I could have sworn there was a thread like this somewhere....oh well. I'm too lazy to look for it.
But yes. You get the idea. Themes for the characters you play. Feel free to explain them or just be boring and post the link.
LET US (me) GO IN ORDER.
Firion - Roses by Poets of the Fall
I have to thank Taiya for this one. AND NO IT'S NOT JUST BECAUSE THE TITLE RELATES TO THE STUPID GIMMICK THAT DISSIDIA ASSIGNED TO HIM INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY GIVING HIM A PERSONALITY. The song itself fits, too. It speaks of, in a way, a buildup from humble beginnings or a hurtful situation - Firion's being orphaned and having his adoptive home burned - to a better state. Plus, the overall tone of the song has that slight reservation to the vocals and intricacy to the guitar work that I feel fits him too. So yeah - a rare case that the gimmick song actually fits well!
Edge - I Was Wrong by Social Distortion
A proud man having to chew on making some bad mistakes early in his life? That's Edge to a T. He's not quite as repentant as the narrator of the song, but Edge certainly has had to take a lesson in humility ever since he's lost his parents and come close to losing Rydia. He still talks a big game, but he doesn't mean it so much anymore. The kind of aggressive sound of the song and the vocals fits him, as well. Kind of like "I WAS WRONG, OKAY!?", which is probably exactly how he'd react.
Celes Chere - Faster by Within Temptation
Well, first off, Sharon den Adel's highly feminine voice with the badass metal in the background just fit Celes perfectly. Now that that obvious part is out of the way...giving up past scars, and not falling to shame over them, in favor of moving forward to bigger and better things? Yep, that's exactly what Celes is trying to do right now. Heck, even the fairytale of lies line works to fit the tone of the game. There are actually a few that work for her, but I feel like this one captured her current state best.
Rude - Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart
YOU LAUGH BUT IT'S TRUE. Listen to those lyrics. Forget my name while you collect your claim? See the lie that's right before my eyes? All Turk/Rude related stuff up in there, mayne! It just has a sense of danger to the tone, too, and the repetitive beat with the synthesizer and everything just give it a kind of professional, Rude-like feel to it. Okay, so there are two cases of gimmick-y songs actually working for a character. Nice.
Squall Leonhart - Fine Again by Seether
Squall's not the type of guy to go jumping around for joy that everything is starting to go well now that the sorceresses are gone and his friends are safe any everything. He's going to take it, and appreciate it, and remind himself of how things are fine now and he can, finally, try to live life a little, but he's gonna be reserved about it. That's what this song is arguably about. Can't you just listen to it and imagine it was Squall singing it? No? Well, I can. Think of it as the verses being his previous mindset and the chorus and bridge being the new one.
Cid Raines - High Hopes by Pink Floyd
It's like Cid wrote the dang song, man. Just taking one glance at the lyrics, and its talk of striving towards a new horizon despite the circumstances and constant failures, tells of Cid's story and worldview. Time took our dreams away. Steps taken forward but sleepwalking back again. COME ON. *ahem* But even beyond that, the stately sound of the song, complete with violins, acoustic guitar and heavy use of piano, match him as well. AND THERE'S A FREAKIN' DRUM MARCH IN THE SONG THAT REMINDS OF THE CAVALRY THEME. This one might be one of the most obvious up here.
Rygdea - Have a Nice Day by Bon Jovi and Peaceful, Easy Feeling by The Eagles
RYGDEA IS THE FIRST PERSON WITH TWO. Well obviously, country rock is right in the wheelhouse for his muse. So hey, two country-rock-ish songs (The Eagles more than Bon Jovi, but...). Have A Nice Day just fits how he handles the rough patches of life. People getting in his way? Well, they can have a nice day as he hands him their ass. Peaceful, Easy Feeling on the other hand...if feel like Rygdea's the type that just enjoys kicking back sometimes and letting the good things sink in so he can appreciate them. The song captures that kind of notion well. And it talks about lying out with a tanned woman under the stars. Hello, ironic accuracy.
Hope Estheim - Fix You by Coldplay
Well, maybe more like "fix things." Hope's motivation as he ages seems to be solely to fix things for everyone and bring back some happiness to his extended family and to the world as a whole. That's definitely his motivation here on-site, and that's what this song is about. He's gonna try to fix everyone's problems, despite how long it takes. The heartfelt tone of the song fits him, as well, as does the melodic simplicity. Heck, even the video with the sudden burst into running seems Hope-like! COME ON, DON'T TELL ME YOU NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS SONG IN RELATION TO HIM. Okay, you didn't, but you're welcome now.
Noel Kreiss - St. Elmo's Fire by John Parr
The ultimate "things are pretty dang bad and I might be kind of lonely, but dang if I'm not making the best of it" song. Is that Noel in a nutshell? You best believes it is, sonny boy. John Parr (not of the family from the Incredibles) even kind of sounds like Noel, doesn't he? D8 Weird. Anyway, just the overall motivational sound is suitable, as well. And I feel like Squenix was trying - even though they failed - to display Noel in the light of a boy turning into a man, which the song also displays.
Noctis Lucis Caelum - Leave Out All The Rest by Linkin Park
Outside of the whole "let me leave behind a good legacy" theme of the song, you have a narration from someone who's been putting on a tough facade but just wanting to be a person people appreciate down under and not exactly knowing how. That's how I've come to understand Noctis. Again, the reserved, thoughtful tone of the song I feel fits him as well. He's admitting he's not as strong as he says and that arguably, he doesn't want to be. He just wants to be remembered somehow, and at first, he thought the only way to do that was to be a big, strong man like his father. Not happening anymore, as he's starting to realize in-character, both for himself and for his father.
Trey - Talk by Coldplay
Coldplay gets two. I really tried to find another artist (Taiya can be my witness), but I just kept coming back to this one. Trey doesn't know what the future holds for this group of teenagers who have to fight wars, so talk to him! Help put his mind at ease! That's all he wants. He'd try to solve all of his problems through conversation, hence, the song. The tone also fits him (though Coldplay tends to have a very professional, studious sound all the time). OKAY SO THREE GIMMICKS WORK, though this one is less a gimmick, more his personality.
Eight - These Days by Alien Ant Farm
This song, in all its Alien Ant Farm oddness, manages to grasp a hold on Eight quite well, I think. He's one of the Class Zero members I feel is mature enough deep down to know what they're facing in life, knowing that things are rolling on towards rougher days, but he decides to put it aside in favor of just having himself a good time. Aside from that, the innuendo in the "I'd like to work you" line just fits Eight, too. Because WE ALL KNOW HE'S THE CHIVALROUS PERVERT. Or some such.
Anreval Lycus - 7 Days to the Wolves by Nightwish
Hey, this was the song that gave me a portion of my idea for him, so it gets the insta-nod! Not only do I feel like the song kind of displays how he deals with life kind of like a wolf, with his running with a pack of thieves and hunting money and such as that. And now he's being hunted by the wolves on-site. IT ALL JUST FITS SO WELL. Not to mention, the symphonic metal kind of captures the refined but physically barbaric persona he displays. It kind of poses the same questions that he poses to himself. Is there something to this life? Are people to greedy with that life?
Coulson Pike - Keep Drifting by Miracle of Sound
You don't get an explanation. If you can't figure it out, well...
Nike - Evil Angel by Breaking Benjamin
You have Nike here, a woman the Al-Bhed saw as some sort of a savior in their future war, ignoring her transgressions in favor of supporting her because they just wanted her to be stinkin' awesome for them, ya know? That's what this song kind of talks about - looking for a savior, ending up getting a little something different than you bargained for, in a way (though it's kind of one of those songs that can have multiple meanings, but for Nike's purposes...). And the badass tone and the title and everything. All dese fits, mayne.

I hope you feel loved Kent Here goes! LeonFalling Inside The Black - Skillet: Leon is a young man that struggles with the darkness in his own heart. Because of his past sins while being controlled, Leon has a hard time allowing himself to open up to anyone, including his own sister. Held back by fear of slipping back into this darkness and thinking he needs to find a way to repent for his sins, Leon punishes himself for what he has done, the memories crippling him. Yet he realizes that his strength comes from the love that his family continues to freely try and give him. He dreams of the past, when he had the freedom he now craves, and battles the darkness to obtain it. Rosa Joanna HarveyLittle Wonders - Rob Thomas: To say that Rosa hasn't had problems come up in her life would be a lie. Things have gone wrong, she's been kidnapped a bagillion times by Kain, but in the end, none of that matters to her. Rosa is content to just let the big things wash away, while her life is shaped by the little moments. The moments with her husband and son, with memories and treasures that she can always look back to whenever things don't go right. The little wonders still remain. Sabin Rene FigaroZack FairUnknown Soldier - Breaking Benjamin: I think the title really sets to mood about just why I chose this song to represent Zack Fair. As a SOLDIER, he had to deal with a lot of crap that matured him from a little boy to a man. The 'cave of monsters' that he dealt with made him a stronger person as he refused to back down from his duty. He kept his SOLDIER honor and pride that had been instilled deep within him, keeping Cloud safe, so that he could go on while Zack got 'left behind'. Though he achieved being the hero as he had so long desired, only a few people actually realized what he did for Gaia, and thus, he became an unknown SOLDIER. CissneiChelseaIn Between - Linkin Park - The tone sets off why this song really fits Chelsea. Calm, but almost pleading. Through the song is this setting between lies and truth, just as Chelsea has struggled with. Being in the field of gathering Intel, she has had to go on missions where she has to play with the emotions of others and dig up information on them. Somehow she got caught up between lies and truth when she started to actually care for someone that was just supposed to be another face on a file. Still, she was caught up in between her loyalty to her company and her desires. Years later, she still feels regret for her actions, and is trying to find the right words to apologize for and explain her actions. KylieSelphie TilmittSmile - Vitamin C: Though I feel that Selphie has a lot more depth then people realize, the dominant side of her personality is just the ability to lighten the mood. No matter what situation arises, Selphie is the first to smile and give words of encouragement to her comrades. She seems to face life with the idea that if you can smile through the pain, that the world will become a better place to live. Even when you're hurting, as she was when her friends in Trabia were killed, stay as positive as you can. Her bubbly nature goes deeper then having one too many energy drinks, but a part of her personality borne out of desperation. If you smile, then everything will be fine. RikkuLayne RileyGalenth Dysley/BarthandelusI'm Made of Wax Larry, What Are you Made of? - A Day To Remember: Okay really, do I have to explain this song? Really? You're going to make me? Okay, well this song has a very 'You're my puppet' theme throughout, and if you know anything about Barthandelus, it's that he really likes to make peoples his puppets. Be it because he has some evil plot to destroy worlds, or just to become some sexy lady and terrorize peoples minds, (Though he can do so with fingernails too, yes Cole, I'm talking about you) Barthandelus gains some sort of sick satisfaction with watching the downfall of others. So don't push him, he's got nothing to lose. Paddra Nsu-YeulMy Sacrifice - Creed: Of the centuries Yeul has lived, there hasn't been a time where the young woman hasn't made a sacrifice for the 'blessing' Etro bestowed upon her. Though the blessing was more fit to be stated as being a curse, Yeul faced each death with courage and a hope that she could keep the timeline safe. One vision was held above the visions that had to deal with the trials, which included Noel and the possibility that he can free her from her curse and bring about the new world that she asked him for. Until that time, she continues to sacrifice her life to serve the goddess Etro. Stella Nox FleuretBreakaway - Kelly Clarkson Growing up in a powerful family that made her follow ridged patterns in how she thought and acted, Stella has always dreamed of a time where she could be free from the rules of conduct that bind her. She's tried to reach out and change her fathers ways, but she simply felt like she didn't belong. Even with her background, she has become a strong person, with her own rules of morals, her own loyalties that she will follow, even though that means leaving her family and her life to create a new one. A future of peace, that's what she longs for, but before she can do that, she will have to leave behind those that, despite wrong behavior, she loves. Still, she takes the risk, following her own dreams. Can she bring the peace she craves? PromptoPretty Fly For a White Guy - The Offspring: Yet again, do I have to explain this one? Well okay, Prompto has never been lacking in the confidence department. Even if perhaps he doesn't have a clue, which is most of the time, he continues on with life thinking he's just about the coolest cat to walk the streets. He might do some stupid things, (lol might...) but he will still think that he made just about the smartest decision possible. And if he does do something really stupid, then denial is the best way to cover it! Right?! Right! In his own mind, he's the best thing that walks the earth. Aside from the classic PB and J sandwich...but that doesn't walk, so he's safe. Until they invent PB and J that moves on its own. Then he's sunk. Qun'miBaby Got Back - Sir Mix-a-Lot: I also kind of think this goes without words if you've had any dealings with Qun'mi Tru'e. Though there are plenty of aspects about this woman that have nothing to do with this song, for some reason she seems to have gained an obsession with butts. Whether it be slapping or giving them a little squeeze, Qun'mi really has a very hard time resisting if a good tushy comes along. She knows her own appeal, and has no qualms about using that to her advantage when necessary. Shake what your mama gave ya.
