His brand hurt. Only in his head, but it gnawed at him. Kuja twisted his torso and pulled back his cape so he could see it properly and traced it with his long, delicate fingers. That hideous beast had defiled him. Tattooed his ownership on Kuja's very skin. This was... the l'cie curse? Kuja had nothing to go on but the fal'cie words that rang in his ears still. If he did not complete his focus then he would suffer a fate worse than death. Kuja could have laughed. A month ago he would not have believed there could be anything worse than death, that would be impossible, because death was a wall, unmovable and immutable. Death was worth destroying the world over. A fate worse than death... he could not imagine such a thing. He had never seen one of these cie'th that Barthandelus had talked about. He didn't want to see one.
His focus... he wasn't sure what he had seen... No that was a lie, he knew what it was alright. The focus of l’cie could be confusing and vague, but Kuja had seen his very clearly. Gaia was to be destroyed. He was to destroy Gaia? How ironic, that when he had finally decided to stop the destruction, new forces came into play to see it continue. Was he never to be free? Garland and Chaos and Barthandelus, there was no difference, they all wanted to use him towards their own ends as their pawn. Well no more! He had failed Chaos, he had defied Garland, and he was jot going to submit to Barthandelus' will. He would be nobody's slave! But this brand... how could he get rid of it? It depressed him to know it was there. Even though physically he felt stronger than ever before, he felt weak in spirit. It was so crushing to be marked like this, a dark blemish on his beautiful soft white skin.
L'cie had powers apparently. Perhaps he could fight? Barthandelus was strong, but maybe Kuja could become stronger. He had destroyed Terra with the power of his trance. He could destroy Barthadelus! Not to mention the power of the l'cie added to his pre-existing Mage powers... How could he lose? If his focus was absolute then killing Barthandelus would not change Kuja's fate as a l'cie, but he had defied fate before too. He had lived when Garland had pronounced he must die. He had returned when Chaos wanted him to fade. He would not turn into a cie'th. If crystal sleep was his only reward then so be it. He would welcome that form of death as he had accepted true death back at the Iifa Tree. But he would not bow down to anyone anymore.
Where was he?
Kuja had assumed that the portal would take him back to Gaia, but instead it had taken him to a different world, somewhere new. He had flown all over Gaia on his Silver Dragon and this, again, was like nothing he had seen there. To be honest, being on a different world really didn't surprise him much anymore. This was his fourth planet in half a year. He had already known about the existence of other planets from Garland, but the richness and diversity of them did surprise him still. Wherever he was he was clearly in some sort of forest, a really big ancient one from the looks of it. It has that sort of green tint to the light that indicated the amount of leaves the sunlight was filtering through and the trees stretched in all directions as far as he could see. Was there anybody else here? “Hello?” he didn’t shout, he didn’t even say it very loudly. Kuja was not sure he really wanted to be found. But on the other hand, if he didn’t get out of here then he could not kill Barthandelus and he didn’t have his trusty silver dragon to carry him away. So he had better find his way out of here. Hopefully there was somebody around, Kuja knew that when lost in a forest you were more than likely to end up walking in circles. If some peasant knew the way out or the way to a trail to lead him to civilization then that would be fine. Oh to just be back in Treno right now with no brands and no worries... Well, he’d done it again. After wandering around aimlessly and getting lost seven times in about four days time, he’d managed to once again take a wrong turn somewhere. No, that wasn’t exactly true… this situation was different from the last where he’d simply not paid attention and just walked wherever his feet took him, and this situation was even more embarrassing than the last five… this time, a goddamn bird had lead to him being lost once again. He knew that chocobo breeder looked shady, and apparently, his gut had been right, of course, it was too little too late now. After renting one of the birds in hopes of reducing his travel time, the bird had simply walked wherever the hell it pleased, no matter how hard Kadaj shouted at it and threatened to skin it alive if it didn’t stop. That bird was tough and had huge balls for not being intimidated, Kadaj had to give him that. If their roles had been reversed, he might’ve cried a little at some of the threats he’d been spouting as the chocobo just happily kept running, occasionally making some taunting “kweh” sound as it went. After a while, Kadaj had just accepted his fate as the chocobo’s bitch and allowed it to go wherever it wanted to go. He assumed it would tire eventually, or stop to have a drink, at which point Kadaj would hop off and try to find civilization again. But the chocobo was tough as steel, and didn’t stop once. Kadaj had worried that the chocobo was going to keep running for so long that Kadaj would starve to death. Thankfully, or perhaps not so thankfully, considering the mess he was in now, the bird had other plans.
He honestly hadn’t even noticed anything strange until it was too late. The chocobo ran up a few mountains, ran through a few forests… running through yet another forest seemed more than logical, even if it did seem older than most forests Kadaj had seen. What did he know of forests anyway? He wasn’t some freaking tree-hugger or something. A tree was a tree, yet another thing he cared very little about. Anyway, at some point, and Kadaj still wasn’t sure how it had happened exactly, he’d suddenly found himself in mid-air, having been launched off the chocobo’s back. He’d been so grateful to be on steady ground that he hadn’t even thought to hurry back over to the chocobo to retrieve his stuff from the bags on the oversized chicken’s back. And so, the big feathery bastard had managed to run off back to his scamming master with all the valuables Kadaj possessed, leaving him behind in some weird old forest in the middle of nowhere. With closed eyes, he leaned back against one of the trees. He still couldn’t believe his misfortune. Why in the hell hadn’t he noticed something wrong with the breeder before climbing onto his evil partner in crime’s back? He supposed there was nothing to do but find his way out of this forest and kill them both in the most brutal way he could think of. A sadistic smirk flashed briefly on his face as he began to wander, looking for a way out of here. How big could this place be anyway? He’d likely find a village or whatever if he just kept walking. And while he was walking, he could think up all the horrible torture methods he’d use on the ones who had shamed him this badly.
After wandering around for what seemed like ages, Kadaj’s smirk had been replaced by a scowl bad enough to make babies cry. Everything looked the same to him, flies were getting stuck in his hair, he’d slipped on a frog or two and landed in a pool of murky water as a result of it, which was pretty horrible considering how constricting his costume was when it was dry, let alone when it was wet. Honestly, Kadaj wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry at his predicament. This was all just so weird and ridiculous that it almost seemed funny to him. Paying money to ride a bird, having the bird kidnap you and drop you in a far-off forest and stealing your stuff, and now this… When he tripped again, this time over a branch, Kadaj burst out in a fit of chuckles. These weren’t pleasant chuckles though… these were ‘oh crap stay away from the madman’ chuckles. As he struggled to get back on his feet, he reached for the one thing the chocobo hadn’t managed to steal from him; his trusty blade. “When I find you…” he hissed at no one in particular as he rose his blade and began to slice at a few trees, “I will turn you into a lovely bowl of chicken soup!” Apparently, he got a little overeager. The slashes in the trees grew larger and larger as he raged on, and eventually, they just sort of… tipped over, and Kadaj actually had to jump aside to dodge a few of the trees as they nearly landed on him. What a fantastic planet… he couldn’t possibly imagine why people would prefer death over this lovely little paradise called Gaia.

Kuja wandered for a while, alone in the god forsaken forest. There little rises in the land that made passes in some directions impossible and one or two little narrow ravines spotted about the forest floor just to make things interesting. Kuja might be able to glide through the air - to a certain extent - but flying upwards out of a ravine was quite another thing. As he came to quite a thick section of undergrowth, a chocobo came bursting out of nowhere and just about ran him over. He had to dive out the way in an ungainly manner, rolling over on the ground and coughing out a spray of dirt that the chocobo had kicked up as it ran. Irate, Kuja shot a fire spell at the bird, but it dodged and ran on. The fire spell hit a tree which luckily was too damp to ignite. Great one there, almost starting a forest fire. That would have ended well for you. He felt grubby now after rolling on the ground like that, but in truth he was not even dirty. He picked a leaf out of his hair and shredded it furiously. “If I see that chocobo again I’ll burn him alive,” he threatened to blank air, then continued on his way, stomping and feeling a whole lot more irritable than before.
It just seemed never ending. Was he just walking in circles? That tree looked familiar. Of course it looks familiar, it's a tree, they all look the same! he scolded himself, getting more frustrated with his predicament. He couldn't turn his anger in at himself though, or out at the forest which he felt unable to rationally blame for simply existing. Instead the target in his mind was the fal'cie that had put him here. Oh what he would do to that thing; maybe he'd get a knife and tie him down and cut his grievances out of the old man's flesh one at a time. That sounded like some excellent revenge right there. Maybe when he was done he would leave him there alive to die in his own time. Kuja did his darkest sounding laugh. He's see that fal'cie dead one way or the other. These thoughts cheered him up immensely and his forms of torture became more involved as he kept on walking.
He had gone slightly further when the sound of more laughter reached his ears. Not nice laughter, evil laughter. Kuja thought he probably preferred this kind. What, had everybody come out to the woods today to plot and try out their evil villain laugh? The sound was shortly accompanied by the dull thud of metal hitting wood and the creaking of trees. Kuja inched around a tree and into the view of another silver-haired man in a tight black jumpsuit. Still not as pretty as Kuja. His anger was obvious as he hacked chunks of wood out of the surrounding trees. Kuja leant nonchalantly against a tree slightly further back and observed in amusement. He wasn't sure the other man had even seen him. As he watched the strikes got even more violent until the trees began to fall. "Are you quite done?" Kuja asked, beginning to grow bored of this tantrum, whatever it was about did not matter so much as him getting home. Whoever this weird guy was, he could help him out; unless this rage had been caused by his inability to find a way out, which, as Kuja thought about it, sad a more than likely.
Stepping fully out into the clearing and gracefully walking along the trunk of a fallen tree, Kuja walked towards the man and stopped when he was still a short distance away. While a light smile he looked down on the man, both physically from his higher standing point and metaphorically, "So as wonderfully constructive as this was, is there any chance you may like to stop decimating the forest and help me? Unless you are also lost." He really hoped that this stranger really did know the way out, although that seemed increasingly unlikely. Kuja wondered what he should do if they were both lost. Continue alone? That was his first response but perhaps he ought to try and... work together? Kuja didn't like working with others, other people were often stupid and lazy and ugly, but he had seen that teamwork could produce results, so perhaps it was something he ought to try just once. Kadaj lay on the ground for a few seconds, just trying to catch his breath and his calm when he heard a voice speak to him. Jerking his head up in surprise, he glared at whoever had addressed him, though the glare didn’t stay on his face long when he noticed what the guy was wearing. Instead, he tilted his head ever so slightly to the side, his expression betraying his surprise. What in the world… was that… was that a thong?! What moron walked around in a thong? You had to be really mentally disturbed to make that seem like a good… Kadaj’s thought process stopped for a moment when he looked down at his chest. He supposed his own clothing wasn’t exactly commonplace either, but at least he didn’t walk around flashing everybody, both the willing and the unwilling. He watched quietly, his expression unchanging, as the stranger made his way over, smiling lightly before speaking up once more. He huffed slightly when the stranger remarked the silliness of his action, but didn’t yell or glare at him for it, yet. He supposed it really wasn’t a constructive move, but at least it had made him feel better, that was until this clown decided to show up and ruin his day.
“I’m also lost, wasn’t that obvious?” he snapped irritably as he dusted off his knees, or tried to anyway. His clothes were still a little damp from the water he’d fallen in, and the sand wasn’t letting go no matter how hard he brushed. After a few more wipes, he gave up, it wasn’t working anyway, and it wasn’t like it actually mattered whether he looked good right now or not. In fact, he never really cared about superficial crap like that. He had no intention of staying here. He’d find Mother, do whatever it was she wanted of him, and then hopefully, she’d let him go. Back to a place where he hadn’t felt miserable all the time. Glancing back over at the other guy, Kadaj opened his mouth once more, “Don’t tell me that blasted bird dumped you here as well.” The day was just getting better and better. Kadaj had hoped for a miracle, and what had he been given? A foolish prettyboy with a thong and an attitude. Now to add to all his other problems, he had to very specifically avoid looking at anything besides his face, lest he think Kadaj actually wanted something from him. He did not, for the record. He’d rather the guy just keep his thong and everything inside that thong to himself. “Any particular reason you’re not wearing pants?” Kadaj asked awkwardly after a little while, deciding that this was just too odd not to comment on. All the while (With the exception of when he’d first noticed the guy), he managed to keep his eyes stoically ahead of him, which was quite the accomplishment. His face was usually quite expressive.
It didn’t matter anyway. What mattered right now was getting out of this forest, preferably before nightfall, as he didn’t relish the thought of sleeping in a tree or on the ground with annoying little critters walking around and possibly over him. Maybe if he went back and tried to find that chocobo’s trail, he could find a way out. That feathery bastard was likely on its way back to its master to drop Kadaj’s stuff off and to take another unsuspecting soul into these woods, leaving them to die. He looked around thoughtfully. This would be so much easier if he could remember which direction the chocobo had run off to.

When Kuja came across the clearing, he was expecting the figure that presented itself to him. Unfortunately the black-clothed man did not seem much like the adventuring-through-the-forest-alone type which, coupled with his current rage, highly increased the likelihood of him being lost. A likelihood that was confirmed a few minutes later after Kuja finally spoke up and got his reply. Kuja casually waved off this snappy comment, “No matter.” The man did have a point, what could he realistically have been doing out here other than being lost? It seemed unlikely that he was an extremely stylish lumberjack. Still, it was disappointing, knowing now that there was no easy solution to finding his way out of here. He did not miss the other man’s look of surprise upon seeing him, but he did not think much of it. For one thing, what were the chances of coming across another man out here in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere and for that man to be as beautiful as Kuja? Slim indeed.
Kuja remained silent for a while as the stranger attempted to dust himself off with no luck. Those specks irritated Kuja, but there wasn’t exactly anything he could do about it. He just liked things to be clean and orderly, including other people. The genome was unsure how to proceed with this. Should he suggest that they help each other to get out of here? He was unsure how this guy would react, not to mention he was not even sure that he wanted help yet. Kuja worked alone. That was how it was, how it had always been until recently. But without Zidane’s help he would never got out of the Iifa Tree, and if he had not insisted on marching off alone straight afterwards then he might not have walked straight into that fal’cie trap. Unable to make up his mind, Kuja ended up blurting out, “What’s your name?” He cursed himself internally. That was supposed to come out as a sophisticated introduction, instead he sounded like a child on its first day of school. Perhaps he could salvage the situation slightly, “I only ask because you are lost and I am lost. There may be some way we can be of use to each other.” That was better... slightly. Damn it.
He tilted his head slightly at the man’s question about the chocobo. “The bird? So that was your creature that almost trampled me?” Kuja questioned with mild disgust in his voice, “If it comes back I plan to cook the damn thing.” He indicated behind him the way he had come, “It went that way, in case you were wondering. If you were planning to make it into soup I would be glad to assist you.” Kuja wondered idly how chocobo soup would taste. Probably unpleasant but he was hungry and it would be extremely satisfying to revenge himself on that creature. Not that it had really inconvenienced Kuja (certainly not in the way it had Kadaj) but that would not stop him from setting it on fire if he saw it again. Kuja was not quite over being the ‘bad guy’. Unless the stranger had any qualms about cooking the bird, in which case Kuja might reconsider, but no promises. Genomes definitely had some cat-like qualities about them and bird was always on the menu.
Kuja couldn’t help but let his eyes flicker down to his own legs at the stranger’s odd question, bare from the knees up after his long boots ended. Okay, he was not exactly hiding himself away, but he was still covering the important parts. Nobody had ever mentioned his attire to him before, even in Treno where he had spent a sizable amount of time in respectable company as owner of the auction house. Apparently his attire was considered strange on this world or at least by this particular gentleman. Kuja merely shrugged, “Why not? I am not ugly. I don’t have to hide myself away.” The other man wore a black jumpsuit, not entirely unlike the orange one that Princess Garnet had worn, but definitely tighter. But then who was he to complain about that? Neither this stranger nor the princess had been ugly either. Now Queen Brahne, there was somebody that should just be kept hidden permanently in a marquee wherever she left her castle. Urgh, the elephant lady, how disgusting she had been. He had no regrets about ending her life at all and, besides, her soul had been oh so useful in gaining the power of Ultima. A power he was very much looking forward to using on that old fal’cie as soon as he got the chance. “Tsh,” was the only intelligent response Kadaj could hope to muster as Kuja waved his snappy comment off like a fart in the wind. Maybe it really didn’t affect him, but Kadaj simply wasn’t used to that sort of response. Usually people held their hands up defensively and apologized for pissing him off, some even ran when his eyes glimmered with bloodlust. Whoever this was, he had to be a pretty powerful fighter if he remained unaffected like that even in situations like these, if not a fighter than at least someone who was confident in their skills. As he stood and brushed off his clothes, his eyes moved over this new person, and the first thing he noticed of course was the odd attire. To say it surprised him was putting it lightly… he could safely say that in all his time on Gaia (Which admittedly wasn’t all that long) he had never seen anyone dress this… provocatively. It wasn’t ugly or anything, just… well… it didn’t leave a whole lot to imagine. Not that Kadaj wanted to imagine anything about a thong wearing forest creep of course. For a moment, he didn’t even feel all that angry or anything… and just stared the man up and down as he wasn’t sure what to make of all this. Was he simply from a country Kadaj had never visited before? It wasn’t like he’d had time to go sight-seeing or anything, he’d been too busy trying to locate Jenova at first, and trying to fulfill his part in the Reunion after. And now… what was he searching for now? Answers, but answers to what? His mind wandered and for a moment he forgot Kuja was even there.
He must’ve taken too long to speak up again, because a minute or two of unintentional crotch-staring later, the stranger spoke up and demanded his name. Immediately the Remnant’s eyes snapped up to his face as he forced his expression back into stoicism, or something resembling stoicism anyway. Coughing awkwardly, he listened as Kuja finished clarifying his question. It did seem like a logical thing to do, to stick together for now and see if they could perhaps find a way out of this forest together. Two minds were better than one, after all. Even Kadaj could acknowledge that much. “Kadaj, you?” he asked calmly as he began to look around for a way out. If only he could find out where that chocobo had ran off to, that would make things infinitely easier. It might not have been so hard if he hadn’t chopped down half the forest in a fit of rage just a moment ago, creating a wasteland of trees all around which made it difficult to navigate.
“It’s not mine! It tricked me!” Kadaj hissed angrily, but he resisted the urge to beat something for now, “Trust me, if it dares to come back, its dead. Goddamn oversized chickens.” He muttered irritably as he gazed off into the direction Kuja had pointed in, swatting at his hair as it fell in front of his eyes. Goddamn hair, he had half a mind to just grab his blade and cut the longer pieces off, but in this mood it wasn’t a good idea. It was more likely that he’d end up stabbing himself in the eye than him successfully giving himself a haircut. How Yazoo dealt with this, he would never understand. Loz had the right idea though. He frowned a little when he thought of his brothers. Were they even brothers? All of them were merely parts of Sephiroth, they weren’t actually people. Still… he did hold some affection for both of them, an affection he felt for no one else. Somewhere in between chocobo torture fantasies, feelings of irritation over his current predicament and feelings of loneliness over not being with Yazoo and Loz right now, his mind finally processed what Kuja had truly said. “If it wasn’t the chocobo, how the hell did you manage to get lost here then? Decided to take a merry woodland stroll and got distracted by the---” he winced slightly and cut his sentence off when his eyes again wandered downwards. For goodness sake man, wear some… some… non attention drawing clothes! “By the---“ he again had to stop when his eyes moved on their own accord. “Stop that!” he scolded himself inwardly, but it wasn’t helping much. This was all Kuja’s fault, he was willing to bet that was the whole reason he wore that outfit in the first place, to make people act like bumbling idiots so he could appear smarter. Well, he wasn’t beating Kadaj this easily. With quite a bit of effort, he forced his eyes to stare at Kuja’s face instead before he stoically inquired about the thong while struggling not to let his gaze drop too low. Whenever he reached Kuja’s chin, it was too low for comfort and he forcibly brought them back up. Nerves of steel.
He rose a brow at Kuja’s explanation. He wasn’t ugly, so it was perfectly alright to flaunt. Great logic. “Doesn’t mean you have to slap people in the face with it either,” He remarked as he crossed his arms, finding it surprisingly easy to keep his eyes up at appropriate heights now that he’d brought this to Kuja’s attention. He stared him down for a moment, but then shrugged and relaxed his stance. “It’s none of my business anyway, we need to find a way out of this forest before the sun sets.” Camping wasn’t up there on his list of things he still wanted to do, if they were still lost by the time the sun went down, so be it, but he wanted to at least try and prevent that situation from happening. He turned again to the direction the chocobo had fled in, “So… that way?”

Kuja waited a moment, but the other man did not speak again. He almost seemed lost in thought, but Kuja had not said anything to suddenly stir an internal debate. Great, this guy was a simpleton, wasn't he? That or very philosophical about getting lost in the woods. Kuja was not entirely sure he liked where the stranger was staring either, but his eyes appeared to have glazed over in thought rather than staring at what Kuja thought they were staring at. You wish, don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. When he asked the silver-haired man his name however, he snapped out of his thoughts and answered. "Kuja," the genome replied, offering his own name in return. Kuja took Kadaj's calm tone as an acceptance of his statement they could be useful to one another. At least they would be if the remnant did not go off daydreaming like that every five minutes. Kuja could not contain a smirk at that angrily hissed comment, "You were tricked? By a bird?" Oh, that comment was going to go down well in Kadaj's current mood, but Kuja could not even help himself. When had Kuja ever been concerned for the feelings of a stranger? Not often, if ever at all. As Kadaj's hair fell into his face. Kuja decided that he quite liked it. It was a slightly random thought to pop into his mind, but his hair was not dissimilar to Kuja's own, just a different cut. It was nice though. Kuja might have considered it for himself, if he wasn't stunning as he was.
Kadaj stuttered a couple of times over the end of the last thing he tried to say, but both times he was unable to actually finish what he was saying. Kuja did not miss where Kadaj's eyes were heading either, he was a very observant person and the staring was quite obvious. He almost rolled his eyes at the question, deciding to without any comment about those looks for now. "Hardly," he drawled, hands on his hips, "I was tossed through a portal by an old man whom I would very much like to find again so I can kill him." He had a fierceness in his tone that left no doubt as to the genuine nature of his threat. Kuja probably should have been more worried about making such statements in front of someone he had only just met, but he had spent a lot of time alone and all of that time as, essentially, 'the bad guy'. Being crafty and evil did not usually entail coming across as charming and lovely. Only in Treno and with his dealings with the Queen of Alexandria had he really been required to don the mask of civility. Otherwise, Kuja could act just as cold and cruel as he wanted, although always with that edge of refinement that seemed just part of his nature. In this case, however, he did not feel like he required the mask, even while he still required the man's help to escape this forest. For some reason he got the feeling that Kadaj was not the kind of guy to be too bothered by a few threats or even a little violence: as long as they weren't directed at him anyway. And although Kuja was trying to reform his ways a little... well the old man - the fal'cie - had attacked him first! That deserved revenge! And given him a focus to boot, although Kuja was not really sure what that was yet.
Kuja put one hand to his chest, looking faintly surprised, but still quite amused. "Slap people in the face with it? Hardly. I am only here for people who choose to look." There was something about the tone in which he said those last few words that showed he had very clearly seen Kadaj struggling not to look and was referencing it now. It did not seem to matter so much anymore, since Kadaj's eyes had successfully stayed on Kuja's face for the last several minutes and seemed unlikely to wander again. Heh, almost a shame. He was receiving a glare from Kadaj, but he broke the eye contact after a moment, another show of him not being bothered by the other man. Not before he noticed Kadaj's eyes were quite pretty however. Strange, almost catlike...
"Yes," Kuja agreed, mind back to the task at hand, "I don't particularly desire to turn this into a camping trip." Technically Kuja had the power to set up teleporters, but that would be obscenely dangerous if he did not know exactly where he was going. If the land rose or fell he could find himself coming out encased in rock or stuck halfway through somebody's wall. Not options he was sure he would survive. Besides, setting them up took a while and they could well find their way out before he could be finished. Kuja looked at the ground, unfortunately the bird had not really left any tracks, although there were little hints here and there if you looked closely enough. Probably some master huntsman would have laughed at the pair of them and spotted a trail immediately, but Kuja did not have those kind of skills. He used magic. And other people did not because they were stupid and therefore had time to spend all their lives slowly learning to track a chocobo through a forrest. If nothing else, magic would be useful here to make a trail behind themselves, then they would know if they were going in circles. He nodded as Kadaj pointed out the direction that Kuja had just come from, “Seems like it.” WORDS; 981 TAGGED; Kadaj LOCATION; Ancient Forest, Gaia OUTFIT; Usual NOTES; <3 LISTENING TO?; Nothing

Kadaj eyes narrowed and he decided that he didn’t like this Kuja fellow. He just waved off all his angry looks and mocked him for things that he (kind of) deserved to be mocked for, such as the chocobo tossing him off its back and then running off with all his stuff like the stealthy trickster it was. Lulling him into a safe feeling before pulling that move… oh if he got his hands on that bastard, there would be hell to pay. The point was, Kuja was not impressed by any of it. Something was seriously wrong here, why didn’t his glares make him shiver in his panti—err… thong? It had to be bluff. No other explanation for it. “Yes I got tricked by the chocobo, does that strike you as amusing?” he replied sharply, trying hard to keep his cool but obviously failing at it. He didn’t have a lot of patience, and his mood was already quite rotten without having Kuja laughing at his misfortune, not that he was actually laughing or anything, but Kadaj wasn’t so out of this world that he couldn’t hear the amusement in his voice as he questioned him about the bird. “I rented it to get across the continent, but it tossed me off in the middle of this forest and took off with all my belongings, it’s no laughing matter,” he explained, and regretted doing so the second he had finished his sentence. If he were perfectly honest, he might’ve chuckled himself if someone told him this wonderfully stupid tale. No one got this unlucky. Except for Kadaj, apparently. A sadistic little smirk played on his features as he thought of the world of pain that awaited the chocobo, “It will regret its actions once I find it again.” He spoke in a remarkably soft and calm tone. That was Kadaj, angry one second, smirking the next. He had just been created out of nothingness, no mother or father to raise him and teach him about emotions and how to properly show them, and a seeming inability to feel anything positive besides rare moments like these where he could derive some pleasure from someone else’s suffering. It was a miserable existence, even Kadaj knew that. It was why he wanted to return to the Lifestream so badly. There, he had been able to feel things he’d never been able to feel here on Gaia, a sense of peace, of belonging. He wasn’t a person, just part of one. The bad part, at that. Loz was probably the most human out of the three remnants, actually capable of feeling something besides rage. For a time, he had envied the man for his emotions. Sadness and tears had to be better than what Kadaj was feeling half the time, but those feelings of jealousy were fleeting. He’d had a goal back then, something that gave his existence some purpose, some hope. If he and his brothers brought Sephiroth back, Mother would be pleased, and she would reward them for their efforts. And she had, she had accepted them into the Lifestream, had granted Kadaj the peace he’d unknowingly sought. But now… now he had nothing. Just an empty memory of that time of peace, and no idea as to what he should do now. Did she have another purpose for him? If so, why couldn’t she tell him? He had done as she wished last time… why was she punishing him by letting him wander through the darkness alone?
All his inner turmoil flashed through his mind in a matter of seconds, which was fortunate. They really couldn’t afford to stand here too long. The forest was big, and they had little time before the sun would set. He just hoped they’d make it out of here in time, and if not, he hoped they’d at least be able to find some sort of shelter. An old hut or whatever, so they wouldn’t have to sleep on the ground with twigs sticking up places you really didn’t want them and bugs crawling all over them. Kadaj’s expression turned into a mix of wonder and confusion at Kuja’s answer. A portal? And an old man had tossed him through? That was… unique. He supposed he was in no place to judge though, having been bested by a chicken just minutes ago. Still… an old man? “I take it this old man was some manner of sorcerer?” it had to be that. It couldn’t be a warrior, because how would an old man lift a sword, let alone fight with one? Perhaps if he’d kept up his training over the years, but didn’t human bodies eventually just… degrade? To the point where they couldn’t be used as efficiently any longer? It had to be a strong man though, because Kuja despite his colorful outfit didn’t strike Kadaj as a wimp who couldn’t take care of himself. He hadn’t seen him fight yet, but considering his attitude, he had to be more powerful than he looked. Or maybe he really was bluffing. In which case, he was a damn fine actor because Kadaj was totally falling for it. The odd personality, the odd outfit… which was once again roaring its ugly head around in their conversation… Kadaj just couldn’t help it, how was that outfit in any way practical for fighting? Half of Kuja’s body was exposed to attacks, and the parts that were covered up were merely covered up by cloth. Not a great way to keep yourself alive, was it?
His eyes widened some at Kuja’s statement and he found himself opening and closing his mouth about two or three times trying to come up with a good explanation for staring. Obviously Kuja had noticed… but then, how could he have missed such obvious staring? Maybe the best thing to do here was simply let that comment slide and pretend all was well, that Kuja was simply a madman for thinking he had even let his eyes linger there for more than a second and just… wave it off. Yes, that sounded like the best thing to do. Clearing his throat awkwardly and shifting a little on his feet, obviously feeling a little flustered over having been caught doing such a pitiful thing, Kadaj decided to just bring the subject of them being lost back up. It was as fine a distraction as any, and above all else, it was true. They really did have to get a move on if they hoped to get out of this hellhole before sundown. “Right…” he murmured as he walked past Kuja, deciding that it would be in everyone’s best interests if he took point. He didn’t want the other man subtly suggesting that he’d let his eyes wander again, even if it was the truth. Which it wasn’t. He had his eyes under control now, nothing to worry about.

"Somewhat," Kuja remarked in a dry tone. To his credit, he did not laugh, but then Kuja was hardly one who felt the urge to burst into side-splitting laughter very often. That playful smirk did not shift from his face though. Neither did he miss the sadistic smirk that appeared on Kadaj’s face. That would have been considered strange, even slightly frightening, by most people, but then Kuja could understand those kind of urges entirely. He kind of wanted to turn the chocobo into a meal as well, just for it accidentally running him over. At least if they found it they would have something to eat. “So you have no equipment? Neither have I. This should make for an interesting journey.” Interesting meaning uncomfortable, of course. Kuja had about as much experience living in the wild as he appeared to - in other words, none at all. If anything it had been a long time since Kuja had known anything except the lap of luxury, despite spending most of his time so far away from the rest of the people in his world. Perhaps this Kadaj had some idea about surviving in the wild for a night, but Kuja doubted that he knew a lot more than Kuja did himself. No, this was all just adding to the reasons why they really had to try and make for civilization before night fell. Damn, how he wanted his silver dragon right now. He would quite happy exchange all the Gil he had just for that dragon and the chance to go home. Kuja knew she would follow him, having an innate sense of direction and the ability to know wherever he was, so she was probably trying to get through a portal to him right now, but these portals were most likely infrequent. For all Kuja knew it could take days for her to get through to him, maybe longer than that, and he certainly was not going to spend that time in a forest if he could possibly help it.
"A fal'cie," Kuja frowned, giving a half-nod to indicate Kadaj was mostly right, but not entirely, "If he was only a Mage I would have had the power to dispatch him easily enough. But Fal'cie are not human though, they..." Kuja trailed off and shrugged, "I don't entirely know what they are for sure, to be honest with you. I have only met one and I don't trust his word for what he is, not one bit." Of course the old fool would have been lying, Kuja did not trust him, but how much had he been lying? That was the question. The part about the focus, the brand... Kuja had to accept it was probably true, he had the brand and the strange vision that had been described as proof. His focus had not been hard to work out. In his dream, he had destroyed the world: Gaia, the world of Alexandria and Lindblum and Madain Sari. Why did this fal'cie wish to destroy that world? Ironically, just as soon as Kuja had chosen not to destroy the world of Gaia, that was when he was threatened with eternity as a monster should he choose not to follow through with his former threats. Well, the alternative was apparently death anyway and Kuja had learned not to fear death in the same way anymore. By all accounts he should be dead already, so he would stay away from Gaia until he had decided on his course of action. It was not as if he thought he could not bring about the destruction of Gaia; he had thoroughly ravaged Terra with the power of Ultima. But he had chosen not to and Kuja did not want to be controlled anymore. Garland, Chaos, fal'cie... It stopped now. Here, in this stupid forest with this ridiculous excuse for a companion and no supplies and no directions. At least he would be free.
Although, if he was honest again, Kadaj was not really a ridiculous excuse for a companion at all. Sure, he was strange, but at least he was pretty and had nice hair and seemed quite alright with a little bit of revenge. These were all qualities that mattered to Kuja, sadly. Certainly Kuja felt he could have found a much worse person to have to accompany, many from his past springing to his mind at once. "What world is this?" Kuja asked as they walked, Kadaj taking the lead. Kuja had to wonder if that was deliberate, when moments ago he had pointed out Kadaj's staring and the other man had been unable to come up with an excuse. Kuja smiled again. This could prove to be... interesting... after all. And he did not mean that as a sarcastic substitution for uncomfortable anymore. Kuja did not exactly have any plans as yet, but should they not find their way out of this place immediately, well just maybe he would think of something. As for right now he was quite happy gliding along behind a man in a tight, black jumpsuit that was entirely easy on the eyes. Trying to not get entirely distracted, Kuja concentrated on two things: keeping an eye out for monsters (although the idea that any common monster could hurt him was laughable) and bending twigs on trees at regular intervals to mark their trail. Even Kuja knew it was easy to end up walking in circles in a forest if you did not leave a marker of where you had been. “Well...,” Kadaj started in the same dry tone, but then trailed off, unable to come up with a clever comeback. There really wasn’t anything else he could say to that. Are you amused? Somewhat. How did one reply to that? By ignoring it? By punching him in the jaw for being a smartass? Kadaj really didn’t need an enemy right now, and he’d already started a reply so it was too late to pretend he hadn’t heard. What was wrong with this Kuja guy anyway? He’d used up most of his subtle ways to scare people off, but Kuja didn’t even flinch, it was like he really wasn’t worried or afraid of what Kadaj might do. Maybe he saw through the bluff and realized that, while a violent individual, Kadaj was hardly one to just randomly attempt to murder people who displeased him even in the slightest. Many people had annoyed him in the past, but he’d killed none of them. In fact, the only person he’d genuinely tried to kill was his very ‘brother’ – Cloud. He supposed those Turks, Elena and Tseng, would argue that he’d wanted them dead too, but that wasn’t entirely true. He just needed information off of them, if they’d just answered his questions there would’ve been no need for the unspeakable things the Remnants had done to them to make them talk. What had they hoped to achieve with their silence? Mercy? After the first few days they should’ve known that none of the Remnants were capable of feeling such emotions. It didn’t matter anyway, what was done was done. He had no need of the Turks any more, not for now anyway. Right now, he just needed to find a way to get out of the forest and back to civilization. He briefly glanced at Kuja again as he remarked how interesting their journey would be. Maybe Kuja realized Kadaj’s glares and sneers and whatnot were bluff… or maybe he was so powerful that he had full confidence that, should Kadaj attack him, he could beat him easily. While Kuja didn’t look much like a fighter, Kadaj knew that looks could be deceiving; he himself didn’t look all that impressive either, after all. The thought made him feel both a little uncomfortable and intrigued at the same time. Who was this man really?
“A fal’cie?” what in the world was a fal’cie? Some kind of monster that could shape-shift or something? Whatever it was, Kadaj had never heard of it. That wasn’t saying much though, Kadaj was hardly a wildlife expert, half the monsters of Gaia were unknown to him. He just didn’t care about those sort of things at all. He hadn’t cared back then, and he still didn’t care. Something tried to eat him, and they’d meet the sharp end of his blade; that was all there was to it. Nice and simple. Now that he thought about it, he really was a pretty simple man. Need to find out where Jenova’s cells are kept? Instead of spying on those who know and following them to the location, you just kidnap them and beat them to within an inch of their lives; much easier that way. Need to kidnap a little girl, just beat the only person who’s protecting her, though that one was Loz’s doing… was there really much of a difference though? In the end, they were all the same anyway; just incomplete parts of another person. “I have no knowledge of such a creature,” he spoke curtly, just in case Kuja had intended to ask him about it. He really didn’t want to speculate about some random, unimportant creature that had managed to best this guy in combat and had apparently hurt his pride or something. That was actually quite an amusing thought… Kuja, from what Kadaj could tell, could stand to be put down a notch or three in terms of pride.
“This… is Gaia,” he rose a brow, but said nothing else. What world is this? Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise him that there were other world besides this one, there were so many things he didn’t know yet. In many ways, he was like a child who saw the world for the first time, a child abandoned by its parents. ”Mother… what do you want from me?” after everything he’d done, what else did she want? He’d do anything if she’d just tell him what it was she wanted. Did she desire another Reunion? If it was Sephiroth she wanted, he’d give him to her. He’d succeeded before, he could do it again, even if Loz and Yazoo weren’t here to help him this time. Knowing his luck though, Cloud would drive by on his goddamn bike and just fuck his Reunion up again with his sense of heroic bullshit. Did he hate Cloud? Hard to say… Kadaj didn’t typically make categories for different levels of hatred. Cloud definitely irritated him though. Why couldn’t he just butt out of his business like all the other cowardly citizens of this world? …because your brother beat up his girl and stole his kids, that’s why. Perhaps if their roles had been reversed, if Cloud had done something to Loz or Yazoo, Kadaj would’ve had a similar reaction. Though if he’d have to make the choice between saving them or fulfilling his promises to Mother, he’d choose the latter. It was sad, really. He always chose her, no matter what happened, and yet she never chose him. The Remnant wouldn’t deny that he lived a pathetic existence, just like he’d never denied being a puppet. Being a puppet was humiliating and enraging, but what else could he do? What life was there for him besides following his Mother’s orders? Even if he wanted to, was a normal life possible for people such as him? Not likely.
For the longest time, he just kept completely silent, showing no interest in getting to know his new companion. Kadaj wasn’t one for small talk. From what they’d discussed, he could discern that Kuja was a decent enough fighter, and that was more than enough for him. He didn’t need to know his favorite color or the name of his dog or whatever crap normal people discussed during boring walks like these. Perhaps silences like these were awkward, if they were, Kadaj didn’t notice it. In fact, the silence was quite pleasant. It helped him focus on the task at hand. What helped him focus even better was the fact that Kuja wasn’t anywhere in his line of sight. The colorful outfit, the pantslessness, who could concentrate when someone like that was walking next to you? - - - - -

Kuja did not fail to miss Kadaj's lack of a proper comeback, but he just ignored it, but still maintaining that irritating smirk on his face. "A fal'cie is a being from a different world," Kuja explained as simply as he could, not knowing all that much detail himself, "The one that branded me seemed humanoid in shape, but another I saw was clearly mechanical, so I am not sure exactly what they are, but they are not just robotic. They are definitely alive, think, have feelings, that much I am certain." Kuja could not contain a smirk when Kadaj admitted having no knowledge of the fal'cie. "I didn't expect you to." If someone had spoken to him in that tone he probably would have incinerated them. Kuja wondered for a moment if it might not be prudent to watch his words slightly around the stranger, in case he proved to be more tough a fighter than he looked. Even if he did prove to be strong though, Kuja was unconcerned, he had never before met a single person that he could not defeat, not until he had met that fal'cie anyway. But then it was not strictly human, just as Kuja was not technically human either. Genome. Almost human. Even though it concerned Kuja less than it once had, he still wore these clothes that carefully hid his tail from general view. Funny how easily you could distract people from looking behind you if your crotch was on display. Kuja didn't feel like he was ashamed of being a genome anymore, now that it no longer meant being a slave to Garland, but perhaps he was not entirely comfortable just yet. Nobody was going to catch him hanging from anything by his tail just yet.
"Gaia?" Kuja questioned, slightly confused, and perhaps for the first letting Kadaj see something than arrogant superiority. "But Gaia is the world that I reside in, yet this place seems completely unfamiliar." Kuja thought he would have recognised a huge ancient forest like this one if he had ever seen it before. He had spent the best part of twenty-one years traveling Gaia on the back of his Silver Dragon, and she covered ground at an incredible rate. Kuja had to doubt that there was any corner of his world that he could not find at least slightly familiar. Yet this place... Well, Kuja could not rule out the possibly that this really was his Gaia, but he just felt like it was not. Perhaps the two worlds just happened to share the same name for their planet, it was a rather large coincidence, but not impossible considering they did appear to share the same language. The world could wait until he found his way out of here however. Then he could see if the cities really were Alexandria and Lindblum, or something entirely foreign to him.
As they walked, Kuja made no effort to break the comfortable silence that settled between them. Well, perhaps 'comfortable' was the wrong word, for there was nothing comfortable about this situation, but it didn't feel like an awkward silence and that was really the best Kuja was hoping for right now. As they walked on he did not come across any of his snapped twig markers, so at least it was a relief to know they were not going in circles. Still, there was no indication either that they were getting any closer to the edge of the forest. The trees were just as thick and the plantlife as plentiful. Kuja had to hope that the forest would thin out towards the edges, to give them a pointer in the right direction, or else they could come within a hundred metres of the edge of the trees and not even know it before heading back in the wrong direction. That was what was so annoying about this whole situation. Again Kuja had to fight the urge to just set up a teleporter right here and now, but it was too dangerous when he did not know where he was going. If this was his Gaia then he could teleport home, but if not then there was no telling where he could end up. In limbo probably, with his luck.
Further along their way, they approached a rift along the floor of the forest, several metres across and too deep to climb down and up the other side. Walking up to Kadaj's side rather than maintaining his position behind him, he glanced in both directions, but the trench ran as far as he could see on either side. What manner of being had caused such a rift? Mostly likely it was just some ancient earthquake fault or dried out canyon, but either way they were going across, because Kuja had just spotted a small trail on the other side. It wasn't much, just a dirt path, but that was still a hell of a lot more than they had to follow at the moment. Kuja lazily pointed this out, "That's where we are going." Without so much as another glance at Kadaj, he stepped off into mid-air like a crazy man, but instead of falling he just glided, descending slightly as he fell, but reaching the other side quickly enough to step up onto it quite easily. Once he had crossed, he looked back to Kadaj with mild interest, wondering what the other man's solution to this problem would be. If he did not have one, Kuja could teleport him across, but it would be intriguing to see if Kadaj had any powers of his own. His hand clenched into a fist, and it took more willpower than Kadaj ever realized he even possessed in the first place to not punch Kuja in the face for his cocky remark. ‘I didn’t expect you to’, well, you wouldn’t expect a swift kick to the back of your skull. Or maybe he would, this was obviously not a normal person, so maybe he’d actually see the attack coming. It would still be worth it though, just to see that arrogant smirk wiped off his face. One hand reached for his weapon, but at the last second, he stopped himself and instead let his hand fall back to his side. No, he’d have to keep calm for a little while longer. What good would it do to brutally murder the one companion he had in this goddamned maze of a forest? Even if this companion was making his blood boil to the point that he feared he might give himself a heart attack if he didn’t take a deep breath and focused on something else to keep his blood pressure from rising further. There was also the fact that, if Kuja turned out to be a decent enough fighter, he might have some trouble taking him down. Kadaj himself might get hurt and have to rest up before continuing on out of this forest, and he certainly didn’t feel inclined to spend more time here than necessary. He would just have to suck it up and keep his anger and frustration at bay until they found a way out of here, maybe then he’d be able to go all out. How satisfying would that fight be? He almost relished that moment.
But those were thoughts for later. For now, Kadaj was more interested in Kuja’s seeming confusion. Had he hit his head or something? This is Gaia but this can’t be Gaia? Sure, that makes perfect sense. Then again, this entire situation didn’t make any sense. Whatever. Kadaj just liked seeing Kuja brought down a notch by this revelation. He’d probably be back to his usual arrogant self in a little bit, but at least Kadaj could think back on this moment and smirk, knowing Kuja was really just a man as well, and not the awesome godly person he seemed to imagine himself as. He scoffed a little as he kept walking, “I doubt you’ve explored every single inch of the world.” As far as Kadaj knew, nobody had ever explored the entire world, mostly because some locations were a pain in the ass to get to, and they were hardly worth the effort anyway. Anyone who had enough time to visit every single lake and every single forest just had too much time on their hands. After that, they both just sort of fell silent. That was one thing he was grateful for, his travelling companion wasn’t some airhead who went about chatting about random crap that he cared nothing about. Instead, he knew when to shut up. That was nice… he still didn’t like him much, but it was something at least. It didn’t look like they were getting any closer to the edge of the forest… just how big was this place anyway? If you just kept walking in one direction, you were sure to get out eventually, right? Unless it was really massive. Massive enough that you could walk for weeks without coming across anything other than trees, trees, and more damned trees. Goddammit he hated nature. Plant life and wildlife alike, especially today. After a while longer, they came across a trench that seemed to stretch on forever. With their path blocked, Kadaj felt like killing someone or something. He wasn’t picky at the moment, any living creature that he didn’t need right now would do. This excluded Kuja, for now anyway.
He rolled his eyes when he heard Kuja casually tell him that they would keep heading forward. “In case you didn’t notice, there’s a huge-“ as he turned his head, he fell silent as he just watched Kuja glide across the trench like some girly butterfly. This had to be a joke… the clown could freaking glide? Why, of course he could glide, why not? And now he was standing on the other side with that patronizing look on his face, and this time, even if he wanted to, Kadaj couldn’t reach him to whoop his ass right now. This had to be what hell was like, you wanted to hurt someone, but they were out of your reach. You’d spend eternity chasing them, but you’d never get any closer while you just got more and more pissed off as the centuries dragged on. It seemed like Kuja was waiting for him to figure something out, some way to make it across. He probably thought Kadaj had no abilities of his own. Had he been a normal person, that would’ve been the sad truth. Normal people relied on materia to get them through things like this. A summoning materia might’ve actually been handy in this situation, he would’ve summoned Bahamut about three hours ago to fly him out of here. Kadaj wasn’t a normal person though, in fact, he wasn’t really a person at all. His birth and his entire existence were unnatural. On most days, he hated that thought, but today it turned out to be an advantage. Measuring the distance of the trench, he then took a deep breath and focused on the task at hand. His physical form just sort of disappeared as he formed into a cloud of fine black mist that lingered for a second or two before swiftly floating across the trench. As soon as he was on the other side, the mist vanished, and Kadaj’s physical form returned just a few steps behind Kuja. He smirked to himself, he wouldn’t be Kuja’s source of amusement. Not today. Without saying another word, he started walking again, trusting that Kuja would follow as he had before. - - - - -

Not missing Kadaj's hand flickering to his weapon for a moment before calming down, Kuja decided it would probably be best if he did not annoy Kadaj anymore for the time being. That did not stop him smirking widely the moment he turned his head, however. He still did not know how strong Kadaj was and it would be a shame if he got so angry that he tried to attack Kuja and Kuja found it necessary to put him down. Kadaj was pretty after all, even if that was all he had going for him. Also there may come a time in these woods when he did require a second pair of hands. There would be plenty of time for revenge and murder once they were free, so Kuja said nothing more and just walked at the rear of their little two-man procession. He largely preferred the silence anyway. Inane chatter was for the weak-brained. They must have walked several miles at least before they came to the trench that blocked their path. Kuja was actually relieved since this proved they weren't walking in circles and the trench was no obstacle to him anyway. Once he had floated across though, he looked back at Kadaj with expectation and a questioning look in his eye. Would Kadaj follow him? Could he? Here was a test.
Kuja, rather than being flummoxed by his companion's strange power, nodded with approval once Kadaj appeared beside him on this side of the trench. So he was a Mage too, of sorts. That was something Kuja could respect. At least he wasn't too stupid to use magic, or whatever kind of power he was imbued with to turn himself into that fine dark mist. Kuja was quite determined to figure out how that was done. It may be no more useful than his gliding in theory, but it was impressively scary - well, it would be to the cattle that called themselves 'normal people' - and scaring people was all part of the fun of being a Mage. They learnt respect through fear, something even they could understand, since they sure as hell didn't understand anything else about magic. "I am glad you have some power. You will be more useful this way." It was a very blunt statement to make, seemingly making it quite clear that Kuja considered Kadaj to be a tool to put to use, yet his attitude was ever-so-slightly more respectful now. Whether Kadaj would realise the significance of that remained to be seen.
Now that they had a track to follow, their progress was more rapid. Kuja was content to continue following behind Kadaj. As much as anything, he decided he may have made one too many wisecracks at the other man's expense to readily turn his back on him. Besides, all Kadaj had to do to lead them was follow the dirt track. Even an idiot could be trusted to do that. Kuja saw no more need for talk; he had questions, but they could all be answered in good time. The sun was setting and the light faded quickly amongst the gloomy trees. Soon it was dark. Kuja summoned up a ball of pure fire which floated in his hand, casting a fair amount of light into the trees around them. It took some effort, but not too much for a pure Mage like Kuja, who had about as much casting power as anyone alive. They needed somewhere to spend the night, twilight had set in and there was no end to the trees in sight. Fortunately, the path divided up ahead, one route heading on in to the unknown forest, another leading through to a clearing where there sat a cabin beside a sizeable body of water. Most likely this was a fishing cabin during the summer months, or perhaps a logger's hut in a scenic location. No matter what, it was empty and Kuja fully intended to occupy it. He didn't even find it necessary to tell Kadaj anything, just matched away off down the track to inspect. What he found was to his liking - the door was intact, there was a small supply of firewood in the back corner and the kitchen even provided the possibility of preserved foods. Kuja sat his ball of fire in the fire-pit in the middle of the room and then picked up a stack of firewood and plonked it on top. It was possibly the least well arranged fire in history, but since the fuel was magic everything caught alight just splendidly. Excellent. For a moment, Kadaj had seriously considered just walking away when Kuja floated over the trench to the other side and gave him a look that strongly suggested that he didn’t think Kadaj capable of doing the same. In a way, he couldn’t do the same, since he couldn’t float, but there were other ways of getting across that he could do. He’d really considered walking away and just finding his own way out of this forest, since Kuja was turning out to be just as annoying and arrogant as Kadaj had suspected when they first met. The remnant still had some pride though, and he would be damned if Kuja came flying back over to mock him about how he couldn’t make it across the trench, that seemed exactly up his alley… no… actually, not really. He would likely be amused, but he couldn’t see him being that childish. So more to prove a point than out of a real desire to keep travelling, Kadaj had made his own way across the trench. “I am just filled with joy,” Kadaj replied in a dull tone as he started walking again, not waiting to see if Kuja had more to say. He really didn’t care. By now, he was quite used to Kuja’s asshole behavior, and though it still irritated him and made him want to choke the life out of the cocky mage, he was at least accustomed enough to it that those desires stayed in his head rather than showing themselves through actions. His frustration probably made Kuja laugh anyway, that man really did consider himself to be superior to everything around him, and Kadaj wasn’t going to feed that already oversized ego more by letting him get a rise out of him and reacting aggressively towards him. He could just go and find other ways to entertain himself so long as they were stuck together in this hellhole of a forest that just seemed to drag on forever.
After a while of walking in silence, the path split and it seemed rather obvious which way to go, since nighttime was coming fast. With a scowl, Kadaj looked up at the sky to try and determine how much longer he had until the woods would become completely cast in shadows. Not that long, he assumed. He glanced off to the side to see Kuja heading for the hut, and Kadaj couldn’t help but sigh exasperatedly as he turned back to the path and looking down it longingly, wanting nothing more than for the sun to return and light their path so they could continue on. This was just freaking fabulous. Not only were they stuck together, now they had to share a sleeping place as well. This was really turning out to be a fantastic day, he thought sarcastically as he reluctantly followed Kuja to the hut and crossed his arms as he leaned against the door-opening, watching the mage mess with his fire. He really didn’t want to spend the night in this forest in the first place, let alone spend the night with company like this, but he really didn’t have much of a choice here, did he? It was either suck it up and endure it for one night, or he could go wander around in the dark, get lost, and spend an even longer time finding the way back to civilization.
Well, it was decided then. He’d just have to keep calm for one night, endure Kuja’s obnoxious comments for a few hours until sunrise, and then they could continue on again. Turning back, he walked back out of the hut and closed the door behind him as he went out to hunt, leaving Kuja to mess with his fire or whatever else the mage felt like doing, he didn’t care what Kuja did, he was going out hunting. They needed food, right? Yeah right. He was just going hunting because he was feeling anxious, and killing something always helped ease the tension. They were in a forest, so there were bound to be some annoying creatures around. Hopefully something strong would come along, something he could actually fight. That would really help matters. Considering his luck so far though, he’d either find nothing, or he’d find some cute fluffy bunny that would just lie down and accept death rather than putting up a fight. - - - - -

Kuja watched wordlessly as Kadaj walked out the door and left. He was coming back, right? He better be, because Kuja wasn't done with him yet. No doubt he was going to stomp about and huff and then he'd be back right around the time he got cold and wanted to sit near the fire. That was fine as far as Kuja was concerned, in fact the night looked set to be rather comfortable. Not as comfortable as his 4-post feather bed back at his hideaway on Gaia, but comfortable enough. Kuja was used to traveling around. He just wished so much that he had his silver dragon right now to take him away from these horrible woods and put him back on city streets. Kuja loved the city, he had spent most of his time in the city of Treno when he hadn't been actively trying to destroy the world. He wanted to go back to his auction house. All those antiques and art had really spoken to him and of course he made a nice fat profit on everything that went through the place. He could live his life there as a rich man. Only Zidane and his friends knew his identity and since he had saved their lives they all owed him one. Except for Zidane himself, who had somewhat paid that back when he had saved Kuja from the Iifa Tree in return. However, that option was closed to him as long as he had this brand on his ass ticking away his hours like a time bomb...
Food. Kuja dragged himself off the floor and went to rummage through the cupboards beside the sink. What he found was pleasing to him. Tins of beans, cans of tuna, canned meat, powdered eggs and some cheese sealed in wax. It might not be the most delicious meal he had ever served, but there was plenty of it. Ditching beans into a pan, he hung them over the fire to heat up while he started consuming the tuna straight from the tin. Grudgingly he left some for Kadaj. Well, it would never do him wrong to share, it would keep the inches off those hips if nothing else. On the other hand, he had walked all day and he would walk all tomorrow. Gaining weight was really the least of his problems. He dunked the ham in with the beans to cook. If only he'd had pastry, he could have baked a pie. He'd never made a pie before, but he was an all powerful Mage, how hard could it be? Well, it was a moot point right now. Instead he stirred the ham and bean concoction with a fork he'd found in the cupboard an tried a nibble. Basic, but it would do. Once the ingredients had thoroughly cooked, and Kuja's hungry belly could stand the smell of food no longer, he lifted the pan off the fire and dived in. He also cut himself a generous portion of cheese. Back home in his palace he probably would have set his cook on fire if he had been served this meal, but here it was great. Not to mention Kuja was his own biggest fan, so any meal his hands touched had to turn out marvelously.
After a while he had finished, but there was still beans, cheese and tuna left over. Kuja considered not eating everything a great act of charity on his part. With nothing else to do now, Kuja stretched out cat-like in front of the fire. His tail wriggled beneath his robe, begging to be let out as it usually was at night, but Kuja was not going to let that secret slip to Kadaj yet, if ever. Kuja was quite ashamed of his tail, his genome heritage, and the fact he had been made rather than born. Things he had come to deal with, but not details he wanted to share with the rest of the world. He wondered where his silver-haired companion had got to. Usually Kuja was the epitome of indifference, but he might go so far as to say he would be concerned if Kadaj did not return soon. The man was handsome, did not chatter and had shown some skill as a Mage. Kuja was not embarrassed to associate with him, and when it was Kuja talking that statement was a compliment. Kuja definitely had not finished with Kadaj yet. He was interesting, Kuja actually wanted to know more about him, and Kuja had never wanted to know more about anyone in his entire life, unless you counted knowing their weaknesses and how to manipulate them then kill them. No, he wanted to know... personal things. Like was he a human and did he have a family? Or had he too known the pull of the dark side? Kuja suspected he had. Maybe that was what made him interesting. Kuja had never known a bad guy who was actually bearable. Maybe Sephiroth, but he was insane. Not to mention he was far too attached to that blonde kid. The rest of those chaos warriors he had met in the world of Dissidia? Each one was worst than the last. There was the Emperor who wore so much makeup even Kuja couldn't forgive him. The old time-witch hag and the other woman who dressed completely inappropriately - and this was coming from Kuja - although at least she had the figure for it. Then there was the clown. Urgh, the clown... Kuja didn't have to associate with any of them anymore though. The Cosmos warriors had won and the wars of Dissidia were over. Kuja was quite happy about it actually. He had wanted the Cosmos warriors to win and had even tried to help them before that damn clown had ruined his plan and then tampered with his memories! Well everything was clear now. Something about getting branded had wiped the tampering from his mind. Perhaps the more powerful fal'cie magic had erased Kefka's magic. If there was ever a silver-lining, then it was that. Kuja couldn't stand to think he had any part of that hideous fool in his mind.
Never mind that now. It was done. Kuja stretched again, then curled up in front of the fire, in appearances asleep, but like any animal he slept with one eye open. His pointed ears remained perked for Kadaj's footsteps approaching the cabin. Kuja was not so foolish as to really drift off into a deep sleep right now. He was sure that upon Kadaj's return the first thought he would have would be to kill the Mage that had been wisecracking at him all day. In fact Kuja would be surprised if that thought hadn't crossed the other man's mind a hundred times already.
