry, but she was meeting with a friend and run like the wind? No, that would be rather rude, and besides, it was entirely possible this guy wanted to make friends but was just too shy to start a conversation. If anyone knew what it was like to be shy, it was Deuce. Nowadays, it wasn’t so bad, but back when she’d been a little kid, yeah, she’d been really shy and quiet. Thankfully, she’d met and befriended Cinque, whose extroverted nature had rubbed off on her somewhat. And not too long afterwards, she’d entered Class Zero, where she’d met the rest of her friends. Spending so many years together, it was almost impossible to still be shy around them. But new people? She could easily understand how that would be intimidating.
Seemingly without cause, he suddenly smiled at her joyfully. He seemed… rather happy. Maybe he wasn’t so shy after all? Deuce found herself returning the smile, she couldn’t help it, he seemed like a real sweetheart. One of those kids who would pretend to be really tough, but was actually like the definition of a softy. So cute. Maybe it was just the smile, he had a pleasant smile. Deciding that smiling at each other indefinitely was going to get them exactly nowhere, Deuce followed up on the smile with a simple greeting. If he was going to make an effort, so would she. She could use some friends in this strange new land. If only so she wouldn’t feel so alone all the time, and if they could help her find a way back home? That would be fantastic! Another silence fell as he awkwardly looked towards some couple sitting on a bench. Deuce followed his gaze and stared at them for a second before scratching her neck and looking down at her flute. So… a conversation would be nice, right? What to talk about? She didn’t like to admit it, but she’d gotten kind of rusty with these things, this… meeting new people. She was so used to being with her classmates pretty much all the time that she had no idea where to start now that she was sitting with someone completely new, who seemed equally lost. At times like these, she wished she was more like her classmates. Like Cinque and Cater for example, who were spontaneous enough to take this situation and just… handle it. Like a boss. Though the person she really wanted to be like was Seven. In some ways, their personalities weren’t too different. They were both calm and polite, though Seven wasn’t as open with her affections as Deuce, and Deuce wasn’t as confident as Seven. Well… it wouldn’t be fun if they were exactly the same anyway. The reason she enjoyed going to class each day was because there were so many different personalities amongst their group of friends. Never a dull day. But right now was not the time to think on it. For now, she just needed to get a conversation started. And as was usually her strategy, she did it by commenting on her flute, asking whether she’d bothered him with it. Why not? It was as good a topic starter as any. Also, she had worried about that… a little. But thankfully, it hadn’t bothered him. Apparently, he’d even enjoyed it. She smiled again as he stammered the words out and nodded her head lightly, “I’m glad you liked it,” She started quietly, shifting to properly face him, “It relaxes me too. I always play when I’m nervous or sad or whatever.”
Deuce couldn’t help but giggle a little when he stared at her with his mouth hanging open like that. And she thought she was bad at talking to new people! He asked her about her school, mentioned something about a place called PallyPolly on Cocoon… what the heck was a Cocoon? “Um…” she mumbled, looking down at her flute as she tried to come up with a decent response. Cripes, she knew she wasn’t a star pupil like Queen, but she never thought she sucked at geography this badly. Maybe Laguna had been right… maybe, just maybe, she really wasn’t in Oriens anymore. Ever since she got here, all she’d felt was confusion. She didn’t recognize anything, no one knew a thing about Rubrum, they all mentioned places she’d never even heard of but somehow managed to sound almost familiar at times. All those things combined, it would seem Laguna was indeed right. There was no sense in denying it any longer. But… if she really was in a different ‘world’, that meant Hope would think her a crazy person for mentioning a place that (to him) didn’t even exist. She bit her lip and glanced back up at him. She really didn’t like being all by herself. And he seemed like a nice guy, someone she’d actually want to be friends with, she couldn’t go and screw it up by telling him she was from Fantasyland or some other strange story. ‘Hello crazy person’ she could see him thinking before strolling off in search of normal friends. “No… not exactly.” She started, smiling awkwardly as she pushed a lock of hair behind her ear, “I’m not from Cocoon.” She assumed Cocoon was some sort of city. She wouldn’t have to say where she was from, right? No, keep it vague. Vague and mysterious.

Irvine looked up again to the girl, who fortunately still had her eyes shut as she played and was unable to see the couple scrutinizing her from the bench. Riley was right, the uniform, it was not one Irvine had seen anyone else wearing around here. Besides, were the schools around here even up and running yet? Irvine assumed not since Hope had not really mentioned anything, and even if they were, why would she be wearing uniform outside of school? Irvine had never even worn his uniform in Garden, although he knew he was a bit of an exception in that. All in all he had his own suspicions about the girl being from around here or not. After all, their portal couldn't be the only one in the universe or certainly he hoped not, else they were never going to get home. "You could be right there." He didn't need to explain his reasoning to Riley, she was the one who had mentioned it do doubtless she had figured these things out for herself already. As he watched, Hope pushed himself back a little from the girl. Not perfect, but hey, at least he wasn’t right up in her face anymore, and when the girl opened her eyes there was no jump or shock on her face. Awesome! Irvine looked away now before she could catch him looking like some kind of weirdo. Especially the kind of weird still half in a bush with binoculars.
"Sorry," Irvine apologized as she pulled a twig out of his hair that he had not even realised was poking Riley in the side of the head. Then his eyes sparkled, "Better let me kiss that better for you." Without letting her time to protest, Irvine kissed her on the jaw just under her ear, then immediately moved his mouth down to her neck. He doubted she would be too upset, they'd been together here a month and he had done worse than this. He answered her again in between kisses, pretty glad that they had both turned their microphones off for Hope's sake, "I don't think I'll- have a problem- either." He squeezed his arms slightly, still hugging her around her shoulders like he had been before. Well, she had turned off her mic too, so what was the problem? As far as he was concerned, a minute not winning Riley over was a minute wasted.
Meanwhile, Hope had managed to engage the girl in conversation, Irvine was still listening clearly to his student even though he had distracted himself with Riley. The compliment was good! A little stuttering perhaps, but no problem at all, her music was a nice simple place to start off. Irvine smiled slightly, while still nuzzling at Riley's neck. This was going well! For both of them! Then... Irvine pulled his head back as he realised Hope was stalling, and hand reaching up to unmute his microphone and provide help, a few general conversation topics jumping to mind immediately. Ask her where she's from! Ask her anything! Everyone loves to talk about themselves! However Hope managed to get back on track before more of Irvine's advice was necessary. School, perfectly fine choice for a question. Phew. Irvine turned back towards Riley again, a grin back on his face and his eyes warm and bright, "Where were we?" Irvine was still positioned looking down at her boobs and he really wanted to slide his hands down from her shoulders... Maybe he needed to distract her first. More neck kissing? That might just work. She was going to end up with a hickey (or three) at this rate.
He picked up the girl's words, which made for an interesting answer to Hope's question about her school - so she really wasn't from Cocoon? Well fortunately Hope should be better than handling that news than most, considering he already knew Irvine and Riley (Irvine's powers of secrecy had held up for all of about two meetings). Irvine let up on bothering Riley for a second to listen to what Hope's response to this surprise would be. Hopefully actual words and not some kind of strangled squawk, although he had done well enough on the talking front so far. At least well enough that he hadn't screwed up anyway. Irvine could appreciate that the kid was not as confident (over-confident) with women as Irvine was, so he had to be realistic in his expectations. Still, he was quite pleased at developments so far. Irvine gave Riley an inquisitive look, as though asking her what she thought they should do next. He actually wanted to talk to the girl himself, to ask her about the portals, but he couldn’t rush in now like a weirdo with a hidden earpiece. He’d give Hope some time to do his thing, hopefully that would go well and then him and Riley could perhaps... casually bump into them. Or not. Despite the importance of the portals and getting home, Irvine felt loyal enough to his pupil to give him a fair run at this before he went barging in and mucking things up with his questions. Riley gave him a smirk, “Of course I am.” She told him mainly to smite the hell out of him. But even if he did know, Irvine of all people could take a joke, unless it was about his about his pride or manhood, whichever he held dearest. She gave a small laugh at this thought. Riley watched as the kid spoke with the girl, he was indeed doing decent now. Nothing really to complain about just yet. She looked around at all the others around them; it was true that they, meaning herself and Irvine were clearly the oldest there. It was kind of disturbing but Riley got over it. It was no sooner than she had freed the stray twig from his hair that she felt his lips on her skin. Riley cleared her throat suddenly sitting up straighter than she was before. Yet she knew this new position would give Irvine more access, and probably more than he needed right now. Then again…no there was no then again. She could really feel the shutter that was released down her spine and she was sure that Irvine had felt it too. But Riley was stronger than she let on, two could play this game and Irvine was just asking for it now.
Riley arched a brow at him saying that he would not have a problem either, “Ohh really? So confident!” She said to him with a smirk. But had he not been so confident things might have been different than they were now. So she was glad for his over confident self. That was pretty much the best thing that she liked about him, personality wise at least. Did she really need to say what she liked about him physically? No, it did not need saying. It was after he was distracted with Hope when she took the initiative. Riley turned her head to face his profile, she let her breath trace around his ear and then back up again, she time she gave the action a small twist, bringing the lobe of his ear into her mouth. She continued on, letting her lips drift behind his ear, “Ohh right about there I believe.” She told him smirking against his skin. Yet she was sure that what she was doing was blocked from view by the top of Irvine’s hat their assaulting each other would not help Hope’s case. But he would have to get used to it.
Riley could not help but think on the girl not being from her like herself and Irvine. It was like this world pulled people in its airspace and did not want to let them free of it. But this girl was alone. Hope was form here and she had Irvine and vice versa. But she had no one here with her at all. Riley shook her head at this thought and then turned her full attention back to Irvine. Riley let all these thoughts pass, she let her lips trail back around his ear and across his temple. That was one thing that had rubbed off on her, and that was the whole confidence thing again. Because it had not been like this the whole time they had been here. The first few days it had been painful for them both. It was then that she had decided to take the initiative again, dangerous, she knew this. Riley knew deep down that he would deny her, especially at play time. She could not help but smirk at this thought. She passed his jaw line, bringing a hand up to grip at his arm, she let her lips brush across his, and for the moment she was very content.

Awkward chuckles were all that Hope could muster for the few seconds after the girl had explained that the flute-playing made her less nervous. He should....try to continue that conversation a bit, shouldn't he? What did Hope do when he was nervous? Well, aside from stammer and...laugh quietly and....rub his neck a lot. His brain wouldn't allow him to remember. The only thoughts he could process were wow, she's extremely pretty, wow, that's a short skirt, and wow, I'm really bumbling this up now, aren't I?. "I..." Come on, Hope, come on. Come up with anything to keep the chat going. Anyone could tell that the gears in his brain were working overtime. "...don't play any instruments. Maybe...you could teach me how to play the flute sometime? I-If you want to."
...Wow. That actually wasn't completely idiotic, aside from the fact that he'd just asked a girl he'd only exchanged about two sentences with to take the time to teach him how to play an instrument. But...she seemed nice? He wouldn't be altogether surprised if she tentatively agreed to actually teach him...though he would probably have a small heart attack.
Swallowing and taking another confidence-gathering glance towards his accomplices now occupying the bench a ways away...Hope really wished he hadn't looked at them. They- they were getting it on, right there over the back of the bench. Okay...so maybe "getting it on" was a strong word, but weren't they supposed to be helping him? They were, right? They were here to help him, not cause a public scene. Hope watched them in horror (and in minor jealousy for Irvine) for a few moments, his face turned away from the young woman. He swallowed heavily again, turning on another smile as his eyes turned towards the girl again. Don't let her know you're with them...don't let her know... Innocence completely swept over his face, and he shrugged as if he was just as surprised to see the oddballs making out on the bench back there as anyone.
He kind of snapped back to sensibility once she hesitantly told him she wasn't from Cocoon. "Not from Cocoon?" Hope studied her face for a second before thinking this over. How...was that even possible? She couldn't have been from here on Pulse because Fang and...Vanille were the only ones...who had been left from this planet. Then it hit him. Irvine wasn't from Cocoon either. This was perfect! "Oh, you mean you came through one of the portals!" The exclamation came out even more excitedly than he had anticipated it would, and he instantly rocked back and calmed down a bit. He didn't want to completely scare her. "I know a guy, Ir-" Hope stopped himself only a half of a second before he motioned towards the bench at Irvine. .....That would have been disastrous. "-er, he came through a portal too. It's...not that strange here these days," Hope said, and to his surprise the words sounded rather reassuring. He was succeeding!....somewhat.
"Where are you from?", he asked, holding tightly to this budding conversation. He was on a roll now, no time to slow down!

She’d figured he would say or ask something about the flute, you know, keep that conversation going, but she honestly hadn’t seen this question coming. He wanted to learn how to play the flute? Was that the reason he’d approached her? Even if she wasn’t a native here, she could see that the people here hadn’t lived in this village for very long. It made sense that there weren’t any music teachers around during times like these, but wasn’t that because this really wasn’t the time to be learning something like this? Of course, even this war would come to an end eventually… and it was indeed best to just keep moving ahead with your life rather than keeping it on hold all this time. Sure, why not learn how to do something you enjoyed? But… was it really a good idea to agree to it? Nice though this village looked, it wasn’t home. All her friends and family were waiting back in Rubrum, and she had every intention of going back to see them through this war. Even if she couldn’t do much, she would do whatever she could to support them. Together, they could stop it. Together, they could stop Cid, she knew they could. “I-I could give you some pointers… sure,” she nodded and awkwardly played with her flute for a few seconds, before following Hope’s gaze towards the… the ‘happy’ couple on the nearby bench. Some people really had no shame, did they? Deuce felt her whole face burning up and quickly lowered her head again, determined not to look at the scene too much, lest she comment on it and sound completely inappropriate and--- wait, they were the ones making out in public! Why should she feel embarrassed? She looked back up to see Hope shrug, and she let out an awkward giggle in response, biting her lip as she did so. Stupid people making her all flustered, this was their fault.
Her relief couldn’t be measured when the subject changed. Anything was better than stupidly lurking in on an obviously private moment. Or a moment that was supposed to be private anyway. Yes, even having to pretend she had any idea what Hope was talking about when he mentioned Cocoon was better than the show that took place before their very eyes. When he mentioned the portals, her eyes widened and she simply stared at Hope in complete shock. He knew about the portals? He knew about the portals! He really did! Shock was replaced by joy as she dropped the flute in her lap and grabbed Hope’s shoulders, shaking him lightly. “You know of them? This is fantastic! I thought… well… it doesn’t matter what I thought!” she let go of him again and thought of the possibility of going back home now. “I’m from a place called Rubrum, it’s in Oriens,” she told him excitedly, all the embarrassment and shyness quickly washed away by a newfound happiness. “Was your friend from there too?” Deuce could barely contain her joy, and felt the strongest urge to just throw her arms around Hope and hug him silly. He’d made her so happy by mentioning those portals! There was hope after all then, she could find a way home. It wasn’t just a one-way portal, there were more like it, and they lead to other places. There had to be one that lead to Oriens too, she’d just have to look for it.

He put the first two fingers of his hand to his chin for a moment as he thought, wondering what he should do. Fortunately it seemed like the portals was just the topic that Hope and the girl required to start up a proper conversation. Excellent! Irvine really wanted Hope to be successful now even more than before, because if things between the two younger teens went well then Irvine and Riley could tactfully slip away and then- well then Irvine would probably toss Riley over his shoulder and run home with the way she was acting. Rubrum, Oriens? Neither meant anything to Irvine, but then it was not as if anybody except Riley would know what he meant if he announced he was from Galbadia. Not that he even was from Galbadia originally for all he knew, he was just an orphan, he could be from anywhere. He should really ask Matron - Edea - about that sometime, see if she knew. Irvine had never really asked as a kid, he had assumed he was from nearby to the orphanage, but that Laguna guy had been from Galbadia and Squall had ended up in the orphanage just the same. Maybe the kids were just from all over the place. Edea had sure managed to pick up enough of them anyway, enough to start all the different kinds of SeeD groups.
Irvine was a little surprised when Riley was suddenly breathing words in his other ear, focusing on listening to Hope and the girl so much for a minute that he had almost forgotten that he had been in the middle of pestering Riley. Then she started doing other things to his ear and he was fairly sure he was melting. Immediately he stopped thinking about Hope and the conversation taking place in his earpiece. Which was possibly just as well, otherwise he would have realised that him and Riley had picked up an audience. "You're a very bad girl, distracting me like this," he grinned to her, blatantly trying to sound as sexual as possible when he said it. Her hand was on his arm and her lips on his. Awesome.
After a minute he broke off the kiss and stood up properly, then vaulted over the back of the bench and finally sat his ass down beside Riley properly. Now he could be more comfortable to kiss her, which he proceeded to do, running his hand into the back of her short red hair and bringing her mouth up to meet his own. He knew that he should be paying more attention to Hope and the girl, he was supposed to be helping Hope out and he was more or less completely ignoring him now. Or worse, providing a distraction. This was far too fun to stop though, the thought of them being in public not crossing Irvine’s mind since he was pretty much shameless anyway. Drawing in a breath, he pulled his head back again, but kept his hand in Riley’s hair, then started whispering in her ear again, “If Hope hits it off with this chick we could go home. I’ll do all this to you and more.” Irvine planted his lips on hers again, his hand running down her back. He knew he had to stop and pay attention, he kind of wanted to stop just to tease her, but dammit it was hard. Why did she have to be so good-looking? He just wanted to touch her and kiss her... Okay, try keep those thoughts PG-13 in public, he thought to himself before he really started to let things get out of hand.
