Rinoa studied herself in the mirror for a last time – her dark, chocolate brown hair was tied loosely in a bun, a few silver clips keeping it together; the royal blue of her halter neck cocktail dress displayed perfectly against her creamy white skin and the silver strappy-high heels was a lovely finish to her outfit. She nervously fiddled with the only piece of jewelry she wore – two rings on a single, silver necklace-chain.
This will have to do… she thought, gently biting down on her lower lip. Leaning closer to the mirror, she checked her make-up and reapplied some mascara. Then she twirled around once more - an excited, though slightly nervous giggle escaping her rosy lips.
Her deep, brown eyes peered out of the small room’s window. A warm, summer’s night breeze was blowing in, bringing with it the smell of the ocean and the sounds of Belamb. Zell’s room sure has a lovely view. I wonder how Selphie is doing. Rinoa chuckled and rested her slender hands on the window sill. I’m sure she is bouncing around with excitement, making it very hard for Quistis to lace up the girl’s dress.
Rinoa shook her head, a smile gracing her lips. Tonight is Selphie and Irvine’s engagement party… I can hardly believe it. A tiny pang of jealously pinched her heart, but she pushed it aside. Her happiness for her friends was sincere; she’d just thought that by this time, she’d be the one getting married.
All Sephie and Irvine’s friends and family was in Belamb – gathered together to celebrate the engagement. The family was staying as the Belamb Hotel, where the party would be held, while the couple’s friends had arranged lodgings throughout the town. Zell had invited Rinoa, Squall and Quistis to stay at his house for weekend, while they all celebrated the happy news.
A knock on the door plucked Rinoa’s thoughts out of her reverie. Zell stepped into the room – he was dressed in a exquisite black suit with a red tie; there was one of his usual bright smiles on his face. Rinoa’s eyebrows arched in surprise. “Wow, Zell – if it wasn’t for that tattoo I would never have recognized you,” she laughed, and gave her friend a quick hug.
“Thanks Rinoa – Squall isn’t going to be able to keep his eyes off you,” Zell said with a grin.
A soft red blush crept across Rinoa’s cheeks and she playfully swatted him across the arm. “Where is he? Still with Irvine?”
“Yeah, he called to say he’ll meet us at the Hotel. Apparently poor Irvine is a little… jittery. You know how he gets,” he replied rather quickly, making Rinoa arch an eyebrow at him suspiciously.
“Are you ready?” he asked before she could say anything else and held his arm out towards her.
Rinoa nodded. “Let’s go,” she replied excitedly, hooking her arm through his.
They made their way to the Hotel, all the while Rinoa was talking Zell’s ear off. She was very excited about the party, but nervous about seeing Squall. Even though they’ve been together for a long time, she still felt butterflies in her stomach when she thought about him.
Her on-going chatter suddenly came to a stop when she saw her lover standing on the steps of the Hotel. He looked magnificent in the suit he was wearing. His white shirt underneath went without a tie - the top two buttons left loosely open. A gorgeous smile quirked his lips as he saw her. Rinoa felt her heart leap in her chest, and she quickly made her way up the steps, jumping into his arms.
Zell grinned and disappeared into the building, leaving the two lovebirds on the steps.
“Hey,” Squall whispered in her ear, as he folded his arms around her. “You look beautiful.”
Rinoa rested her palms against his chest, feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat. A loving smile spread across her rosy lips.
“And you’re the most handsome guy I’ve ever seen,” she brought her lips to his in a fiery, though tender kiss.
“Don’t you want to go in?” he asked after a few moments, somewhat breathless.
“Just a little longer,” she whispered, and folded her slender arms around his waist.
They remained outside for a few minutes, wrapped in each other arms, watching the night sky. It was a beautiful summer’s night – the sky was a deep, dark blue and the stars shone like diamonds.
“Rinoa?” Squall said softly, tipping her chin up so that their eyes could meet.
“Yes, Squall?” her heart beat faster at the smoldering look in his eyes.
“Will you marry me?” he asked, and bent down on one knee, taking a little box from his suit’s pocket.
Rinoa blinked in shock, and took a step back. Her heart felt like it would burst out of her chest and a bright smile spread across her face.
Squall clicked the box open, to reveal a beautiful silver ring, mounted with a single gorgeous diamond.
“Seeing Irvine and Selphie so happy together, made me realize that life is short. And I almost lost you once. I never want to loose you again,” his eyes were fixed upon hers, as though he was trying to look into her heart.
“I love you, Rinoa Heartilly. Will you marry me?”
Rinoa felt her knees go weak. “Squall,” she said, happy-tears forming in her eyes. She had dreamed of this moment for ages.
“But… what about Selphie and Irvine? It’s their night…” she said, almost reluctantly - but she didn’t want to take away their special moment.
“Why do you think I spent so much time with Irvine tonight? I had to ask the guy’s permission first. They all know. Even Zell,” he chuckled and smiled up at her.
“What! But, when-“ Rinoa laughed, remembering how quickly Zell had replied when she had asked where Squall was. She clasped her hands across her heart and looked down at the man she loved more than anything. “Yes, yes I will marry you Squall,” a joyous laugh escaped her lips. “I love you so much,”
Squall straightened, and removed the ring from the box, slipping it over her slender finger. “My lady Leonhart,” he said before he drew her into his arms, and kissed her passionately.
