Qun’mi slept on her bed in her apartment, blissfully dead to the world. She’d had a long couple of days, chasing down the world for Cid. That was getting more and more common. Damn it, she was a soldier, not a girl that did the bidding of every need and whim that Cid decided to send her on. But that didn’t matter now that she finally got a few moments of free time to sleep. She had been resting for about an hour when a soft knock at the door sounded. Groggily Qun’mi woke slightly, didn’t hear a sound and dropped her head back to the pillow in order to get a few more moments of rest when the second rap sounded, this time a bit louder, as if the person behind it was gaining confidence as time went on. Groaning, Qun’mi went to pull the blankets up over her head and shout a ‘get the hell away from me’ to whoever was there, before a sharp pain stung her calf. Gasping, Qun’mi sat straight up, gritting her teeth and dulling her eyes in order to stand it. Damn, it hurt when it did that. Realizing then that her hands were clenched tightly into fists, she stared at the wall and then muttered under her breath. Rolling out of bed, she shouted a quick, crabby "Give me a cotton pickin’ second,” and found some clothes to put on over her pajamas, which was just a bra and underwear. Slipping into the pants and button up shirt, she stomped over toward the door, not happy to be woken up and even unhappier to have to open the door. Snapping it open quickly, she stood there and glared at the poor young man standing there shifting his weight from one leg to the other every few seconds. Blowing out a frustrated breath, she didn’t give him any greeting. Rubbing her calf with her leg, she grumbled out a “What do you want?”, and waited for him to answer.

He was obviously nervous as he stumbled over his words and blabbered about nothing and not getting to the point. “Listen, I’ve been gone for the last four days, haven’t had time to think, let alone get enough to eat or sleep, so I don’t have all day to spend standing here while you act like I’m going to beat you if you speak up. Now, do you have something to say? If so, spit it out, or kindly get off my steps and leave me alone so I can get a decent amount of sleep.” That gave him the motivation to speak up. Without looking up he explained that one Qator Bashtar wanted her. She was about to slam the door in his face and tell the boy to tell him to go to hell when he shoved a piece of paper in her hands and fled. Rolling her eyes, Qun’mi rubbed the sleep from her eyes and then opened the note to look inside.

”Trute,

Some information might have been finally obtained regarding the free flying machine that gave us the odd tattoos and something that may be tied up with it. Meet me by the transportation at 1430 hours.

Qator Bashtar”

Grumbling, Qun’mi stuffed the note in her pocket and glanced at her watch. 2:10 was what she read. She still had twenty minutes until she was supposed to meet him. With a yawn, Qun’mi turned to find some decent clothes that she could go meet him in. Sliding her clothes off and sliding some on, she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes too, before turning and walking out the door, scooping up her daggers and running a hand through her hair. Thirteen minutes until she was supposed to be there. Running across a few streets, Qun’mi showed up at the transportation center with a few minutes to spare. “Blondie?”, she called out, peering around before making her way to the office, which was most likely where he was. She didn’t know what this was, if it was some sort of joke or what, but she decided anything she could do to get rid of this damned brand she would do.

Qator had been pacing for a good while now. His hand pressed to his chin, his eyes downcast with his free hand behind his back. He’d hardly gotten any sleep or food lately, his mind far too busy to allow him some sort of nourishment, even if all this depriving himself of anything good wasn’t healthy, he was trying to figure out that machine he and Qun’mi had ran into not too long ago. He shifted his right arm back around and pulled his sleeve up a bit to see the blocky looking tattoo there on his bicep. A discouraging sigh escaped his lips as he started his pacing again, wondering what it meant, what the hazy dream he had was…and when Qun’mi was going to get here. Hopefully the Milites courier had made it to her apartment and didn’t get chewed out by her or anything, he knew she was probably just as exhausted as he was…but there wasn’t any time to waste, especially when a discovery could be made.

Stopping his pacing and stepping up towards a piece of metal on the ground, Qator kneeled down to one knee and eyed it once more, it looked like it had the same markings as the machine that had branded them. Sighing as he looked up and a few feet away was a jeep he’d rode in earlier and discovered a portal, hence requesting her presence. He didn’t want to risk getting too close, but if these things had any connections to one another, it could be the key to unlocking all of this. If nothing came out of this, Qator would truly go mad, unable to figure it out, his head just might explode. Moving a hand to his forehead, he rubbed his eyes and stood straight up, looking around and not seeing the blonde woman anywhere in his sights. Glancing at the time on his communication device, he noticed it was a few minutes until he had requested her presence. It shouldn’t take this long to get to the transportation location, if his messenger didn’t get to her in time…words would be spoken, was one so incompetent that they couldn’t deliver a slip of paper? Pathetic.

Sighing heavily once more, Qator leaned over and picked up the piece of metal he’d found before trailing away towards one of the offices nearby. Setting the metal on the desk, he rested his palms on the top of the wood of the table, wondering what to make of this. Slipping his eye patch off, he rubbed at his once concealed eye and just let it get a little air. It was closed and had a scar over it, not too bad, but it made it easier on him to continue to wear the eye patch. Less stares went to the patch, more went to the scar. Hearing the faint calling of his oh so awesome nickname ‘Blondie’, Qator lifted his head and turned a bit, grabbing his eye patch and slipping it back over his head and adjusting it as needed. Seeing her approach, he stepped aside so she could see the metal piece with distinct markings on it, just like that one that attacked them. “Trute, you’re on time. Good. I was out with a small squad this morning, we happened to come across a few scattered piece of this metal, it was shredded for the most part, and a few yards away, a portal. Now see the markings?” Qator said as he lifted the metal up and started tracing his finger against some of them. “They look like the same ones on the machine that gave us some trouble. If the portal is still there, I say it’s worth checking out, if not for the Milites’ sake, then for ourselves.”

Setting down the piece of machinery, Qator breezed past Qun’mi towards the jeep he had ready to go, it wouldn’t be a long drive, especially if he was driving, that usually cut time in half since on ground vehicles he was what we like to call a speed demon. “I don’t want to hear any complaints, this is for our own good…I’d rather get rid of these tattoos first, then sleep later.” He commented, noticing she was obviously tired and worn out, the sooner this was taken care of the better. Patting the holster strapped to his side that carried his pistol, he was ready to get going, turning around and standing at the side of the jeep he waited on her, letting her get in first instead of getting her butt in his face again, not that he mind- okay, anyways. Yes, it was time to get going.

With a little yawn, Qun’mi covered her mouth with the back of her hand and scanned the building after she had spoken Qator’s name. Well, his nickname. Same difference really. Rubbing her eyes, she continued on toward the office, sure that he would have either met her by the entrance or she was supposed to go into the office. No one was ever around at this time of the day. Qun’mi knew why, people being lazy, but hell, she had her own problems to worry about. If they wanted to be lazy, and if they got away with it, then kudos to them. Eventually it would catch up to them. With purposeful strides she made her way to where she hoped Qator was. If this was all some prank and he wasn’t even here, then she might just have to track him down, strangle him, and then head back to bed to catch a few more minutes of shut eye. Why was it that lately they had always been together when she was tired and crabby anyway? Well whatever, it wasn’t like she needed to impress anyone with her charm anyway. Rolling her neck then, she felt the satisfying ‘crack’ and made it to the door of the office. Pulling it open, she saw Qator step to the side. For a moment her gaze was pulled to him, scanning him up and down without shame. Hell, he was easy on the eyes, she could look if she wanted to. Everyone needed some eye candy, and everything about him was that.

Leaning against the doorway casually, Qun’mi crossed her arms over her chest and glanced up at his eyes instead of at his body. “You’d better have a damned good reason for dragging me out here. And send a man to get me next time, would you? That shrimp just stood there blubbering like an idiot for ten minutes before I could get him to get out what he needed to say.” Qun’mi wouldn’t mind so much being woken up by a real man, but going to the door for some boy barely out of diapers was disappointing to say the least.

When he addressed her, Qun’mi shrugged and dropped her arms from over her chest, advancing into the office and closer to where he stood next to the desk. “I’m always on time,” she mentioned absent mindedly, still listening to what he had to say. She didn’t like being woken up, but hell, if he had found something out and they could get rid of these damned brands, then she was all for it. The sooner they got rid of them, the better, at least in her eyes. She studied it from where he stood and held it, taking in the symbols and the overall look that it held. Still paying attention, she just nodded, not really having anything to say, but she did step forward to pick it up herself once he had set it down. Studying it closely, she noticed all the symbols and rubbed her hands over it gently. It was then that she noticed he had disappeared. With a slight groan, she set the metal back down on the desk and turned heel to follow him.

Noticing the jeep all ready, Qun’mi made her way over toward it. Being observant, Qun’mi also noticed that he had hesitated to get in and was standing there. Well, well, well, he was actually learning. A bit of a disappointment actually, since she couldn’t really lie and say she had disliked crawling over him the last time. “Can’t handle the appeal, eh Bashtar?”, she taunted, though her voice was full of amusement. Clambering into the vehicle, she settled herself in, even remembering that he didn’t like it when she put her feet up on the dash board. Well she would behave today, as much as humanly possible. Tapping her fingers against the door, she gave a bit of a shrug when he mentioned no complaining. “I’d be complaining by now if I was going to, Bashtar. The only complaint I have was that you sent a little boy to do a mans job, and I would have preferred a man to be woken up by. More exciting that way,” she finished a bit wickedly. Face turned serious a moment later though, and she ran a hand through her blonde hair as she continued on. “I want this damned brand gone, anything I can do to get it gone, I’ll do.”

This was important, and if Qun’mi was going to complain about it the entire time, Qator was going to go through the roof. This was in regards to their brands, anything he could do or discover to help them out he’d do his best. It was irritating, not only the brand itself with it’s stinging almost itchy pain, but the fact that he couldn’t do anything about it, or that he didn’t know what it really meant…that’s what bothered him the most. In fact, it bothered him so much, he felt sympathy for Qun’mi Trute, for that woman with a mouth on her and a large attitude to go with those snarky words of hers. He felt sympathy for her, and for himself of course. They’d been branded at the same time roughly, left to do whatever it was that marked machine wanted them to do…so…now what? They didn’t have the slightest idea as to what they were supposed to do, all Qator could remember was a grey hazy dream that involved a war and Rubrum…that could’ve been just a random dream for all he knew.

Of course he had a damned good reason for dragging her out here. That’s when Qator stepped to the side and began to explain things, he was more interested in finding a way to get rid of these damn brands rather than worry about whether or not he sent a boy or man to go wake her up. She was just being obnoxious. It seemed that was the usual feeling whenever they were around one another. The symbols on the metal were so similar to the ones on the fal’cie they had encountered. It made Qator believe he was on to something, they could go to the portal from which it came or went, and hopefully unlock the secrets of these brands. If not, then he’d be mighty disappointed, angry and pissed off was more like it, and he didn’t dare imagine what Qun’mi would be thinking if he had dragged her out here for absolutely nothing worthwhile. The thought made him a bit hesitant, but in a matter of seconds those feelings were gone, and he was off on his way out of the office, trailing towards one of the military jeeps, ready to get going and find this portal one way or another.

Stepping to the side and letting Qun’mi get into the jeep first, Qator smirked and shook his head ever so slightly. “Sure, if that’s what you want to believe.” He commented after half-watching her clamber into the jeep. Not that he didn’t like the sight of Qun’mi-butt in his face or anything…he just needed to be focused on this task, this…mission so to speak, rather than Qun’mi and her body, or anything else for that matter. The less distractions that would initiate around him, the better. Of course the distractions wouldn’t hold off, especially with the blond in the jeep continuing her ‘complaints’ about not having a man wake her up. The thought did make him smirk a bit wider as he climbed into the driver’s side of the car, shooting a glance at her as he raised an eyebrow, her words thoroughly amusing him. “More exciting for the man I’m sure.” He commented briefly before turning his gaze straight ahead…no more messing around.

“Well hopefully today is thce day we can figure them out. I’m pretty positive about it all…don’t let my tone fool you on that one, Trute.” He said before taking the wheel and starting out of the base, moving along a few normal paved roads, it wasn’t too far away, but the drive would lead them into a more wilderness area outside of Byakko, outside the Empire itself. After a few moments of driving, Qator turned off the road and onto a dirty and rocky road, definitely not manmade. With his eyes – er…his one good eye – searching, he spotted a cluster of metal pieces on the grass, and that’s when he pulled the vehicle to a stop, his eyes catching sight of nothing but those metal pieces and the grass they laid on top of. Where had the portal gone?!?!?! It couldn’t have closed that quickly…he frowned heavily, his face full of worry and shock more than anger. He leaped out of the jeep, landing with a small grunt on the ground, standing up to his full height he walked towards where the portal used to be, raising his arms and folding them behind his head, grabbing at the back roots of his hair in frustration and fear. “Maybe…it’s further out than I thought. Come on.” He said before practically stomping his way forward, searching frantically for this portal he’d spotted earlier…

Settling into her seat, Qun’mi grinned over at Qator as he clambered into the seat beside her. “You know me Qator. I only like to believe the truth.” The appeal was there, that tension. Well hell, of course it would be. He was easy on the eyes, and all man. Of course the appeal would be there. Reaching up her hands, Qun’mi rubber her eyes, blinking a few times and then narrowing them in front of her to see clearly. She was tired and had just been woken up. That was her problem. Yup, of course it was. Cutting her eyes over at him, she took him in, noting for the umpteenth time how defined his body was. Well…a girl could start getting ideas just from looking at that body. ’Obviously too tired,’ she thought then. What was it about being tired that made her mind run places it really shouldn’t run? Shaking her head, Qun’mi pulled up a leg to place it on the seat, resting her arm on it, eyes cutting over toward the well built blonde. The look he shot her when he got settled in the drivers seat made her give him a challenging look back.

Giving him a throaty laugh, she settled into a more comfortable position, resting her clasped hands on her stomach, her leg then extending until her foot was pressed up against the dash board. “Hell yes more exciting for the man. Then again, you might not know about that, hmm Blondie?" Oh yes, the challenge was there, and the tension till crackled in the air. No one would blame her. After all, he was appealing in every way. She needed to stop seeing him when she had just woken up. Really…the ideas were too much for her.

It was then that they got serious and she mentioned that she would do anything to get rid of the brand that was on her leg. Still, despite the serious tones and the conversation, his mentioning that she shouldn’t let his oh so excited tone fool her, she burst out into laughter. “That’s funny Qator. Really, it is.” As always then though, the conversation fell flat and she simply enjoyed the silence as they rolled down the road. Because this was no mission, Qun’mi simply lay down, curling herself up on the seat, the top of her head brushing up against Qator’s leg. He could keep watch himself, since he thought he knew where he was going. She would just rest a bit so she’d be able to keep her mind away from Qator and his tight pants and concentrate more on getting the brands taken away. “You got watching us covered with your one eye Blondie?”, she mumbled out, scooting around to get comfortable and then closing her eyes.

When the truck ground to a stop and he hopped out, Qun’mi jerked up, some of her blonde hair sticking in weird angles. Yawning, she smoothed down her hair and jumped out of her side of the truck. Making herself presentable as she walked toward him, she stifled yet another yawn and glanced at where he was standing and pulling at the roots of his hair. Taking a moment, Qun’mi turned and cracked her back, feeling a bit looser. Coming up beside him, she glanced from him to the ground and then back at him again, feeling her features tighten. Had he dragged her out here for nothing? Holding her tongue, Qun’mi crossed her arms over her chest and stared at him. “Yes…maybe it’s further up,” she commented dryly. There would be hell to pay if he had been lying to her about something up here that they should look at.

Qun’mi certainly was something else, anyone had to admit that should they have met her before. She was not like any typical woman out there. Most women that Qator came into contact with were generally very uncaring when it came to their personal image, how people saw them and what they thought of them. Women usually came after Qator and any other wealthy appealing man in flocks, they’d say whatever it took to get to them, but Qator surprisingly had better standards than that. So, what brought this topic from Qun’mi to Qator’s standards? Nothing really, but the truth still stood here, Qun’mi was one of a kind, and for that Qator was slightly thankful for her, she wasn’t like other women, she had self respect and pride that would hurt if something bad or a failure occurred, she was…she was just a category of her own, it was hard to explain, something Qator didn’t want to get deep into thought about, especially when she was talking about being woken up by a real man…ugh, his brain!

Smirking a grin, a challenging one as if to compete with hers, he shook his head slightly, feeling a little too confident but not liking to let his pride hurt like this. “I know plenty, Qun’mi, and don’t worry, I’ve got us covered.” he advised simply, keeping his eyes on the road and looking for the right area to turn off of, he wanted to find this portal as quickly as possible before it closed up. It couldn’t possibly be closing for awhile, so there was a little bit of time on their side, the only difficult part was pinpointing the exact location to where he had been earlier. Seeing the turn that led off the smooth path, Qator drove carefully but quickly, looking around and trying to spot his previous location, the only thing that really jumped out to him was a few tiny pieces of metal, almost trailing from where he had been, he followed that in the vehicle before stopping, parking and leaping out, seeing the larger cluster of metal, leaving a somewhat shocked look on his face that read something along the lines of ‘Oh shit.’

With almost a ghost white shade upon his face, Qator continued forward, stepping on and over some the metal he swore was right in front of the portal, he reached out and waved his hand around in the air, just to see if he was imagining things, but…he swore he saw one earlier! Where else did all of this crap come from!? Qun’mi was going to kill him, but he wasn’t so worried about that, he just wanted to know where his damn portal went! With a sudden burst of frustration, he started stomping off forward into a more clearing area, less trees and more like a field of grass, easy to see for a few miles but nothing extraordinary came to his sight. The portal was gone, and that was that. Her dry comment, it made him want to sigh and tug at the roots of his hair, but he kept a calm and cool composition. She could be mad at him all she wanted, but at least he had found some of the pieces of what seemed to be like the fal’cie they encountered. Maybe if they could decode it, there would be some answers on it? Highly unlikely.

It was then Qator’s brand started to tingle, though it wasn’t much more than irritation, but still bothersome. Turning back to face the soon-to-be-angry blond behind him, Qator rubbed a hand against the back of his neck, he genuinely felt a little bad, frustrated and of course embarrassed, but whatever. “It was here, I swear…it…must’ve closed up before we got here. I guess there’s nothing worth exploring now.”

Qun’mi couldn’t’ help but grin when he tried to convince her that he knew plenty AND he had them covered. Lowering her head to around his leg, she raised an eyebrow in his direction, scooting until her legs were tucked up and on the seat. At his words, Qun’mi reached over and patted his leg with her hand. “Alright Qator, I get it, you’re always on top…of things. You should prove it someday...that ability to be on top of things so well.” Qun’mi said that facetiously as she snuggled her head against his leg. Damn, this felt good. After being woken up by that little boy, the last thing she wanted to do was be in this damned truck, on her way to check out something that had to do with a brand that would end her life, either by crystal stasis or becoming a monster. Either way, it was just like dying, she wasn’t going to kid herself and say that it wasn’t, because it really, really was just like it. But at least she could rest now for a bit. Hell, Qator could have made a fuss and told her to sit up straight and act like the Master Sergeant that she was, but he hadn’t, and for that she would continue to be grateful. When push came to shove, he was a pretty decent guy, and had one hell of a body. That she’d always noticed. Almost disappointing that he’d been one of the few men to not make a pass at her. Another had been Cid…but hell, there was no way she wanted that. He could just stick to lusting after power. She didn’t want any bald love in her life.

She managed to rest her eyes for a few minutes before they arrived. Groaning as her headrest moved, Qun’mi sat up and started getting out of the truck. Yawning, she rubbed her eyes and then stepped out, stretching her body like a cat did after it had been sunning itself. She needed a moment to get her bearings and actually get down to the business of paying attention. Hell, this whole going from sleeping to being suddenly alert had never been her cup of tea, that was for sure. But she cracked her neck and then rolled her neck to get herself pumped and ready for this. Okay! Now what were they looking…

For?

There was nothing there. Furrowing her brow, Qun’mi glanced around her, looking for said item that he had stated would be there. Crossing her arms over her chest, she gave him a glare of ‘yeah, it’d better be ahead’, before she started to follow his retreating figure as he started to walk along. Hell…she had not been woken up and dragged out here while dog tired for absolutely nothing! If he had done that to her…oh boy, oooh boy, he was going to catch hell. He was definitely going to catch hell. But she would give him another change to try and redeem himself. If he could come up with something that was actually worthwhile, then she would let him off the hook and not even mention that she had been about to tear into him.

Until he said that it wasn’t here. “You ‘guess’?!” Qun’mi had had just about enough of this crap. Stalking toward Qator, she shouldered around him, grabbing the uniform below his chin and yanking him down toward her level. Planting her face right up close and personal to his, she stood toe to toe, eyes sparking with anger. “You ‘guess’ there’s nothing here to look at anymore?!” Oh, she was angry to say the least. Shoving him away from her, she scowled fiercely at him. “Damn you Bashtar. I’m sick of this game!” At that instant, her calf started to burn. Grunting, Qun’mi leaned over to rub it, frustration causing her eyes to burn, yet she refused to do anything about it. She couldn’t talk through the pain though, just grit her teeth and clutch her calf. “Damn…you,” she uttered, before kneeling onto one knee, bowing her head, eyes blazing.

Qator was actually filled with a bit of worry. His face turned at least one shade paler than his normal complexion. He wasn’t afraid of war, the possibility of dying by even the hands of one man he hated the most…that he could take and handle easily, but Qun’mi angry and with as much sleep as she’d been getting lately, it was a miracle she wasn’t cranky yet. Being cooperative on the way, even half sleeping against his leg – which was so unprofessional – but Qator had enough of a heart to leave her alone and let her have those few minutes to herself, not that he liked being a pillow for her…but still, he kept his mouth shut. It was now, being outside the vehicle and clearly looking at the place the portal had been, it was completely vacant of anything out of the ordinary. If Qator had a shovel with him now, he would’ve already started digging his own grave.

Staring at the open area, Qator gave off the stupid answer, the thing that had probably set Qun’mi off. Feeling and watching her shoulder past him, he remained silent, ready for the explosion within as he felt his collar being tugged, bringing his gaze down to her eye level. Qator could easily see the anger in her face, especially her eyes as she had been gripping at his shirt tightly, he was surprised she hadn’t clawed his skin underneath with as rage-filled as she seemed right now. The way she was reacting was completely unacceptable though, and it brought a rather unimpressed look to Qator’s face. Especially when she shoved him away, causing him to take only a half step back from the force of her push. Straightening his collar as he looked at the other blonde with a scowl on his face. “You think this is a game?! At least I’m looking for some way to help us out here. You may not have gotten a lot of sleep lately, Qun’mi, I haven’t either, but at least I’m still trudging forward instead of constantly whining about not getting to sit on my lazy ass and sleep.” He spit at her the words he spoke, meaning every bit of them…only slightly.

Feeling a bit of a stinging on his arm, Qator shook his head and tried to ignore it. He knew his emotions were effecting his brand now, otherwise the pain wouldn’t be escalating right now, but as he watched Qun’mi sink to one knee and clutch at her calf, where her brand was, Qator knew this was something that was affecting both of them. The anger…it was doing something, and it wasn’t good. “You can blame me all you want, Trute. But when you fail this focus and I survive…when I actually try to do something about it…then you’ll be sorry.” He hissed as his bicep then burned, as if a flame was actually touching his skin. Moving his opposite hand to the burn, he looked at his brand, it was glowing a neutral khaki shade, much like his uniform before he grit his teeth. “Son of a-“ a burst of pain and stinging him, worse than any battle acquired injury, he sunk to his own knee and looked over at Qun’mi, rage still filling his own expressions.

“If you want to lay down and die from this then so be it, but I won’t stop until I get rid of this god damned brand.” A summoning glyph appeared below him, that same shade of khaki that his brand had been glowing. Still clutching his arm, his gaze moved from the other blond to the glyph, moving out of the way as a summon he had no recollection of ever seeing before appeared. It have a feminine form, six arms and a sword in each hand, but what really got his attention was the body of a snake. What…the hell? The pain from his brand became dull, and his attention was mostly on the summon as he felt his sword summon into his hand, stepping back from the eidolon as it hissed, just like a snake would. “What…even…” he spoke in almost a breath of disbelief.

To say she was angry was an understatement.

Qun’mi was furious. She had been woken up and dragged out here for what?! Oh, she was angry alright. So much so, that she completely ignored his higher rank and grabbed him by the shirt collar. Though she normally was a bit brazen in her actions, she had never once done anything quite like this before. She did have respect for those that she knew were higher ranking then she was. There had always been a level of professionalism between her and others, even if there was subtle (LOL subtle…) flirting on her part. Now, however, she was too angry to pay that any mind. Instead, she was standing here, dragging him down to her level to get her face all up in his grill to tell him just how pissed off she was at him. Yup, this was the start to a wonderful day all right. How much better could one day get? As far as she was concerned, she was ready to dump him off the side of the cliff and happily wave as he fell. Damn it, this was a mess, and she wasn’t happy about it either.

Shoving him away from her, Qun’mi took deep breathes to try to calm herself down. It might have worked, but unfortunately for him, he started in on a rant. “You sure treat it like a God damn game!”, she spit back, glaring at him while trying to get herself calmed down. That wasn’t working out so well for her at all. And it continued to not help when he continued on. “Well that’s just fine and dandy!”, she yelled back, before he said the one thing that really sent her over the edge. He was not going to call her lazy! Damn him! He might work hard, but she did too. Any sleep she got was a miracle in itself, and the way Cid had been running her (and him, but she was too angry to admit that) ragged had pushed her to the point of basically not giving a crap about anything. Instead, once again she reacted quickly, reaching out a hand and slapping him as hard as she could. Another thing she wouldn’t normally do (at least not on the upper cheeks) to a superior soldier. Hell, she knew enough to know that it wasn’t a good idea to strike at Qator Bashtar. She might be a high ranking elite, but he was ranked definitely higher than her.

The next moment the pain had taken her to one knee, clutching at her calf with a hand, gritting her teeth as she went from glaring at him through her glazed over eyes to staring down at the ground, eyes narrowed to merely a slit. His words cut at her, so much so that she almost found the strength to get back up and give him hell for it again. “You shut the hell up Bashtar,” she bit out, her grip on her calf becoming tighter. The pain had taken her breath away, and left her to crouch there, eyes glazed to the pain that was coming from her brand. Again he started to talk. Heaving a few deep breathes, she lifted her head, “I said shut the hell up Bashtar!” She didn’t really care that he was higher ranking right now. All she knew was that she was in pain, had been dealing with plenty herself in the last however long, and was pretty much sick of all of this crap!

As his summon came, so did hers. Hearing a growl, Qun’mi blinked and lifted her head to see a huge wolf like creature standing some ways a way, circling around her like a hunter would its prey. Did that mean that she was its prey? Had it…had it come from her? Instantly it felt like her brand wasn’t causing her so much pain. After a few deep breathes, she stood up slowly, keeping her eyes on the wolf like creature. Somehow, it seemed like she should be connected to this beast…somehow. And it was only then that she noticed the second creature. “What…” she started, staring from one to the other, “The hell?!”, she finally burst out in frustration. Without thinking her daggers appeared in her hands. Still staring between one and the other, she final rested her gaze on the wolf like creature. “Have fun with that bitch,” she finally spoke to her blonde companion, before shifting to follow the motion of the beast that was still trying to circle her. “You want some?”, she finally taunted, her eyes glaring at him.

This was no time to be fooling around, and Qun’mi was going to throw a hissy fit over this? At least Qator was moving all the time and searching nonstop with Cid Aulstyne breathing down his neck about Rubrum and domination over this that and the other thing. It was definitely weighing down on the General’s shoulders, and Qun’mi’s behavior was only adding to the angst that was boiling just under the surface of his skin. It was a wonder he hadn’t exploded on Qun’mi, but his harsher sounding and completely emotionless words were definitely going to be enough to get her even more riled up, he knew that and didn’t care for the consequences. He was still her superior, there was no mistaking that, and she knew it as clear as day. No matter how much lip and attitude she gave him, at the end of the day, he was still in a higher position than she, he was basically the second highest ranked in all of Byakko, Cid Aulsyne being number one, simply giving the orders…Qator though, he took those orders and molded them, enforcing them like any leader.

“I treat it like a game? You’re kidding me, right? I’ve spent countless days researching this AND dealing with Cid on my back about the portals and our encounters with Rubrum, you think I’m happy about this? You think I’m glad to be getting little to no sleep every night? We all have our problems, yet you continue to bitch and moan about it like a small child.” He sneered, his anger showing a bit more this time, especially when he called her lazy. All she wanted to do was sleep, and hell, he did too after all the work he was putting forth especially lately, that didn’t matter though, while she was snoozing every now and then, Qator was still working nonstop. It just frustrated him to no end that she’d be so bitchy after he tried to at least find a way to help with the brands, it had been a lost cause…but he hadn’t completely failed…he’d at least spotted a portal with some pieces to something familiar by it, it wasn’t a total loss, she should at least be thankful that he was even trying to help her instead of saving his own skin and leaving her to die.

The words he spoke certainly got a kick out of Qun’mi…more like a slap. Feeling the smack across his face, Qator’s head jerked to the side as he grit his teeth and scowled a bit. He remained in that stance for a moment, feeling an inner rage just start to explode like a volcano from within. Turning his head and putting his gaze back on her, his face obviously not amused and just as angry as hers, his lips still creating a scowl, he never really got this angry unless things were going wrong in war, or because there was an issue with respect towards the leading general of the Milites Army. Cid may have been the leader of Byakko right now, but this was Qator’s army, he was the one leading it right now, and everyone seemed to have that burned into their brains…except one particular woman who figured it would be wise to physically threaten her superior. “I’ve let you slide by with many things Qun’mi, your attitude for one…just because you’re a good fighter doesn’t mean I don’t have the right to boot your sorry ass from my military. You obviously need some refreshers as to who’s in charge. You do that again, and I’ll have you discharged from the military immediately. Dishonorable discharge.”

Pain, that was all Qator could recall feeling before the glyph showed up, and as quickly as that piece had appeared, out came a green creature with flaming red hair and six arms, a feminine face and body…but the legs and the skin was all that of a snake. Qator tried to believe that he was dead or dreaming, but this was reality. He flickered his gaze from the summon in front of him to the wolf like creature that was targeting Qun’mi. Smirking a bit, though not amused whatsoever, Qator put his gaze back on the snake, Marilith, and felt his sword appear in his hand, he didn’t see the need for his pistol just yet, this was…not looking too good, but he was a military leader, he needed to be able to survive a six armed giant cobra…that didn’t sound difficult now did it? Okay it did. Watching the tail of Marilith move around slowly and carefully, Qator shifted his weight and moved as it tried to strike towards him, actually hitting the ground and somewhat rolling away from the tail attack, moving to go and take a nice slice at the tail that had just tried to hit him. The only thing he really knew about snakes was that to kill them…you had to cut off the head.

Striking his sword down, Marilith’s tail had moved quick enough so that his sword only punctured the ground, pretty deep as well seeing as much force as he had put in. Tugging by the hilt, he finally jerked his blade from the ground but felt the tail of this creature wrap around him like some sort of boa constrictor, knocking his sword from his hand. Moving himself around to try and slip out of the grasp, Qator found himself stuck as the summon came closer towards him, taking one of her six hands and grabbing at his chin, hissing as well. “Sssssuch a ssssshame.” She mumbled with a hiss. With a quick movement, and her face being so close, Qator summoned his pistol and shot the summons square in the face, not causing enough for a death on such a being, but enough for her to jerk back and wail with another snake like hiss and enough for him to get free from being choked to death from the waist down. “Yeah, a damn shame.” He said retrieving his sword and sticking it into the summon’s tail and twisting it.

Well, this wasn’t that hard now was it?

Qun’mi was in too much pain to deal with this shit. Gritting her teeth, she glared daggers at Qator as he ranted to her about how it was her acting like a child. She was acting like a child?! He was the superior soldier, shouting to her about this whole situation that he had gotten them into! She was seething with anger, and just about up to her neck in anger toward the damned blonde. Hell, she didn’t care about the pain any longer. Oh no, this was personal. He’d called her a whining baby, but"What the hell are you if I’m a whining brat?!”, she shouted back, unable to deal with his rant any longer without retaliating and lashing back out at him. The burning was working its way up from her leg and spreading all through her body. It felt like her insides were on fire, and a glazed look had started over her blue eyes because of the pain.

She got so angry that she did lash out then. Getting back to her feet, she put all her strength into slapping him as hard as she could possibly muster. Damn if it didn’t feel good too. She got instant satisfaction of seeing his head snap to the side, before grasping at her calf again, crouched down toward the ground. Hell, what was happening here?! Why was her brand burning her? Why was the heat spreading to her entire body? She wasn’t sure, and she didn’t know exactly what to do to stop it either, or even if there was anything to do to stop it. She wished there was, because she was burning up from the inside out.

And then he started in on another rant, his voice deadly. Unfortunately, Qun’mi was so mad and in pain that she didn’t give a damn what he said and ignored all the warning signs that he was mad enough to chew up nails and spit them back out all over her. Her harsh laughter brazenly rolled out from her lips at the mention of a dishonorable discharge, which only increased as the pain seemed to addle her brain. “You think I honestly care about your damned army? So freaking what! Discharge me!”, she shouted at him as the pain got to be worse and worse. Finally, she grit her teeth and stopped laughing. “So take your damned position in the army and shove it up your ass,” she commented, head bowed slightly. “Like you can do with absolutely everything else for all I care!”, she finished yelling, pain causing her voice to change slightly.

And then they came. Qun’mi nearly collapsed as the pain started to recede. But that didn’t last for long. Her nervous system started to drain of the adrenaline that she’d had moments before, slackening to match the current situation. Hell, she was glad she just had a damned big wolf to take care of instead of the whatever the hell it was that Qator was dealing with. Ignoring him completely after that, she started to circle the wolf as it did the same with her, looking for weaknesses that the other might have. Drawing out her daggers, Qun’mi waited for it to charge her. “Come here fuzzy,” she mocked, bouncing on her heels as she waited for it to get close enough to attack. And it did just that. Snarling at her, it snapped and lunged, but she whirled to the side, her magic reacting as she controlled it. She flipped the wolf in the air and watched it land a few feet away from her, still snarling. It got up quickly, snarling as it came toward her again. This time it adapted its attack, changing in midair to catch her with a paw and throw her to the ground, instantly on top of her to try and rip her throat out. Twisting, Qun’mi jabbed the blunt side of her dagger to stave off the teeth and slashed at its chest with her second dagger. It yelped slightly and she managed to get a foot underneath its belly, grunting as she kicked it off, aided by her magitek armor in doing so. They were both somewhat slower to get up from that attack.

Arguing with Qun’mi was like battling with a small child. She simply wasn’t worth the time anymore, and he’d gladly make that announcement, even if it’d piss her off even more. He wanted her to know he was just as pissed off as she was. At least he wasn’t whining about how tired he was, the lack of sleep he had as well as she…at least he cared about his future with this damn brand on his arm. A look of pure rage was just on his face as he turned and didn’t want to face the mouthy blonde anymore, she really was biting off more than she could chew, at least in Qator’s eyes she was. He’d finally spat out the threat to discharge her from the military. If she wanted any sort of job…she’d shut that god damned mouth of hers. Qator had a huge pull in the Empire, if he didn’t want anyone hiring her…it would be done. She was just too worried about herself and worried about getting that beauty rest to realize what good he was trying to do for her. Whatever, she could lay down and die due to the brand for all he cared.

With the summons appearing, Qator paid no mind to Qun’mi anymore. She could handle herself, or get eaten by that wolf creature, whatever suited her best. He was focusing on the extremely dangerous and very deadly looking snake-lady that was ready to constrict or stab him with one of those six blades she held. It was a challenge, Qator could already tell. This was going to be no cake walk, which was kept him moving. He had gotten caught in the grip of the summon, almost being strangled, but luckily the tail of Marilith had only gotten around his waist, not towards his lungs where she could’ve easily taken the life of him. Having escaped that one, he’d plunged his sword into her tail, twisting the blade around and hearing a hiss and a wail from Marilith as his blade had dug deep into the ground through her tail, making her tail stuck there for awhile.

Feeing the blunt end of a blade swat him away, Qator hit the ground and lost his sword in the process…it was still stuck in the summon’s tail, keeping her to the ground as he rolled quickly to his feet, jumping into military soldier mode and having his pistol in hand. Aiming at Marilith’s face, he shot a few times, hearing his bullets ricochet off the blades as she swung them, flinging one towards him, Qator ducked down and watched one sword put itself into the ground. She was turning these blades into throwing knives. Qator smirked as he retrieved the blade very nonchalantly, twirling it once before flinging it right back at her, charging and going for his own sword that was still impaled into the summon’s tail. “Better work on your aim.” He grumbled as he leaped and pulled his sword with him, rolling on the ground and striking more at the body of Marilith, causing another wail before she just…dropped down on him. Swords disappearing from her hands as she took his arms and pushed him down flat against the ground, a rattle-snake hiss coming from her teeth. Man….this was no friendly summon!

Gritting his teeth, Qator didn’t have the ability to move from here, he was pinned, a tail wrapping around him towards his chest, leaving his arms from his elbows down free, staring into the face of a snake practically. Shifting his wrist though, since it was just his shoulders really being pinned down, he struck his blade into the abdomen of Marlith. She’d gotten a blank look across her face, feeling a bit of twitching from her hands…she’d released his shoulders and looked down where he’d gotten her. The grip around him was loosening slightly, but the brigadier general felt himself growing light headed. Marilith gave one final wail before having faded away and transforming into a hardened crystal that floated towards Qator’s hand as he was left to breathe, finally. His sword hitting the ground with a slight bounce as he laid on the ground, holding the crystal and lifting it up for a moment, hitting the sun spot on. His brand stung a little bit more…but he was simply left more confused. Inside though…the will to go on and fight that damned brand…it was stronger than ever. If he could face a six armed snake lady and live to tell the tale…he could figure out this brand.

With that in mind…he turned to the side a bit, still recovering from his near strangulation, and let his gaze search for that mouthy soldier girl…hoping somewhere deep down that she was coping.

Shit!

Wrestling with some two ton puppy had not been on the agenda today, that was for sure. Breaking away from old toothy wanting to eat her, Qun’mi got to her feet slower, studying the wolf that was staring back at her. If she didn’t know any better, Qun’mi would say that the dog was toying with her. Well hell, she didn’t like that idea. Furrowing her brow, she brandished her daggers and bounced lightly on the balls of her feet. Well this little mongrel could just bring it on! And he did. With a growl, the dog attacked her once again. Moving to the side in the nick of time, Qun’mi flipped on her hands and twisted through the air. With her arms wrapped around the neck of the hairy beast, she clasped her strong limbs around and using her momentum, flipped it over and down to the ground. It landed solidly, while her hands reached for it one more time. With a grunt, Qun’mi’s magic activated and she tossed the wolf in the air one more time. Jumping after it, Qun’mi hurled it back to the ground, landing lightly on her feet beside it. “Damn I’m good,” she muttered out with a smirk.

Before she could even make heads or tails about what was happening, the wolf had gotten her leg in its teeth. With a startled gasp, Qun’mi was flipped down and onto her back, the wolf snarling as it gnawed at her leg. Thankfully her boots went practically up to her calf and she had a bit of protection. As it snarled, it threw its head from side to side as if to rip her to shreds. “Damn you!”, she burst out, kicking at its nose with her free foot. Snapping its neck back and getting to its feet, Qun’mi felt herself flying through the air to land heavily on the ground, dazed. “Ugh…”, she groaned, before it was back, trying to rip her to shreds again. Gaining her daggers again, Qun’mi rolled over and stabbed at it. Even being a trained soldier, she was almost powerless to stop it, and it grabbed at her dagger with its teeth. Blinking, Qun’mi stared at the creature that was literally holding her dagger in its mouth as if to say “Bring your worst lady.”

The shriek of the woman summon that Qator had been dealing with, Qun’mi flipped her head around to look at him. The moment she saw what predicament he was in, her own situation didn’t feel so bad. No matter what they had been screaming about, Qun’mi definitely didn’t want him to kick the bucket like she had said. Damn, but it would be lively without him. They couldn’t have that! Turning her head back to the beast that was shaking her like a rag doll, she twisted until her bottom half was underneath her. Her leg hurt, but she ignored it while she threw her weight directly at the beast, slashing at its face with her second dagger as she did so. Almost instantly it yelped and stumbled back in retreat.

Charging herself, Qun’mi’s magic activated as she jumped at it, twisting and slamming her fist down into its nose, the magic coursing through the body of the wolf, causing it to yelp again in pain. She didn’t stop the assault, but continued as she became a flurry of movement. A fist here, a knee there, a dagger slash there, until she had the beast on the ground, a dagger pressed against its throat, panting heavily. It lay still and for a moment they stared at each other, before she felt as if it were saying ‘Well done, you’ve earned me.’ When the thing started to glow, she got off and retreated a few steps, continuing to pant heavily as the wolf got to its feet. For another moment it seemed to gather itself, before it slowly began to transform before her eyes, becoming some sort of motorcycle looking thing, and then disappearing once more, turning into a crystal that fell into her hand. Staring at it a moment, Qun’mi shook her head in disbelief and slipped the thing into her pocket. Turning her head to find her companion, she was suddenly exhausted and her leg didn’t seem to want to support her. Slowly she crumpled until she was sitting on the ground. Pulling up her shredded pant leg, Qun’mi noticed her boot was also in shreds, some of her skin torn open. It didn’t look life threatening, but hell, that thing had TEETH! It was then that she noticed blood trickling down her arm. Blinking, Qun’mi calmly tore off some of the material on her pant leg and proceeded to start dabbing at the row of teeth marks on her arm. “You alright Blondie? Or did that bitch man handle you?”

Qator hadn’t fought something like this for a long time. It hadn’t been easy, and lord knows there were a few close calls, but at least…now it was all done and over with. With some deep breaths, Qator laid himself against the ground after the summon had disappeared into a crystal form, a form he knew well…the various signs and formations of the Byakko flag. With his eyes closed, he tried to remain calm, hearing some sounds in the background from Qun’mi and her battle, but that soon ended and turned to silence. Opening his eyes and taking a small gander towards Qun’mi, he’d noticed that she’d survived, defeated the summon just as he had. Kind of odd, but Qator figured they had something to do with their brands…it was too big of a coincidence to not relate them to the brands. That was…one step into the right direction?

Whatever this had to do with their brands, Qator would figure it out. He was a determined individual, but maybe Qun’mi had the right idea. After that battle, it simply reminded Qator how tired he was, god only knows how tired she was as well. After today…it would be wise to take a break. Qator wanted nothing more right now then to go home and sleep it off. Battling a giant snake-lady sure kicked his tiredness up a few notches. Once he figured out Qun’mi’s status on her injuries or lack of, whatever, then they could get home and hopefully not argue or slap faces along the way.

Sighing heavily, Qator grunted slightly as he lifted himself up to a sitting position, rubbing a hand against his head as he heard Qun’mi’s voice break through the silence that had surrounded them for a brief moment. “I’m still alive, aren’t I?” he commented at first, not wanting to really flare up another argument with her, it seemed that their argument was what had brought upon those summons as it was. “I’m fine, and…” he’d noticed the wear and tear upon her clothes, and of course the tears through her skin. Damn him for caring…only slightly. She was a part of his team…and they were in this whole l’cie thing together. Damn it. Shifting up to his feet with little ease – mostly because he’d nearly been strangled to death – and that certainly didn’t make it easy. Once he got to his feet, he moved over towards Qun’mi before dropping himself to the ground and looked at her arm for a second as she dabbed that cloth against it.

“Got a nice chunk out of you.” Qator observed before gently taking her arm and looking at her wounds with a better gaze whether she liked it or not. With a deep sigh escaping his chest, still recovering from his lack of air, Qator shrugged his shoulders before taking the cloth from her hand, tying it around her wound and giving it a nice tight knot, not enough to turn into a tourniquet, but enough to stop the bleeding for a few moments. As much as she’d love to admit that Qator was a stick in the mud or had a stick up his ass…he was being somewhat mature wasn’t he? With narrowed eyes looking at his handy work on her arm, Qator finally moved his gaze to look at Qun’mi square in the face. “Sorry.” He commented in a low tone, not wanting to apologize really, but whatever cleared the air…he’d try right? It was the mature thing to do and hopefully she wouldn’t fire up an attitude after this. “I think…we should probably get back to the base, get some rest…and…take the rest of the day off.” He suggested, still sitting there, waiting…waiting for her reaction.

Well she was glad that was over. Glancing down at her leg, with her pant leg slightly shredded and a little bloody while she dabbed at the wound on her arm, Qun'mi wondered again at just what the hell the two things had been. Just why had they come popping out of their brands? And why bad they returned to a crystal? Had her and Qator beaten them? Or...non of this made sense. Qun'mi was too old for this crap, way too old. Maybe her and Qator could figure it out if they just sat down and talked about it. If she still had a position in the army. Well hell, it was the only thing Qun'mi knew, having grown up an army brat, but did he even have the authority to discharge her? It wasn't ego speaking when she said that she was a valuable part of the team. Hell, not just valuable, but one of the best, and she knew it. But if that was how it was going to go, she still stuck to her last resolve. That she didn't really give a damn if they discharged her. She could find stuff to do, so whatever. Bring it on!

Speaking of which, where even was that snippy general of theirs? Asking him if he was okay, she got the response she had figured she would. That he was still alive so that should be enough of an answer. She didn't say much, but nodded and returned to her task of dabbing at her wound. The blood wasn't gushing, but it sure wasn't just seeping either. She wasn't thinking much more aside from the present though, so when Qator dropped down beside her, she somewhat figured he was going to start yelling again. Well if he did, then bring it on damn it! She would return in equal measure.

No one was more surprised than her when he took her makeshift rag and started to do what she had been doing. Having been geared and ready for a fight, most of the bluster went out of her and she just sat while he started to fix her up. He was even being gentle with her arm, trying not to be harsh with it. His comment about it having gotten her caused a one shoulder shrug, as if playing it off as nothing. "He had some mighty big chompers.", she commented, "But it looks worse than it is." Well that wasn't entirely true, it stung like hell, but he was the last person she would admit that to at he moment, what with him saying she did nothing but complain like a baby. With her arm now fixed up, she nodded, "Thanks Qator," she said sincerely, even calling him by his name instead of one of her various nicknames.

His apology caught her by surprise yet again. Blinking, she furrowed her brow for a minute, giving him a look of slight disbelief. Instead of comment on that, she gave him another shrug. "I am too." Spontaneously leaning forward, she caught him by the back of his head and pulled him toward her to kiss him. Hell, she'd wanted to do that for quite awhile now. A few seconds later she shoved him away and gave him a mischievous grin. "Because we could have been doing this, instead of that," she cheerfully spoke out, waving her hand around her to indicate she meant the battles. She did appreciate that he was attempting to make peace, hell, it must have killed him a little inside to apologize to her. Patting at his cheek when he told her they should take the rest of the day off, she smiled up at him again. "You're not so much of an ass after all," she said teasingly, before moving around her leg until she had drawn it closer to herself, eyes checking out the wound there. "Does this mean I'm still a Master Sergent in the Milite army?"
