There were lots of decisions that needed to be made. The timeline was being altered, messed with ever since Etro had stepped in and saved those l’cie from their fate as crystals, Yeul saw those changes, and that’s what caused her to die. Cursed with the job of being a seeress for all of eternity, to die and be reborn once again only to observe the timeline and the changes that were made. It made Caius frustrated, he’d been torn apart having to watch Yeul die time and time again, it wasn’t fair…and there was a select few he chose to blame. He blamed Lightning, he blamed Noel and Serah, he blamed Etro. It was over time that he had concocted this plan of his, to destroy Etro, to let Valhalla spill over and let the chaos take over Gran Pulse, to stop time forever, to keep Yeul from facing such a horrible fate. No one deserved it, and though the road to getting that far would be tough…he would do it for Yeul.
Resting a loose fist over where Etro’s heart lay within his chest, Caius glanced down at the dim glow of red beneath his fist and beneath his attire. A small scowl appeared on his lips as he then dropped his hand swiftly, looking around and thinking back to how to accomplish this. He needed to stop Serah and Noel from going through all these time periods and changing things, that would cause Yeul to die again and again, and as much as he had taught Noel over the young brunette’s years…it just wasn’t enough. Caius had up and left, going to free Yeul from her fate, and that’s when all of this happened. Having battled with Serah and Noel, Caius felt a bit defeated in way. He hadn’t won the battle, nor had he lost, but it was his younger companion he was worried about, wasting his time battling the sister of the knight of the goddess and his former comrade…it just wasn’t worth it. He had other things to attend to, like planning out what he was going to do next. He needed to rid of the time travelers and manage to kill Etro all in one hit.
Killing Etro meant killing himself. He couldn’t do that, he’d wanted Noel to do it before, to kill him and take place as Yeul’s guardian, but ultimately he held the heart of Etro, and one who stabs the heart kills the goddess, that unleashes the timeline and throws Valhalla to Pulse. That would save Yeul, and that was what he was going to do, whether anyone liked it or not, and most likely the latter was all he was going to hear about. He was the enemy now, though his heart was in the right place, his tactic for doing so was completely out of line. “I will set you free, Yeul.” He commented to himself, but as he gazed over his shoulder the at the silver haired youth, he felt his heart sink, knowing her days were always numbered. Time and time again had he seen her die, and every time a few tears always worked their way to his eyes, having witnessed a young girl such as herself die so many times…it wasn’t fair. Caius was going to make it fair for her. Living to die over and over again, it was nothing to be happy about.
“They’re solving the paradoxes, with each change they make, past, present or future, a little part of you dies, Yeul. You understand that, right?” Caius spoke, still not actually facing the seeress, not yet. With a heavy sigh, he pulled his arm back and gripped the hilt of his sword, pulling it from his back where it laid and brought it up to his front, stabbing the tip into the ground and looking at it with a grim look on his face. “I will stop them. They will pay for their tampering with the timeline…soon…you will be free from fate, I promise.” He said with one final glance over his shoulder, plucking his sword from the ground and holding it up and backwards like usual, taking a few steps past the seeress and towards the nearest time gate, he stopped…knowing she was going to say something, and knowing he needed to be with her at all times, he was after all her guardian…but something needed to be done. It was a shame someone couldn’t be in multiple places at once…
…or could they? --------------------- Words: 817 Muse: Great! Notes: This is set during Final Fantasy XIII-2, after Noel and Serah battle Caius in Oerba

Despair.
Behind the calm features, behind the lack of expression on the pretty face, lurked the despair that cut at her heart. Yeul walked behind her tall guardian, the picture of poise. No matter what she thought or felt, Yeul couldn’t let on about it. A heavy burden for such a young girl to carry, but as always, Yeul went on courageously. What else could she do? It wasn’t as if she had known anything but this. For her entire life, or many lives, she had always been a servant of Etro. The goddess had bestowed her with the ‘blessing’ of being a seers priestess, being able to see future events, paradoxes. Was it a blessing or a curse? After hundreds of years of respawning many times, Yeul still didn’t know. Perhaps one day she would be free from the service, but right now, she had to go about her lifetimes seeing the future, and dying because of it.
Keeping her eyes downcast, Yeul sighed heavily, fingering the daisy she had picked in Oerba as she followed Caius. Such beauty, but it was fragile. Looking at it, Yeul blinked to suppress the tears. No matter who you were, there was always a point when you had reached your limit. The breaking point. Right at that moment, Yeul was close to that point. Yet she trudged on as always. She had an important reason to continue. The timeline. They had to protect the timeline. As Etro’s servants, this was their duty. Why was it that it seemed so hard to find the desire to do so lately?
Perhaps because he had shown up.
Glancing over her shoulder behind them, Yeul could see Oerba in the distance and felt the weight on her shoulders. Noel would fight, as he just had. He would fight to change the future. Caius would fight for her. But she didn’t desire him to do so. She knew what she should do, but Yeul couldn’t sit by and watch the future unfold to the world. She didn’t want it to become what it was in the future. She waned happiness, life. If she couldn’t have any of these things herself, she wanted others to have it. That was her way. Unselfish. No matter what, she had t protect those that called Gran Pulse their home. Of course, the young priestess knew that she would continue to die if she tried. Knew she would continue to die if Noel continued on with his journey. There was death in the route that they were taking. She could accept her own death. Why couldn’t Caius or Noel accept it like she could? A better world was worth her dying repeatedly. If she could just see a better world for the people, then dying wasn’t so bad. It was just the way life had always been for her.
And Yeul wasn’t blind.
Caius was planning something. When had he changed? Looking back, Yeul couldn’t seem to pin point the date, but something was amiss…
His words forced her from her thoughts. Yeul knew that what he had just said was the truth. She wasn’t stupid. The end of this – IF there was an end – would be good for her. “Yes Caius, I know,” she spoke quietly. Despite knowing that it would continue to kill her, Yeul wanted Noel and Serah to change things. There had, of course, been dreams, fantasies of thinking she could be free from her service toward Etro. But that had all faded. Reality had its way of catching up to you, whether you wanted it to or not. With a lowered head and a heavy heart she continued to walk beside him, her slight limp pronounced, but stopped at the time gate. Lifting her head then, she stared at the gate, sadness written on her features, a deep aching within her. “Caius…” she started, unsure of exactly what to say. She was tired. Tired of dying over and over again. Tired of seeing the future. She was just…tired. Ending it all with them solving the paradoxes would be better then this life. “To live, not at all, is a better fate then this never ending cycle of service toward the goddess. However, the thought of bringing harm to anyone for my own release, would be selfish. Unfit for a priestess. I know…what will happen to me if they solve the Paradoxes. Death consumes everything in its path. Death will consume everyone eventually. Rather would I be consumed in this until the end of time, then cause harm to any of those around us. Caius…I beg of you. What do we have to lose if they do continue to tamper with the timeline? I'm...tired,” she finished softly, her head once again lowered, hands clasped together, the fragile daisy still clutched in her fingers. Despite staring down at her booted feet, nothing but the deep sadness, the hollowness showed in her features.

On the inside, Caius was angry, he was frustrated and very…very unstable. He kept that all on the inside though, he was with Yeul and she didn’t need his outbursts. He was just trying to think of what was best for her. After centuries of watching her die, it’d finally taken its toll on his mind, being completely unstable – and insane in some ways – but nobody paid that close of attention to him until now. His main focus right now was the stop the time travelers, to stop Serah and Noel before Yeul had to face dying again…which would come anyways, but their travels was what was changing the past and future, that was making Yeul die. Any change to the timeline would ultimately be fatal for the seeress, Caius did not want to watch her die in his arms again. That wasn’t fair, why did Etro have to burden her with the so called ‘gift’ known as the Eyes of Etro? Of course he’d been branded a l’cie shortly after, to ensure the seeress’ safety, but soon Etro just made him immortal, bestowing her heart in his chest and making him a guardian of both Yeul and the timeline.
It was a curse in Caius’ eyes, a curse that needed to be lifted. Without time, there would be no timeline to change, there would be no more death and rebirth for Yeul, and as for Caius himself…he wouldn’t have anyone or anything to guard, he could finally rest in peace – at the cost of thousands of lives, an entire timeline, and a goddess. Was it worth it? Sure, in his mind it was. Why didn’t anyone else see it like he did? Didn’t Yeul want to be free from this never ending cycle of being able to see the entire timeline? He didn’t understand how she could be so…Yeul. With a small breath, leading the way away from Oerba towards the nearest time gate, Caius wasn’t sure where to start with Yeul. She was always like this, no matter which Yeul she was, the one he knew in the Dying world, or one of many he’d had to protect and watch die…she was pretty much almost exactly the same as the last, it made it hard to watch her die over and over again…that was the biggest curse of them all.
Stopping in front of the time gate just in time to turn and look at Yeul as she spoke, responding to his own words, he noticed the hint of sadness on her features, it tugged at his heart a bit, but she simply didn’t see it like he did. She wasn’t the one who had to watch someone near and dear to her heart die over and over again. It was painful, like adding salt to a nasty wound and never letting it heal, only to open up again time and time again. Shaking his head slightly, he folded his arms across his chest, not wanting to argue with her, but wanting to explain his point of view, maybe if she saw it his way, then nothing would be a big issue?
“What have we got to lose?” he repeated in a calming yet questioning tone as he faced his younger companion. “Yeul, I have spent centuries watching over you, making sure each different Yeul is protected until her time is up, that is my job as bestowed by Etro…it’s a curse, for both of us. Don’t you see that?” he said taking a step towards her and placing a hand on her shoulder. She still looked so unhappy. That wasn’t what he wanted, but there was probably no getting through to her. “The end of time would free you, no longer would you have to die.” To be very blunt, that was how it was. Pulling his hand back he turned to face the time gate again.
“I do not want to watch you die until the end of time…the end of time is what will set both of us free from this curse. If the end of time is what is needed to do that…then I’ll end it myself.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 785 Muse: Great! Tagged: Yeul Wearing: His usual! At times one should remain quiet, and at others one should speak up.
Yeul had kept quiet for too long, but had now been the best time to say anything? After she spoke, Yeul kept her eyes downcast, green gaze boring into the daisy that she still held in her fingertips. She had to speak up. She had to try and change things, if only in her own way. The end would come, yes. She would eventually be completely gone if Noel and Serah continued on. But that was a sacrifice she was willing to make. Wasn’t she already dead? Yeul was, and had been, dead for a long time in a certain sense. This life she had, being reborn and dying, was no way to live. The goddess had called it a blessing, but to Yeul, it had become, of late, a curse. Despite this, she would hold up under the ‘curse’ as long as was needed. If it wasn’t her, then it would be some other poor being. She wouldn’t allow anyone else to have to bear the burden that was hers. A seeress never shirked their responsibilities. She could do nothing to combat what would happen.
But Noel could. He wasn’t a Seeress. He wasn’t tied up in this. She had to trust…trust in him. He wouldn’t let her down. So all there was for her, was to continue on as always, holding her chin up and bearing the burden with a calmness, knowing that some day Noel would free her. If death for eternity was the cure, then she would deal with that. She was tired of this. Had been for a long time. She was tired of dying, and then being dragged back by Etro, as if a teasing of the life she could have. Never had she reached her twentieth birthday. But even in death, could life be brought about. However, the goddess had to live. If Etro died, then there would be nothing to hold the chaos in Valhalla, and it would spill out to consume the other worlds.
She wished she could warn the youth she had come to care for much in her future form. Warn him to be careful. A new future was a must in order to save this world and maintain life, but if it was done wrong death would follow tenfold. She still believed in him. And in the sister of the warrior of Etro’s sister. They could do what she could not. Still, she had to push on, try to help however she could. She would die for this, but it was worth it.
What did they have to lose?
Carefully keeping her eyes downcast, she felt his hand on her shoulder and heard his words. Was he right? Perhaps she should have remained quiet. Still, this had to stop. He had changed, and she felt it, knew it, and was afraid of what it would bring. “Everything,” she stated calmly, but inside she felt pitiful, unsure. Still, she had to turn her eyes upward to look at him when he mentioned that it was a curse. Of course…of course she saw it was a curse, but it was one that she would bear. Nodding slowly, Yeul had to shift her weight to her other leg. “I see many things Caius. Some I would rather not. I see the suffering that this course will bring, Caius. Curses are often disguised with blessings, and the same is true opposite. If not I that bears this burden, who else? Who else would step up? No, whether it be a blessing or a curse, this Seeress bears it.”
Shaking her head, she once again stared down at her feet, wishing she could implore to him, yet controlling herself. “Rather would I die continuously then allow that fate to be complete,” she mentioned softly. As he turned away she walked toward him, the burden on her shoulders evident in her stride. Catching his arm with her hand, she looked down at her fingers wrapped around his arm. “Please, Caius. Never would I desire chaos to spill out. My death has driven you on in your feelings. I cannot help dying, but just like I have to bear my burdens, so you have to bear your own. I cannot do so for you, just as you cannot bear what is mine to bear.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words:; 925 Muse:; Great! Arguing with Yeul, even in this very subtle way, was a losing battle of course. Never did Caius want to harm her feelings or make her feel bad, but she needed to see things from a different perspective other than her own. Of course, that was easier said than done. She was a seeress, able to see many things and have an opinion of what she wanted, it seemed she’d rather people lived happy and the future be changed to perfection while she died over and over again. Did she not know the toll this was taking on him? Her thoughts and feelings were noble at that, but a man could only take so much grief and heartache in one lifetime, and it seemed his lifetime was going to last until the end of time itself. How many more times would he have to watch Yeul die in his arms until he was finally laid to rest? He’d been watching her fall since the War of Transgression…what did that say?
Her words…he understood, but he didn’t want to. He wanted to have things be simple, for things to just end here. He never wanted to live forever as a servant of Etro, it just didn’t sound all that appealing. He didn’t want to have to watch Yeul die all the time, but…sometimes you had to suck it up and deal with the hand you were given. For far too long had he witnessed these unfair binds that held Yeul to being reborn time and time again, and what for Caius? He couldn’t start over, he’d been the same Pulsian he was over 500 years ago, never changing, never forgetting the things he’d seen or heard. It was…it was unfair. Who said life was fair though? Shaking his head slightly, he grumbled a small sigh that was barely able to be heard. Closing his violet eyes for a moment, he shifted himself to face his back to Yeul rather than actually face her head on. “And…for the sake of a few people, you want to die over and over again? You’d make that sacrifice for all of eternity?” he questioned in a stark voice, even though he already knew the answer.
She was doing a pretty dang good job of making him feel sorrowful, not sympathetic towards those his plan would effect, but the way she felt about it all, now that certainly tugged on the heartstrings of one Caius Ballad. As he started to take a step, he felt her hand catch his arm, and with that he stopped walking, his eyes going downcast, but his mind still a whirlwind of thoughts, wondering what it was he should do, what was the right thing to do? Save Yeul…or let these different cycles take their course? He wanted to protect Yeul and keep her happy, but sometimes sacrifices needed to be made. Hmm. That sounded like something Yeul would say, or at least what she was trying to say, she’d rather sacrifice herself for something else. It was a shame Caius couldn’t listen to his own thoughts, he was still so unsure of what course to take. Whether he disappointed Yeul, or whether he sat back and let her die. There was a major difference between the two options he had there.
“I know it is my burden to bear. I’ve suffered for centuries, just as you have. Do you not wish to be free?” He knew his choices would cause Yeul grief, might even make her upset – that was kind of inevitable at this point – he knew what it was he wanted to do. With a determined look on his face, Caius felt a small bit of regret as he carefully shifted his arm from Yeul’s grip. “You already know what I’m going to do, Yeul. No amount of words can convince me otherwise. I’m doing this for you…for us. No longer do I wish to witness your death, it is time for someone else to bear the burden.” He spoke clearly, strongly, he was determined and his mind was set. There would be no changing his mind. He was going to find Serah and Noel and give them as much hell as he could possibly produce, until it led to Etro dying, being freed from his fate, and Yeul being freed as well. There was no stopping him now, the future had changed, simply by changing his mind, changing his route through time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 845 Muse: Great! Tagged: Yeul! Yeul realized the knowledge that she would rather die continuously then see the unhappiness that would result from certain actions was an idea Caius couldn’t fathom. “Yes, Caius. Please…understand why. For my sake,” she pleaded, yet she lifted her head, proudly nodding, her features of calm assurance. Yes, this was becoming increasingly difficult, this dying and then being reborn. It was forcing her to a point…a breaking point. Still, she courageously held her morals and views on the subject. With Caius’ instability lately, she couldn’t let him see that she had her own doubts. She did have her doubts, her fears, her hardships with her decision to continue dying, but overall, she knew her duty and what she must do. She must go on the way that she was right now. It was the only way! The only way until Noel could fix the timeline. Yes, perhaps she would continue waiting far too long then she deserved, but that was a risk that she was willing to take. He and Serah would prevail. Noel would give her the new world she desired so badly. She knew…because he had promised that he would.
Walking after him, Yeul had caught his arm, stopping him from simply walking through the portal and closing the subject forever. She knew that she might never speak up against his wishes again. Yeul could read her guardian, the man she had spent hundreds of years with as different Yeul’s. Right now she could see the conflict within him. A guardian’s job was to follow his priestess, to keep her from harm and to support her in her endeavors. That was his duty, just as her duty was to serve the goddess. He wanted to do what she wished, she could sense it. Yet he had these other feelings, feelings she could understand, but couldn’t go along with. Yeul would never let chaos overtake the other worlds if she could help it. This was a struggle that had been caused by her own suffering, and she had to bear it along with her other burdens. No one could reason with Caius…no one but herself. That was why it was up to her.
The question he asked her was a tough one. Feeling her arm drop from his arm, Yeul bowed her head, trying to hold her emotions back. So far it was only through her training at hiding her emotions that she was doing so now. “The desire of everyone, the motivating factor in any decision, is the knowledge that freedom might possibly be the result of all their actions,” she started hesitantly, using her round about language style to answer his question. Of course she wanted to be free. Yeul had suffered for so long, that she was just continuously tired of this entire mess. But never would she allow freedom to come through this manner.
She had failed. In her heart, she knew that she could not talk Caius out of the decision he had reached in his heart. The man had become twisted in having to endure his burdens. It had been too much. Too much to watch the flame of life be snuffed out over and over and over again. “Caius…” she tried once more, feeling a pain inside. She wanted a future, Yeul had even dreamed of a time when she could live without the threat of dying. But…this was no way to go about things. The timeline had changed once again, but this time, Caius was to blame. He would march on to try and save her. She couldn’t stop him physically, and words were useless. Now, all she could do was rely on Noel and hope that he and his young friend could save the timeline and the world. And right then her green eyes started to flash oddly. With a sharp intake of breath, Yeul knew what was happening to her as her knees became unsteady beneath her.
She was seeing the future Caius was trying to create.

Caius was stubborn, there was no doubt about it. Decade after decade he’d usually given into Yeul’s words, listened to her and did what was best, he wanted her to be happy with the short life she lived before an unexpected death, but he was finally putting his foot down. There would be no more sitting around as she collapsed to the ground, watching her die and not doing anything about it aside from carrying her to some pool of water to watch her drift from existence, waiting for the next Yeul to take her place. Shaking his head at her words, remaining silent for the next few moments, Caius knew what it was he was supposed to do. He was to guard her life, he was to keep her safe and well protected, if that meant the end of time, then so be it. He’d known Yeul for far too long, cared less about the people who faded from his memories as they passed on through a normal life, they mattered not to him. Yeul was the only thing he was set on protecting.
He knew what this would do, but he wasn’t prepared for it. Caius had let this decision of his completely float over his head, at least the consequences of it. He knew Yeul would be against it one hundred and ten percent, but what else was a man to do? He was falling deeply into despair, he was ready to give up and die, but someone who was immortal and held the heart of Etro…that wasn’t actually possible. Yes, he saw this as a curse, being able to live forever to an extent and see all the pain and horrors people went through, the horrors Yeul went through over the different time periods he’d lived through without even a break. At least Yeul got a chance to start over, though her life was short, it was still given a refreshing start, a clean slate to work with. Caius’ slate was drenched with pain and agony, sins that would not go away ‘in due time’, they’d remain there for as long as he lived, another motivation for going through with his plan, to end time, free himself and Yeul from Etro’s servitude, once that was accomplished, everything would be fine…for them.
Slightly shrugging her words off, Caius still refused to face his younger companion. Hearing his name though, he had no choice but to turn around, he wanted to know what she was feeling, though lately Yeul was becoming very good at masking herself, still, having known her for so long and being able to see the different sides of her over the years, he’d easily be able to pick out what it was she was thinking or feeling at the time. Turning around in time to catch a glimpse of the glimmer in her bright green eyes, Caius’ face dropped from all determination and stubbornness to one of slight concern, but he should’ve been expecting this sometime soon. Still, he never thought to blame himself, having let Noel and Serah go on their journey, he figured they were to blame. Taking a single step to close the gap between Yeul and himself, he was ready to catch her as he could see her knees become unstable, no longer strong enough to hold herself up. With one hand behind her back a few inches, he waited…he was expecting it now. In a moment she would be gone from him once again, and the anger and rage he felt inside would ignite once again.
“Yeul…” he spoke in that deep tone of his as he watched her, waiting for the scene he knew all too well and had seen far too many times, the collapsing of the seeress into her guardian’s arms, waiting to be reborn again and led through the same cycle once again. How many times did Caius have to witness her death before he finally was driven to complete insanity? Well, this seemed to be one time too many. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 762 Muse: Great! Tagged: Yeul! Yeul had failed. Very few and far between came the desire to allow tears to spill from her eyes. This though…Yeul felt that desire to shed tears right now. Shed tears because she had failed. Yeul had failed to make Caius realize what his actions would lead to. She had failed to try to get him to change his course of actions. She had failed him. Caius might never realize where his actions would lead them now. He might never realize just why it was wrong. And then it would all be on her shoulders. The demise of this world was on her shoulders…because she had failed. The thought overwhelmed her, so much so, that she wanted to simply lay down and cry for it. Cry because she was the reason Caius had reached this point of breaking. Cry because she had asked Noel for a new world, and yet she could not even help him. Cry because she was overwhelmed…overwhelmed because she could do nothing about it, but stand by and hope…hope that they would be able fix this. She was unable to do it…and that fact overwhelmed her emotions.
As each Yeul, even with the bad prophecy, Yeul could see that one scene in her head. Yeul could see herself, running into the waiting arms that Noel held out for her. She could see the flowers, felt the sunshine. Every time she was reborn, despite the bad, Yeul could see that image. Each time she did, she felt this hope. She would be reunited with the man that she had become to care for in…a deeper way far in the future. Though she wasn’t his Yeul, she was the same woman in personality, and so she could feel the same things that his Yeul had felt. That vision made her believe that she might be able to one day be free. One day, Noel would fix things, that she could run into his arms and he would wrap her up and tell her that it was all over. That her suffering was over, that the suffering of the people was over. That one small scene kept her going. That one promise for the future.
Yet now, now it was fading. Yeul felt her knees weaken. Swaying, she tried to stay on her feet. She tried to stay as long as she could. If Yeul failed here…Caius would be lost forever. She knew she could not fight her death. No…Etro was taking the life from her, the power, and Yeul could never combat her own death, but before she went, she wished to be able to turn Caius’ mind from the darkness that he had succumbed to. She had to try…she had to try to do her part in saving the world from what was to come. So she locked her knees and tried to stay upright. Green eyes flashed and lightened even more.
The chaos…Yeul saw the events of his actions unfolding. With a little whimper, she collapsed into the arms of her guardian. Yeul didn’t have the strength to move her legs, didn’t have the strength to do anything but lie in his arms and see the events flashing before her eyes. And as soon as it had begun, the vision had ended. Clips, she only saw part of the vision, enough to know what the events would be. This…Caius would destroy everything. Her chest rose and fell as she tried to breathe in. She…she had to try and turn him back. And then the last vision came. It was the same vision of her running into the arms of Noel. Reaching an arm out slowly, up and toward Caius, Yeul rested a hand against his cheek. “Noel…” She begged for Noel with her voice, begging for him to come back, as he faded from her mind. That vision of her, running to him, was fading. Being replaced with visions of chaos. Another little whimper came from her lips, before vision cleared, but dulled. What she saw was Caius there, holding her. She…she had to try and turn his heart before she died. With her soft hand still on his cheek, she tried. “Caius…please…” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words:; 890 Muse:; Great! Another scene Caius knew all too well. He’d watched many Yeul’s collapse to their death due to visions they had seen over time, he didn’t put together that it was his own decision that was causing her this death, but all he could do was blame Etro and the rest of the world for all of this pain that Yeul had to go through time and time again, as well as himself. He could survive living forever, being a guardian of someone and taking care of them, but watching a young girl like Yeul, caring and hoping for a better future…watching her die over and over again had finally thrown Caius into the darkness of the world. His mind wasn’t going to be changed, he knew what it was Yeul wanted from him, but the scene he was witnessing only reinforced his ideas. With violet eyes flickering, watching Yeul’s strength deteriorate right before his eyes, he knew what was coming, he could predict these things easily now…those looks she had, the expressions she made as well as sounds…he could tell when the end was near.
With his hand behind her back, he watched her knees weaken and collapse from under her. Caius had caught her in his arms, kneeling down so she wasn’t completely off the ground. With one knee on the ground as he held her in his arms, Caius had his eyes searching her face, reading her expressions as his own face was practically emotionless, though the hint of pain was there, sadness, and frustration of course. A frown was etched onto his face, brows were furrowed as he remained silent, watching Yeul’s hand raise towards his face, but her words called for someone else. Someone he was willing to eliminate so long as she was set free. Violet eyes lowered as she called for Noel, obviously she wanted him, and how could he blame her? Noel had always been so kind to Yeul…so caring…though he knew nothing of this vision she had about him, he could understand why Noel would be the one she longed to see, but here she was…stuck with Caius, and he was stuck with the madness seeping into his brain even more as time went on.
When Caius heard his name, followed by a please, he lifted his gaze and met her face. It was so painful to watch her struggle to stay alive, to try and talk to him and turn his heart, but already it was as black as night, over the course of what seemed like an eternity, his toleration for love, caring and feelings for other people seemed to deteriorate, until now where it had just vanished completely, aside from his feelings towards Yeul. She was like…the only person he’d gotten to spend all of his life with, time and time again he watched her grow into a charming young woman, though cryptic to many, still, she was just Yeul to him…and watching her dying moments being repeated before his eyes was just sickening. “Yeul…” he spoke quietly in that deep tone of his, trying to find something to say, but really, he knew what she wanted. She wanted him to give up on this crazy idea of freeing her from fate, as well as himself. It was just easier to bear the burden wasn’t it? “Is this really what you want? To live this way forever? Is the pain really worth it?” he questioned, still quietly as his face looked a bit more pained, he’d been expecting her to slump lifelessly into his arms, but she was still holding on with what little thread of life she had left in her body.
“It’s not worth it to me. I value you life, your sanity over anyone else’s, if you were in my shoes…would you not want to do the same to save someone you cared for?” The best ‘what if’ he could come up with was just about to spill out. “What if it were Noel dying over and over? Would you not want to save him?” he asked her, almost feeling envy and bitterness towards his Pulsian comrade from the Dying World. There wasn’t much more to say, Caius’ mind couldn’t be changed, nor Yeul’s. They were both set on their own ideas most of the time, this was one of those moments. All he could really do now was wait…wait until she did pass on from this life to the next so that he could carry her lifeless body towards some form of water and watch her fade from existence just as he had done countless times over the years, a routine he didn’t want to keep up with. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 887 Muse: Great! The pain was clutching at her, yet Yeul suppressed showing any indication of such as she watched Caius. She had been strong for so long. She had taken her death in stride each time, knowing when she would die, and being unable to stop it, unwilling. A seeress could never run away from her own death. Yeul accepted that, even when she hated the thought of it happening. She never tried to fight it, never combated what would happen in the future. But now she held on. This death had not supposed to happen. She had seen her death previously, and it had been some ways in the future. But this…this was a result purely from Caius having changed the future. He was what was causing her to suffer and die at the present. Never before would she have told him that. Yeul never complained about her lot in life, never tried to get pity for what she had been chosen for, but right now…it might be the only way. Perhaps the only way to get him to realize where his actions were leading, was to tell him.
Reaching up and gripping his hand, Yeul heard his question and nodded slightly. “Rather would I suffer continuously then to know…I caused suffering.”, she whispered out as pain gripped her body, tensing in his arms as she struggled against it. She wouldn’t fight it in the end, but she would fight it for the time. Just for a time. Hopefully to turn him back from his decision. To turn him away from his thoughts to destroy the world and all human kind just for her. Never would she want this. Noel could understand what she wanted…and yet, he could not. How could he be so blind to her desires? All she wanted was to be sure that people got the joy and happiness that they craved. If she had to keep dying, then she would carry that burden for all of time. She couldn’t, though, if Caius tried for the future that he wanted. A world with no future. No happiness. Yeul wouldn’t want that sacrifice for herself.
Of course, he stated that he could not allow that and gave her another scenario. Clasping his hand with her own tiny one, she peered up into his eyes with pleading eyes. It would be hard, granted. She wasn’t sure if she could watch one person she cared for suffer continuously, especially Noel. A future Yeul, she knew, viewed him as more than a friend. Perhaps it was love that humans shared that this future Yeul shared with Noel. Whatever it was, Yeul knew that she felt a close bond with the Pulsian man that was now intertwined with their destiny. To watch him suffer would be hard, but it was something that she would do if he wished it. Reaching her other hand over toward where her right was clasping his hand, she tried to cover his large hand with both her smaller ones. “If he desired such, I would never be able to go against that wish.”
Lifting her earnest, searching gaze to his eyes then, she remembered what she had just envisioned. She had…to try. Her eye lids were heavy, hard to keep open, yet she tried hard. “This isn’t the way I’m supposed to die,” she whispered, eyes drooping, relaxing against Caius’ firm armor, her cheek resting on her shoulder. “Your resolve,” she continued slowly as it became harder and harder to get out what she wanted to tell him. “You changed…the timeline.”, she said then, her hands weakening from the tight clasp she had held his hand with moments before. She was trying to relay the message that he had caused this death that she was going through. “My death, has been caused prematurely by that future changing. A foreshadowing of events to come.”, she whispered out, trying hard to hold on until she could tell him that. Still, the life was draining away from her even as she fought it. ’Etro…only a few moments more. Please.’ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words:;878 Muse:; Great! Damn Yeul and the need to keep people safe…
Could she not see how much this pained him? He’d been through centuries of seeing this, and although it was very selfish, these things tended to take a toll on someone, he wasn’t sure he could take watching Yeul die in his arms every so often anymore. Caius let out a sigh, he wasn’t sure where to take this…he wanted to protect Yeul, that was his job as a guardian, but sometimes…you had to bend to meet the needs of that person you tried so hard to protect. If Yeul wanted to die over and over again, that wasn’t really protecting her was it? So, she wanted him to not be a good guardian for her? He wasn’t going to allow that though…he’d been gifted – or cursed – with the job of protecting her forever, remembering the things she’d seen over the many years of life he’d had…but as all the memories were clear as day…he simply knew the cause of all of these deaths, altering the timeline, and no matter what he did, the timeline would always change…what was he to do?
Gripping Yeul’s hand, Caius continued to hold onto her, close to the ground as he knew that soon he would be carrying her off, lifeless, just as he always did when this happened. There was no stopping it, she was a seeress, and unfortunately, that came with a huge price. She couldn’t go out of her way to try and save herself…but maybe Caius could? Most likely not, she didn’t wish for him to change the future, to change her fate…so long as people were safe and there wasn’t suffering, she seemed to be content. Hell, Caius wasn’t sure what to do anymore. He had it decided that he was going to change all of this, but his heart…the heart of chaos that beat beneath his chest, it was telling him to just give in to Yeul’s wishes and simply leave things as they were, the more tampering he did with the timeline…the more Yeuls that would die because of him.
Trying to turn the tables, to put Noel into the situation to get her idea on it…for her to understand the pain he was feeling, Caius looked to Yeul with hopeful yet very saddened eyes, still clutching her hand with one of his, keeping her upright with his other arm as he eased himself to sit on the ground completely, making it possibly more comfortable for Yeul. Who could be comfortable when you were on the brink of death? The next bits of things Yeul had to say…those were what hurt. It had been his choice to go after Noel and Serah, that ultimately changed the timeline…something Yeul had to see, and it was that vision she had that shortened her life, he hadn’t thought much of it at the time, it wasn’t like he could do much about the choices he made, how he felt…but watching this pain and suffering from both ends needed to stop, did it not? Shaking his head slightly and feeling Yeul’s grasp around his hand weaken, he simply made his tighter. “Forgive me, Yeul.” His deep voice spoke quietly, and honestly.
There was no one to blame but himself, but even that fueled the anger raging beneath his skin, she shouldn’t have to see the changes within the timeline…if that was gone then…the ideas just needed to stop. He needed to remain with Yeul calmly, he needed to do what he could to keep her pleased even in her last moments. “You wish for this horror to unfold over and over, so long as the world doesn’t see pain and suffering…I…will try to stand by your words, Yeul. I cannot promise what will happen with Noel and Serah trudging through the timeline…I simply hope that everything gets worked out, truly.” Words of honesty, but Caius could easily be swayed, just by watching this…he wasn’t changing his resolve…he knew how the future would end up no matter which road anyone took…it was almost inevitable…the world would fall to its knees…if not for Yeul and Caius himself…then for revenge against Etro. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 813 Muse: ;-; Tagged: Yeul Wearing: His usual Listening To: Sad stuff >> Notes: ;___;

Yeul felt honesty in his voice when he asked for forgiveness. No tears threatened her eyes as she looked up at him, green eyes wide and unblinking, searching his eyes. The eyes were the gateway to the heart. That was what she had heard before in her life, and if that was actually the case, Yeul was now trying to see into his heart. She had been beside this man for hundreds of years, putting her faith and trust that he would protect her. And he had, but Yeul had thought she had known him, until he had started acting unstable. After he’d started to change, Yeul had no idea anymore just what it was that he was becoming. She still didn’t know. It would seem as if no part of him was the Caius she had spent so much time with. Yet she could see glimpses every so often, reminding her of the man she had come to think of as somewhat of a father. It broke her heart to see him like he was now, so poisoned with thoughts of destroying everything for her, so when these moments came, she felt a vast amount of relief.
If she had to say, Yeul would think that he actually meant what he said about her forgiving him for what he had done. Nodding slowly, Yeul reached up and slid her hand against his cheek bone again, a gentle smile lifting onto her lips. “I…cannot forgive you.”, she finally whispered out truthfully, stroking his cheek with her soft fingertips. “It's not enough for me to do so, Caius. My forgiveness means nothing when the lives of everyone is at stake. You can only attain true repentance by taking back what you had been going to do. Only you can gain forgiveness for this, Caius, it’s in your hands,” she ended in a desperate plea. If only he would listen and actually try. She felt emotions overwhelm her, wanted to try and help, but didn’t know what else she could possibly do to help. Yet she felt as if it was all her fault that things were the way they were at the moment. The weight crushed her at times.
But her hope was short lived. While he stated his speech, she knew… She knew that no matter what he was telling her, he still put his resolve and faith in tipping the scale and allowing chaos to spill out onto Gran Pulse from Valhalla. She had still failed, even in her best efforts. She closed her eyes to ward off the pain, unsure of what to do. She felt as if she needed to try something else, but she was at a loss for thinking what it was that she could possibly do. What…what else could she try? He had resisted her on every turn. Why would anything else she said change anything? Sorrow tore at her heart, and she clasped his hands in her own weakly, wishing she could hold onto the promise he was giving her. But it was a false promise. “Noel and Serah, they are attempting to do what is right, Caius. If that means I’m to continue dying without an end to the cycle, then I will accept that willingly.”
Tucking her head into his chest and allowing her body to relax slightly, she took in ragged breathes, all the while feeling disappointment tug at her heart. Still, as she always could, Yeul could feel the comfort he gave to her in her time of need, and accepted it willingly. He was wrong, yes. He would continue trying to allow chaos to spill over, yes, but he was still her guardian, and she would continue to cling to him in her time of dying. Raising a hand slowly, she clasped at his chest, where his heart beat, secure in his arms. “Rid yourself of the hatred, Caius, before it’s too late. In your quest to make things better for me, you will destroy my soul bit by bit.”, she warned weakly. “The new dawn is dark, but there is still time…” With one more pain seizing her body, Yeul went ridged in his arms, tense while she clung to him. It was time. Etro had allowed her this much time. “Noel,” she whimpered once more, a plea for him to fix the wrong that was happening, before her hand fell from where it had been clasping his chest, head rolled back, showing her face. As death had consumed her, Yeul had lost her peaceful face, instead it had been a look full of regret and sorrow, the trail of a single tear down her cheek.

The end for Yeul was coming, Caius knew it, she knew it…it was…inevitable. Caius had seen the timeline, the future he was going to create no matter which path he took. Anything Serah and Noel did, it would all lead to the exact same thing, sooner or later the Goddess, Etro, would die and Valhalla would invade Gran Pulse, creating a world where time no longer existed. Guilt, it was never an emotion Caius was good with, he looked away from the dying seeress in his arms, feeling his grip on her hand tighten, he wanted forgiveness, he wanted to be free…but they were all things he couldn’t obtain. They were simply dreams, unobtainable dreams that seemed so close, yet so far away. He wasn’t just going to sit down and accept fate like this, he wanted to escape his fate…he didn’t want to live forever and watch this unfold every so often. It was driving him mad, whether Yeul liked it or not, fate’s course for Etro had already been decided when his peace of mind flew out the window.
Giving her a few words, attempting to abide by her wishes, Caius knew he couldn’t promise anything. He wasn’t promising anything, he was simply going to attempt to please her, even when she wasn’t around. With gave her a sorrowful look as she spoke, he hated seeing her suffering. “No matter what they do…the future has already been decided.” He spoke lowly, darkly and bluntly, as much as it hurt for someone to hear or even say, there was nothing anyone could do to make Etro’s fate any different than it was right now.
Hearing her pleading words, to rid himself of the hatred he had inside…it was difficult to hear, but he knew he had it. There was a burning fire within his soul that just held nothing but rage and hatred for Etro, for his life, and for everything that made him what he was today. He used to be a pretty calm and easy going guy, a strong fighter and a guardian to the seeress, a l’cie bound to the fal’cie to protect Yeul way back in time, but now he was cursed with this focus forever. Everything that made him this way…he hated it. He hated the fal’cie, he hated the curse of being a seeress for Yeul, he hated Etro and the so called ‘blessings’ she bestowed on him. Feeling Yeul reach and grab at his chest, she was weak, he could tell, and he kept his thoughts and feelings silenced for now, feeling a sinking in his heart as he watched her fade, it was like a mudslide. She’d been pretty well off a few minutes ago, then all of this had happened. Her health, her expressions and emotions…they’d dropped dramatically, and watching someone fall from cloud nine that fast…it was like watching a bomb drop, all you had to do now was wait for the explosion, the explosion from Caius that is.
With her arm dropping, her last whimper of a word – for Noel of course – Caius closed his eyes. There was no life left to this Yeul, it was all routine by now. He felt an array of emotions work their way through his chest. He sucked in a breath, exhaling and opening his eyes, blinking slightly as silently his eyes had watered. This was the true pain of it all, this right here was the burden Caius had to bear. Shaking his head slightly as he held Yeul tightly close to him, a tear falling and landing on the seeress’ cheek, he gazed down at her. “Only I can gain forgiveness. Forgiveness is not what I seek anymore. What I seek…is an ending to this madness.” Rising up to his feet and keeping Yeul in his arms, he started off, walking through the still glowing portal, ready to let Yeul drift on to the afterlife, to start a new cycle in due time. Between now and then…his plots and plans for Etro’s demise came quicker and more natural. Someone was going to pay the price…it was going to be soon, and little to their knowledge, Serah and Noel were helping him do it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 808 Muse: Great! But sad!
