Today was the day.
Nine felt so confident today, he was on cloud….nine, no pun intended of course. He had showered extra long today, made sure his hair was perfect in its spiky do. He had his uniform on properly, or…well like normal and he had a case of breath mints tucked in his pocket. After getting huge laughs from King, Nine exited his dorm with no looks of frustration, even though his roommate had just laughed hard at him, almost to the point where the mulleted man’s lungs would’ve exploded had he laughed a little harder. Trotting down the hallways as he watched students retreating to their dorms, to the library, and away from the class rooms. That was Nine’s destination, but not the class zero class room. He was going to go speak with a particular professor, a very pretty brunette to absolutely every male within the school. Nine of course was good looking, he figured if anyone had a shot with the professor, it would be him, that was where all this confidence came from.
How wrong he was going to be pretty soon.
Standing outside the class room door where Emina Hanaharu would be on the other side, Nine took in a deep breath and held it for a moment, running a hand through his hair before popping the breath mints from his pocket and placing two in his mouth while exhaling. After pocketing his secret stash of mints, he pressed one hand against the door and entered the class room, pushing the door with ease as his bright blue eyes began to look around. His eyes gazed upon empty seats, a neat looking room, and as he continued to look, his eyes settled on a brunette behind a desk, curly hair, those pretty eyes, and those b- …those beautiful eyes. Yes, eyes, that was it. Nine cleared his throat a bit as he swaggered up towards the desk of one Emina Hanaharu, a cheeky grin on his face as got down the aisle, pressing a hand against her desk and leaning his head to the side a bit, his tone was polite but it had its usual rough touch to it. “Emina, I was wonderin’ if I could ask ya a question, ya know, since yer a professor and what not, I’m sure ya can answer me.” He said with that over confident tone of his. Nine really did have high hopes, and soon he was going to fall, crash and burn due to his over confidence.
Shifting himself a bit so that he was leaning his lower back against the desk, his arms folded across his chest as he gazed over his shoulder at the brunette, that cheeky grin still on his face as he looked rather thoughtful, as if he had an education related question. Moving a hand to tap the bottom of his chin, he finally spoke up again. “See, I have a problem, and I didn’t know who else to turn to. Kurasame and I definitely don’t see eye to eye, and King is too busy with Queenie, so here’s the problem. I have two tickets to the cinema, and no one to go with me.” He said as he pulled two tickets to a movie out from his pocket and placed them on the desk, sliding one over towards Emina as he moved around to face her fully, waggling his eyebrows a bit to see if she’d get the hint that he was asking her to take the ticket, to go on a date with him…King really did have a good reason for nearly choking to death on air from laughing too hard, this was sad, just…pathetic.

Emina sat at her desk, in an empty classroom, as she looked over some papers before her class started, humming slightly to herself. She was out of her commanding uniform and into her comfortable outfit of a white shirt, pants, and gloves with her hair staying in its usual ponytail as her long bangs fell down over her eyes. It was just turning out to be a beautiful and normal day of teaching classes. The day was going by fairly smoothly with no major incidents that she had been aware of. No students had coming running for her, saying that Kazusa had kidnapped another classmate for experiments and she was taking that as a good sign. She would much rather be out with the cadets, but she didn't mind being behind a desk once in a while, and this was one of those times.
Her head snapped up at the sound of the doors opening, and saw Nine walked down towards her. A small smile came across her face as she stood up as he was coming down the steps toward her desk. "Nine. What a pleasant surprise. What can I help you with?" A simple question that she would have asked any other student that came into her classroom. Knowing him and how he could be, along with having Kurasame as a professor and commander, she figured he would need some sort of help academically. Something that she would be more than happy to help him with. But, that wasn't the case at all. Things got awkward. Really awkward. At least for her anyway. By the way Nine was acting and speaking, he seemed to be quite confident in himself, and the way it was sounding and looking, it didn't seem to just be a simple question about schoolwork that she could answer easily. So, she did the only thing she could do at the moment. Smile and nod.
"Well, Nine, I will try to answer your question as best as I can.”
She figured that was enough indication for him to continue on and he did just that. As Nine turned around, looking back at her over his shoulder, and trying to look and act cool, she put her hands behind her back and fisted them tight. He spoke about Kura and then his fellow classmate, Queen, which was making her wonder what it was exactly that he was trying to get to. And then he pulled out the movie tickets. Her eyebrows skyrocketed up and her smile instantaneously fell in shock as he slid the ticket towards her and she stared down at it. He wasn't...was he? Was he trying to ask her out...on a date? He did know that she was going out with Izana, right? Well, obviously not with what he was asking.
"Wow...Nine...I...don't know what to say...”
She really didn't know what to say. A student, even a Class Zero student, asking a professor was a bit unusual and didn't happen all that often. But, how was she supposed to tell him that she was going out with a soldier, and the fact that she had plans with that soldier the very night he was asking her to go to the movies with her. Oh Etro, this was tough. She tried to smile at him, as her eyes darted from his confident face, down to the ticket on her desk, but it just turned into a frown as her eyebrows furrowed and fell. So much for an easy academic question that would be easy to answer.
She let out a big sigh and crossed her arms, before looking up at the hopeful teenager, and mustering the best sympathetic smile she could make. “I don't mean to disappoint you, Nine, but I am afraid I will have to decline your offer. I'm sorry.”

This was Nine on an extremely good day. He was as happy as could be, he was going to try and win a date over with Emina, the most beautiful instructor of them all here at the academy. Now, he was just being daring, actually asking her out. Most boys at the academy simply day dreamed about her, or stared in awe at her beauty in class, whatever it is that gained their interest, but Nine was probably the first student to actually ask her on a date. How sad…or exciting, whatever it was you wanted to call it. He saw that smile on her face, so nice…so loving…so…Emina. With his own grin, he appreciated her chipperness, willing to answer his question as best as she could, well, a simple yes would be nice, then he’d really be pretty damn happy and able to go on his merry way instead of lingering around the classrooms after all classes were dismissed for the day.
The moment he opened his mouth, his ego inflated about ten times its original size. He was talking as if he were smooth, charming and all that other good stuff. He had a wide grin on his face as he played it cool. Talking about the movies and how his friends were busy, he subtly – yet…not so subtly – asked Emina out on a date, placing the tickets on her desk and just giving her the best grin he could, he knew he was good looking…who could resist the bright blue eyes anyways? This was going to go so well! Nine knew it. Emina was going to say yes, with how nice she had been when he came in…she was GOING to say YES. He knew it, he was a genius, this was the best idea ever and he couldn’t wait to rub it in King’s face that he got a date with Emina, the oh so loved instructor of all of the academy. Yeah, people better stop laughing at him right now, because Nine…well, he was officially the coolest guy in all of Oriens history. At least….that’s what he thought.
The words that came to his ears though…it was like glass shattering. Nine flinched only slightly as his total look of confidence washed away into one of confusion and astonishment. Emina had…turned him down? But…but but…he was so confident! He didn’t say anything offensive or stupid, had he? Blinking for a second, he cleared his throat and put that confident look on his face again, giving Emina an understanding look. “Alright alright, so maybe another time then? What would work best for you, Emina?” he asked politely, adding a sincere and almost sweet grin to his face, instead of the rough and rugged bad boy grin he usually had. Little did he know that Emina was dating Izana, besides…who would want to…date Izana? The older brother of one Machina Kunagiri…with Emina? Well that was absolutely ridiculous, Emina would rather be with someone as sexy and charming and well behaved as Nine versus stupid soldier boy Kunagiri.
Yeah…nope.

Emina knew for a fact that a good portion of the male student body had a crush on her. It wasn’t that hard to figure out when they were all staring at you during a lecture or seminar, or in the girls case, glaring at you. She didn’t mind it. It wasn’t like she was trying to hog the attention for herself, it was just the way things were and there was nothing she could do about it. She most certainly couldn’t just tell them to stop or ask the Headmaster to make them stop. It was human nature to look at things, and she didn’t want to stop human nature. So, she didn’t care for it. After all, she was sure that no one would try and come up to her and ask her out. She was a teacher and a commander. It would be insane for her to go out with one of students, and it would be completely unprofessional. At least, until today.
Emina stared back at Nine, her smile now replaced with a confused and worried look. He had actually asked her out. Her. A professor. A commander. A taken woman. This wouldn’t end well, she was sure of that. The only thing she was worried about now was how she was going to break the news to him that this wasn’t going to happen. She had never thought a male student would have the courage to ask her out, so she had never prepared a way to turn them own easily. She was now kicking herself for not doing so, just in case. And here she was. That was life for you. She tried to give it to him simply and as nicely as she could, but she could easily see him flinch back at being turned down. But, she knew Nine. He was fighter. And it looked like even in this confrontation, he would stay true to that and go down fighting. It was just too bad that she would have to defeat him no matter what. He regained his confident persona, and tried to act cool again. Oh dear.
She kept quiet as he tried again, but could only sigh and then think in contemplation as what she should say before trying once more to make him understand. “I’m sorry, Nine, but you have to understand that I must decline. It isn’t a matter of whether I am available, or keeping Kura ‘off of your back.’ I am already with someone.” She reached across the desk and placed a gloved hand on his shoulder and gave him a small smile. “I’m truly sorry but there are plenty of girls out there who I am sure would be happy to go out with you. Perhaps you should ask one of them?” She knew this was going to make him feel absolutely terrible, but there was no other way around it. This was the way it had to be, and she was sure that there was at least one girl in the Peristylium who had her eye out for him. She could only hope he wouldn’t be too torn up about this.

This was just a disaster waiting to happen. No, it was already a disaster. Nine’s confidence and the way this thing was going was becoming a huge rollercoaster…except with no ups, only downs. A steep downhill roll…and of course, he was going to crash and burn here pretty quick. He tried to play it cool, to be as smooth as silk really, but Nine knew it was going to be a challenge to win over the professor, he was only eighteen, but hey, he was legal wasn’t he? Weirder things have happened before….like some nineteen year old blonde girl dating an old man…this was hardly that, this was totally cool, but…still, a complete disaster in the making. When being shot down, Nine never took rejection lightly, it made him feel like a failure, and being a failure in this field was unacceptable, especially with such a pretty woman like Emina! Gah! Why was this so hard? Maybe King really did have a right to laugh at him earlier…
Nine tried to recover, offering a different date, as in a different day, but his quickly recovered confidence was then shattered again. Emina might as well have dropkicked him across the room, hit him with a chair or better yet, told him his lance was so big because he was overcompensating for something. That would’ve been a real ‘below the belt’ hit. Blinking for a second, his face completely void of emotion, he had to think of her words very carefully for a moment. She…was already involved with someone. Oh my god. This was just…the worst thing ever. Nine was hitting on and asking out a taken woman. How smooth was that? He stood there with that blank expression on his face for quite a few seconds, shaking his head slightly and letting a look of…something, torn between distressed and almost nervousness cross his face as his knees felt like buckling. “Yer involved with someone already…uh…I…” he was tripping over his own unrecognizable slang-rough-ridden words. Clearing his throat and gaining only a little bit of composure, he stood up straight and did his best to speak clearly. “Sorry.”
WOW NINE.
That was all he could come up with. How clever, how smooth. Still, his dreams of ever taking the beautiful Emina Hanaharu were now crushed…crushed into tiny bite sized pieces that could never be repaired. Wishing the floor would open up a hole and swallow him up, Nine just felt like a puppy dog, wanting to walk away with his head hanging low and his tail between his legs. Rubbing the back of his neck, Nine decided to take it one step further, to ask a question that wasn’t all that reasonable to be asking, but this was Nine we’re talking about…would this really shock her? “Who’s the uh…lucky guy?” he asked hesitantly before actually meeting her face again, not wanting to think about those ‘other girls’ who would be happy to go on a date with him. Who was he supposed to turn his gaze to now? Kayla? The school creeper? Well…he did have to admit, Seven was pretty and stuff…but he’d never taken the time to think about her that way…and he probably wasn’t going to start now that he’d been rejected. Wonderful, King was really going to have a good reason to laugh now. Nine couldn’t wait for the laughs, the jokes and of course…the humiliation of seeing Emina in the school for…ever. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 694 Muse: Great once it got rolling! Emina wasn’t sure what exactly she could do at this moment in time. Nine was sure to be crushed learning that not only would she be able to accompany him to...well, anything, but the fact that she was also going out with someone already. She maybe a woman, but she understood that both genders were hit hard by rejection, though men tried to hide it better than women. And with the way that Nine was reacting to what she was saying, based off of his facial expressions, he wasn’t taking any of this news very well. At all. This would all be so much easier if only there was a simple way to say no without all of the crushing words, but that wasn’t how reality worked, unfortunately.
Nine recovered from the first rejection, and tried once again to see if she would go out with him. She had to figure out a nice way of saying no to him once again and then add in the fact that she was currently seeing someone. That someone being Izana. But, she knew there wasn’t an easy. Everyone knew their wasn’t an easy way to say no to a proposition like this and that was the reason why her stomach was doing flips and had fallen to the floor. She was prepared for all kinds of situations being a teacher and the cadet commander, but she hadn’t been prepared for something like this. So, she did the best that she could to tell him that she was with someone and giving the cliché ending that there was someone out there for him. It just wasn’t her.
As soon as she finished she could see the metaphorical glass shattering and falling to the ground as Nine’s face went from a confident grin to blank stare of confusion and disbelief. She did her best to give him her own sympathetic smile but it failed and she just stood there with a worried frown. It only got worse as Nine seemed to now be shaking his head slightly and his blank stare turned into a depressed and grievous expression. Oh god. Yup, she had broken him. He repeated what he said, most likely trying to come to terms with what she had just said. As he stumbled over his own words, and continued to stay in his own version of shock, she could only nod her head in affirmation.
Silence took over for a few more seconds and then Nine asked the question that Emina was sure he would. Who it was she was going out with at the moment. She knew the answer immediately to the question, but had to think about it for a second so that she could try and come up with a good way of saying it. In the end, she just went with the blunt answer. “Izana Kunagiri. He’s a soldier. I’m sorry you have to hear this, Nine.” She hoped Nine would be able to move on from this, But, from the way he was right now, that didn’t seem too likely.

This was just…to be quite frank, heartbreaking. Nine could almost hear the faint sound of laughter at his failure here. Standing there like some silent and shock ridden teenager, which he was, he simply kept his eyes glazed over, not wanting to look pained or anything, that was probably worse than the rejection itself. The reaction that came with it. He was probably making a fool of himself as it was, and Emina probably couldn’t wait for him to leave the room so she could laugh. The entire world was going to laugh at him. With a bit of hesitation, he wasn’t sure what to say, how to get past these jumbled words of his that weren’t making any sense whatsoever. That was Nine on a normal basis though, no shocker there. All he had to do was keep a tight grip on what was left of his pride and try to maintain some sort of civilized composure through the rest of his time in this awful classroom.
With a bit more hesitation, he’d asked the question of who the lucky guy was. The name he heard wasn’t what he was expecting. His eyes widened a fraction as his eyebrows raised almost in confusion, but he quickly recovered from that too. Izana Kunagiri…that was…Machina’s brother! Damn it! God damn the entire world. Nine felt like exploding on the inside, but he kept it all really…covered. How nice was that? The one time he wanted to be stoic like other people he knew, and he actually succeeded! Rocking back his weight a bit and placing a hand under his chin, he shrugged. He was sure he’d seen the Izana guy around once or twice, didn’t have a chocobo named some weird funky name? Cheerio or something? Whatever, the bird didn’t matter, but still…this was just humiliating. He wanted this to go no further than this room…but that was unlikely, after all, it seemed that this school had eyes and ears built into the walls.
“Uh…I don’t remember him all that well, but…sorry. I didn’t know?” He said with almost a questionable tone before shaking his head, as if to disregard the uncertainty in his voice. “I can only hope that this won’t go further than this room, mmk? We teenagers have a reputation t’ protect, ya know.” He said almost in a grim tone, feeling almost bitter and unwanted. But whatever, he’d find someone someday after he stopped moping about his losses here, but whatever. All he wanted to do now was run outside, throw something or just keep on running until he got so tired he passed out. At least then his mind would be on other things? “I’m gonna get goin’ now…I suppose. Have fun with your…Izzy ‘er whatever he’s called.” He said with a brief wave of his hand, turning and taking his leave…ready to his the training field and launch a few javelins across the entire courtyard, if not all the way to Concordia. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 615 Muse: Good! Well, Emina was sure of it now. Nine was sure to be depressed and heartbroken and just...gone for at least a while with the way he was acting now. His eyes were glazed over and he wasn’t showing any sort of emotion. He was more than likely trying to keep his pride and dignity up because if anybody, probably also including her, saw him break apart, he wouldn’t be seen the same way again. He probably wasn’t expecting be rejected by someone like her, with the amount of pride that was contained within him. Well, that was men for you, whether they were teenagers or adults, they were always trying to act tough even in the face of rejection. She wanted to give some sort of advice to the spear-wielder, but she was sure it wouldn’t help anymore since she was the main problem for him being this way.
Nine then asked the question that Emina knew was coming and she wondered how he would take idea. It was just natural curiosity. Letting out a breath, and giving a small, apologetic smile, she told him Izana’s name and watched as the shock registered across his face. Obviously, that hadn’t been the answer he had been expecting...now that the Kunagiri’s were on her mind, she remembered that Izana’s younger brother, Machina, had transferred into Class Zero. Well, that just made this conversation a little bit more awkward, though Emina wondered if that was even possible with how this conversation was even going. Nine’s slightly shocked expression turned into a stoic one and she couldn’t help the curiosity once more of wondering what it could be that he was thinking right now. She had just rejected him and told him that she was going out with one his classmates older brother. Surely he was banging his head against a mental wall and kicking himself. Yeah, that sounded like something Nine would do.
Finally, Nine said something and she allowed her apologetic smile to turn into an all-knowing one. “It is alright, Nine.” She didn’t continue any further on than that for fear of making it worse. Instead, she just continued to listen him going on, nodding as he spoke. “Of course not. No one has to know nor will they know that this conversation ever happened. My lips are sealed.” And if she did find out that this got out herself she would find the person who listened in and gave the a lesson in not eavesdropping. A lesson that would involve a lot of running, and other such activities. Sometimes it was good to be the cadet commander. She nodded once more as he said that he was going to leave and she hoped dearly that he didn’t beat himself up about this too much. But, all she could do was give him another apologetic smile. “Alright, Nine.” She didn’t dare correct him on the fact that he said Izana’s name wrong. “Just remember, there is someone out there for you.” All she could do now was wave and hope that nothing ended up too destroyed.
