A copy of LOVELESS: Somehow, someway, any time someone destroys the book Genesis will somehow pull out another. How many he has is a complete mystery.
Appearance
Genesis wears a red leather trench coat and gloves. Over his shoulders, he has black shoulder guards to protect his shoulders from harm. Under his coat, he wears black leather clothing somewhat similar to Sephiroth but with slight variations. He also wears black boots with a heel in the back, giving him some extra height.
Over all, Genesis appears to be in his mid-twenties. He has a pale complexion and seems to be moderately built, his body shape really toned for fighting like many of SOLDIER though nowhere near as ripped as someone like Angeal. On his right ear, he wears an earring, probably a cross earring, it’s not easy to see but it sounds about right. Genesis has pale blue eyes. One would think Mako eyes considering he’s in SOLDIER but for some reason, Genesis does not have eyes like that of Sephiroth and it seems as though Mako was only imbued in normal beings. Angeal and Genesis did not need Mako injection and thus, their eyes are normal since both are experiments just like Sephiroth except they have G cells, not S cells.
Height wise, Genesis looks to be around six feet tall. Weight wise, he’s no heavier than 145 pounds. Genesis also has short, shagged and layered ginger hair that reaches to just past his jaw line.
When he reveals it, Genesis also has a long, six to almost seven foot long wing. It's feathered and black in color. This wing, as opposed to Sephiroth, is located on Genesis's left shoulder blade region.
Personality:
Genesis can be a proud type of person. He enjoys the rewards SOLDIER reaped by making him feel like a hero and giving him fame for his skills. He can become envious of those better than himself, such as Sephiroth and will most likely challenge the person to do battle. Despite his fame in being in SOLDIER, Genesis only opens up to a select group of people that he knows.
He has a passion for artistic things, especially the poem known as LOVELESS. As a child, Genesis fell in love with the poem and dedicated his entire life to decipher its meaning. He has a habit of quoting the poem, which he has memorized. The fact he’d open up the book and read from the poem is for the hell of it pretty much since he has the entire thing committed to memory and there’s no real need for it. As mentioned before, Genesis is arrogant and is likely showing off when doing something like this. The fact he quotes the poem so much can annoy those around him but he doesn’t care. After all, he has a thing for culture due to his upbringing in Banora with his wealthy foster parents.
Genesis wants nothing more than to be a hero. Due to the goddess, Minerva, Genesis was given a second chance at life. It’s due to her generosity that Genesis will uphold being a hero in the stead of his friends, Sephiroth and Angeal. In a way, this makes him a bit of a threat because he will stop at nothing if it means protecting the planet from harm.
He can also be quite petty and childish. Things can easily anger him if he’s pushed enough, giving him a bit of a fiery temper at times so long as someone knows where to push the right buttons. Over all, Genesis is not evil despite the fact he had been mentally unstable because of the truth of what he had discovered. He had made many mistakes and he knows it. Genesis seeks redemption. Even if he was responsible for Sephiroth’s going into madness, he will accept the fact and face his former friend if he must.
Genesis can get irritated with others. An example of who gets on his nerves would be Zack. The hyperactivity can sometimes be too much for Genesis when it comes to Zack. Sometimes, it leads to Genesis baring his teeth and growling but rarely do they get into physical fights now that Genesis is sane again. He appreciates that Zack had helped him see the honor of being a SOLDIER and helped him fulfill his dream. Willingly though, he would not aid Zack in anything unless they’re thrown into a situation where they have to work together since Genesis still likes taking things solo.
History:
Who Genesis’s biological parents are is a mystery. What is known though is that before he was even born, he was injected with Jenova’s cells from Gillian when still in the womb. However, the experiment was a failure and Project S proved to be the successful one. Labeled a failure, Genesis was handed to a wealthy landlord in Banora to be raised. Unaware of his origin, Genesis encountered Angeal in Banora. Neither of the two were aware of the fact that they were experiments but somehow formed a friendship and grew up together happily. At a young age, Genesis had invented the famous Banora white juice or “Dumb apple” juice.
The two aspired to become members of SOLDIER, the two looking up to Sephiroth at the time. Genesis even hoped to share a Banora white with him one day. Genesis was envious of the fame that Sephiroth had got over the Wutai war. Thus, wishing to be like him and wanting fame for themselves, Genesis and Angeal had made their way to the top rather swiftly as SOLDIER 1rst Class. During that time, they formed a friendship with Sephiroth, the three of them very close to the point where Sephiroth knew them on a personal level as opposed to just comrades in arms.
Genesis remained unaware of his creation until the day when he had challenged Sephiroth one-on-one in a virtual training session. Things got out of hand to the point where Angeal had to step in to stop the two. Unfortunately, when Genesis’s rapier blade made contact with Angeal’s, it broke the tip of Angeal’s sword and sent the piece of sword flying at his right shoulder and injured him. Figuring it was just a minor wound, Genesis let Angeal and Sephiroth know it was nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, he hadn’t a clue as to how very wrong he was. Instead of the wound healing, it only seemed to get worse. It wasn’t until he noticed his lack of healing and simply getting worse when Genesis finally realized something was wrong with him. He didn’t know that the wound he had received had triggered his flawed genetics into degradation.
Of course, this sort of thing freaked Genesis out because he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t healing. Doctor Hollander, who knew of Genesis’s creation and wishing to take revenge on Hojo and Shinra, told Genesis that he could find a cure. Under the scientist’s orders, Genesis took 2nd and 3rd Class SOLDIER and turned against Shinra during the close of the Wutai War. Hollander injected these SOLDIER with Genesis’s cells, the two creating an army.
It wasn’t until a month later when it was discovered that Genesis had murdered his foster parents. Having felt betrayed after discovering the truth behind his creation, Genesis took his anger out on his foster parents for their deception. Being unstable at the time, he didn’t realize that his foster parents had actually grown to love him like any parent would instead of viewing his upbringing as a mere job entitled to them from Shinra.
In a warehouse just outside of the town of Banora, Genesis encounters Tseng and Zack. Incapacitating Tseng, Genesis turns to leave. Zack, angry by what Genesis was doing, tries to attack him but Angeal appears and stops Zack from doing so. In the village, it was also later discovered that Angeal’s mother was dead. Unfortunately, Zack assumed that Angeal had murdered her when in actuality, she had committed suicide. Before Zack can go chasing after Angeal, who is present at the time, Genesis tells them that Angeal can no longer live in their world anymore. Zack tries to go after Angeal but Genesis trips him up, preventing him further by summoning Bahamut to give Angeal time to escape the scene.
Once Angeal has left and Zack defeats the summon, Genesis reveals what he is to Zack by showing a large feathered left wing. He tells Zack that they’re nothing more than monsters, viewing themselves as such because of the horror they had discovered about their origins, and therefore were no longer SOLDIER. The harsh truth had sent them off the brink, Genesis more so than Angeal and the two hated Shinra for it. Genesis then takes flight and leaves Zack and Tseng to fend for themselves as the village is destroyed to cover up what Genesis had done. The two are later proclaimed as killed in action by Shinra. Of course, this wasn’t the truth.
It was a simple cover up story so that the public eye wasn’t aware of Shinra’s true plans. Genesis knew they would be coming for him so before Shinra could prepare, Genesis had his copies attack the Shinra building. Angeal is revealed to be hanging around the Sector 5 Reactor, bait to lure in Zack and Sephiroth to Genesis, Hollander and Angeal. When the five meet, it’s discovered that this is where Hollander had his lab where he was helping create Genesis copies and information on Project G. As Zack gives chase to the scientist, Genesis reveals to Sephiroth what he intends to do. He planned to find the “gift of the goddess” and wondered which of them was the hero of this poem, convinced that LOVELESS was real and that He, Sephiroth and Angeal played a part of it.
As the battle with Shinra continues, Genesis makes his way to Hojo’s lab with the intentions of killing the scientist. His plans are thwarted with the arrival of Angeal and Zack. It’s here where Genesis and the others have a brief discussion of the missing fifth act of LOVELESS. Genesis then takes that moment to escape, summoning Bahamut Fury to distract Angeal and Zack.
Later, in Modeoheim in a Mako excavation facility, Genesis is found confronting Hollander. Genesis, at this time, has begun to show more physical signs of his degradation. Even his clothes are turning white. Genesis, scared of the idea of degrading and tired of the set backs, told Hollander that he was tired of his failures and that he would search for Jenova cells on his own to find a cure. Hollander then counters it by stating that no one knew where Jenova was being contained. His hopes pretty much dashed and filled with anger, Genesis resolves to destroy the world along with himself instead then. It’s here when Zack and Genesis do battle only for Genesis to be defeated. Tossing himself over into the depths of the reactor, Genesis was believed to be dead.
Several months after the incident, Genesis’s army resurfaces again. This time, the attack on Shinra is global. Genesis, though not spotted by Shinra, is found to be still alive although his degradation still taking place as he stands upon the Mako Cannon observing what his army is doing in the area.
Genesis later meets up with Zack and Sephiroth in the Mt. Nibel Mako Reactor at its core. It’s here when Genesis reveals to Sephiroth the truth behind their creations. Where Genesis and Angeal were a part of Project G, Sephiroth was a part of Project S. It’s then that, to further his evidence, Genesis told Sephiroth about Jenova whom Sephiroth believed to be the name of his mother. Revealing Jenova’s hand in their creation, claiming that Sephiroth’s cells would never degrade because of him being a perfect product of Jenova’s cells. It’s these very cells that Genesis believes to be the thing that would cure him of his degradation. Honestly, the whole thing was rather abrupt and harsh to be revealed to Sephiroth. It was Genesis’s own way of being childish and getting a bit of a one up on Sephiroth despite asking his friend for his help.
It was no wonder that Sephiroth would react the way he did, refusing to help Genesis at all. Taking his leave of Sephiroth, it was then that Genesis had sparked his friend’s descent into madness. Sephiroth went to Nibelheim and discovered that what Genesis had told him had been the truth and it threw him over the deep end.
Four years after the incident in Nibelheim and Sephiroth‘s believed defeat, Zack and Cloud escape the mansion. When they do, they’re pursued by two Genesis copies. Before Zack can fight them, the real Genesis lands before them. According to Genesis, Zack and Cloud were both being used for Project S by Hojo’s experimentation on their bodies. Since Sephiroth was believed to be dead, only Zack and Cloud were the ones harboring the cells that could cure Genesis of his degradation. Figuring that he would test this theory, Genesis has one of his copies consume a lock of Zack’s hair. Unfortunately, that proves to be futile for the Genesis copy as it just simply mutates into a creature. Believing Zack no longer fit, Genesis takes his leave of him.
It’s not until later in Gongaga when Genesis copies try to attack Zack. The arrival of Hollander and Genesis, stopping the copies from killing Zack for his cells, saves Zack’s life. Hollander is discovered to be a Genesis copy as well, suffering degradation too. Genesis then reveals to Zack that they believed Zack’s body had rejected Sephiroth’s cells because of being in SOLDIER and now their new target would be Cloud. It’s at this moment that Genesis tells Zack that he believes he has discovered the final act of LOVELESS and leaves while Hollander and his copies search for Cloud.
Genesis’s final lair is found to be in the caverns underground in Banora. It’s here where Genesis is found to be standing before the statue of the goddess, Minerva. It’s the goddess that is presumed to be in the poem of LOVELESS. Believing the goddess materia to be the true “gift of the goddess” Genesis begins quoting LOVELESS again as Zack arrives on the scene. With the arrival of Zack, who had inherited Angeal’s Buster sword and Sephiroth’s cells, the friends were reunited and LOVELESS was fulfilled. Thinking of himself as the hero of the poem that is given the protection of the goddess, Genesis absorbs the materia and becomes Genesis Avatar. The two engage in battle with Zack coming out as victorious as Genesis is returned to normal, human form. There are no longer any signs of degradation and it’s at this moment when Zack realizes Genesis’s true intents. All Genesis had wanted was to regain his pride as a SOLDIER and be cured of his degradation. On his last legs, Genesis challenges Zack to a duel as a SOLDIER and gets struck down.
As he’s sent flying, Genesis lands and finds himself in the center of the Lifestream. It’s here where he finds the statue of Minerva coming to life as the goddess stands before him. She considers him for a moment, having seen his will as a SOLDIER, she allows him a second chance at life and sends him back. Alive but weak, Genesis finds himself being carried out of the cave by Zack. As Zack lays him down, Genesis watched as Zack retrieved three Banora white apples. It was to Genesis’s surprise that Zack took a bite out of them all, apologizing that he wasn’t the real thing but had fulfilled Genesis’s childhood dream of the friends all sharing Banora white apples, Genesis’s accomplishments. When Zak asks if the apples were the true gift of the goddess, Genesis shakes his head but because of Zack, discovered the true gift was the pride of a SOLDIER. Content, his dream fulfilled and himself restored including his pride, Genesis faints as Cloud and Zack continue on their own.
Two 1rst Class SOLDIER from Deepground arrive on the scene and retrieve Genesis’s unconscious body. The two are believed to be Weiss and Nero, wondering if Genesis would join them in their cause before taking him away to Deepground. There, the two tried to convince Genesis to join their rebellion against the Deepground leaders, the Restrictors. Wanting no part of it, Genesis declined their offer and sealed himself away under Midgar in a cavern until the day he would be needed in Sephiroth’s and Angeal’s place to protect the world. During his time with Deepground, Genesis’s cells were injected into people to see how their cells reacted when spliced. These people were known as the Tsviets and were put through numerous experimentations to see how their bodies reacted.
After the events in Dirge of Cerberus, when Omega is destroyed and Weiss dies, landing in the very cavern where Genesis is sealed it sends out a shockwave. This very shockwave is what wakes up Genesis. Finding his “brother”, Genesis speaks to him claiming that there’s no time to sleep and that much work has to be done. Taking flight, it’s only obvious why Genesis has returned to finally take up the stead of protecting the world in place of his friends.
