Kain Highwind
"I've no wish to erase my past."
Custom Title: Holy Dragoon Age: twenty two Gender: male Family: Ricard Highwind (father/deceased), King of Baron (adoptive father/deceased) Race: human Sexual Orientation: heterosexual Home World: Baron Alignment: Neutral Job: Dragoon Items: n/a Accessories: n/a Appearance Kain has pale blue eyes, long straight blond hair (which is often tied up in a pony tail) and fair skin. Obviously a handsome man. He is quite tall and has a lean body, but is quite athletic due to being a soldier and a Dragoon. He is light-weight and can make high jumps, even use the wind for his purposes. His Dragoon armour reminds of a dragon. His new Holy Dragoon armour is light coloured and his helm is replaced by a half circlet.
Personality: Kain looks like a cold and distant man at first glance. He really doesn't get close to anyone and often hides his feelings on matters and people. He is somewhat of a mysterious person, yet he has the dream of following after his father's steps in becoming a Dragoon.
He usually has a serious attitude, also doesn't have much of a sense of humour. Kain is also confident in himself, stubborn and certainly arrogant. He may look down onto his opponents without thinking much. His best friend Cecil is also his rival and Kain has hidden feelings toward Cecil's love interest; Rosa. While being manipulated, he fails to show loyalty to them
History: Kain was born in Baron to the Commander of the Dragoons, Richard Highwind. His father was particularly active, but died suddenly one day while Kain was still young, sprouting rumors that he may have been assassinated. In The After Years, Kain recounts that he used to hate his father for how strict he was. Kain was raised with Cecil by the King of Baron. Initially, Kain disliked Cecil, since the king treated Cecil more like a son than Kain himself. It was often Rosa who would stop the two from fighting. The three eventually became friends, and Kain became Cecil's rival and developed romantic feelings for Rosa, although she and Cecil were likewise enamored.
The king wanted Kain to become a Dark Knight like Cecil was, but Kain wished to follow in his father's footsteps down the path of the Dragoon in order to defend the castle. Kain cared for his father's dragon, who grew weak but still faithfully awaited his master's return. The Dragoons were on the verge of disbanding after Kain's father's death, but reformed when they saw the devotion of both the dragon and Kain. Kain was eventually appointed the Commander of the Dragoons.
As Final Fantasy IV begins, Kain tries to defend Cecil after Cecil was discharged from the command of the Red Wings. Cecil is ordered to deliver a ring to the village of Mist, and slay the Eidolon Mist Dragon in the Misty Valley that blocks the way. Kain is ordered to accompany him. The next morning, Cecil and Kain depart for Mist. They pass through the Mist Cave and dispatch the Mist Dragon. When they arrive at the village, the ring they were supposed to deliver activates, and bombs are summoned to burn the village.
Cecil and Kain find a little girl and her dead mother, the Summoner who conjured the Mist Dragon who died when the Eidolon was slain. While Cecil and Kain discuss the fact that they must have defeated the Mist Dragon and thus accidentally killed her mother, the girl blames them for her death. Cecil and Kain offer to take her to safety after pledging not to follow any more orders from the king, but she does not listen. She summons Titan and causes an earthquake that sparks an avalanche, which separates Mist from the rest of the valley.
After this event, Kain's whereabouts are unknown. It is assumed, however, that he returned to Baron, where the mage Golbez was named new Lord Captain of the Red Wings. Kain is appointed Golbez's second-in-command, although it is unknown if he did this of his own will or if he was already manipulated. Either way, Kain eventually becomes subjected to Golbez's mind control. During an attack on Fabul to seize their Crystal, Kain betrays Cecil, knocking him down. However, before he can deliver the finishing blow, Rosa enters and Kain hesitates when she calls out to him. Golbez arrives and kidnaps Rosa, and Kain takes the Crystal, leaving Cecil alive.
Kain is assigned to guard Rosa in the Tower of Zot, a task he does faithfully in order to remain near Rosa and keep her safe from any harm one of Golbez's other minions would inflict upon her. He requests Golbez give him another chance to defeat Cecil, but Golbez refuses and sends one of his Archfiends instead - Scarmiglione. When the second Archfiend Cagnazzo, who was impersonating the King of Baron, is slain, Golbez has already stolen the airship fleet. As Golbez ponders retrieving the last Crystal, Kain suggests they exchange Rosa for it after having Cecil get it for them. Golbez agrees, and Kain delivers Cecil the ultimatum - deliver them the Earth Crystal, or Rosa perishes.
Cecil follows through on the deal and Kain takes him to the Tower of Zot. At the summit, Golbez decides not to exchange the Crystal for Rosa. As a result, Tellah attacks Golbez out of vengeance for his daughter Anna, and casts Meteor on him. This not only weakens Golbez, but also released Kain from Golbez's control. Kain rejoins Cecil's party, and accompanies him to rescue Rosa. He reveals his secret love for Rosa and apologizes. Rosa forgives him and invites him to fight alongside them, to which Kain agrees. However, Barbariccia, the Archfiend of Air and a seeming rival of Kain, attacks and has to be defeated before they can escape the tower. Rosa casts the Teleport spell and the party is warped to Cecil's room in Baron
Cecil's party is worried, as Golbez now possesses all four Crystals. However, Kain speaks of the Dark Crystals hidden in the Underworld. These Crystals had only been rumored to exist, but Golbez knows of these rumors. Kain explains that Golbez needs the Crystals to open "the way to the Moon". Cecil decides his party has to head underground to protect the remaining Crystals. Kain shows Cecil the Key of Magma, which could be used to enter the Underworld. The party eventually enters the underground and reunites with Rydia following a confrontation with Golbez, where he is defeated but escapes with a Crystal, leaving only one remaining.
The party heads for the Cavern containing the final Crystal and open the sealed door. They retrieve the Crystal and return to the surface, but Golbez calls out to Kain possessing him once again. Kain steals the Crystal and flees. With all eight Crystals, the Tower of Babil is activated and the Giant of Babil is summoned. After a journey to the Moon, Cecil and his allies destroy the giant, and the Lunarian Fusoya reveals Golbez as Cecil's brother, under the control of Zemus. Kain is again freed from Golbez's control and allies with Cecil to take revenge on Zemus.
Abilities:
- Expert Lance User: Lance being his primary weapon, Kain is very skilled with using it. He can use it in close combat and mid distances. He can either wield it like a sword or throw it at his opponents with a great speed.
- Jump: This is a special ability of his. It's based on jumping a good height and making a lance attack as he lands. It's based on adding his weight along with the velocity. Kain often rides the wind, as he explains it.
Summons: n/a Magic: n/a Strengths:
- Speed
- Quick thinking
- Good leadership
- Loyal toward Baron and friends
Weaknesses:
- Human: Kain has human weaknesses, which means he can be hurt, injured, stabbed, etc. He doesn't have any special resistance toward anything.
- Lack of Magic: Kain has no control of any magic. He only relies to his fighting skills and his favoured lance.
- Weak-willed: He's not really proud of this, but Kain isn't the strongest willed person. He has been manipulated before and obviously cannot learn how to fight against it.
- Arrogance: It's a part of his personality and he cannot control it. This stands as a weakness in battles and even his daily life.
Weapon Abel's Lance Crushes: Rosa Farrell... Still and always. How did you find us? an ad from another site Role Play Sample: Following after his father's steps...
That was what he tried to do all these years. He became a dragoon, he became strong, he became determined. One could wonder why he chose this way, to follow after a man he used to hate so much. It was true that Kain wasn't close to his father, who was too strict and never showing love. There were only white and black for him. Gray and it's shades did not exist.
Perhaps, it was about being family. A young man would want to be like his father, having a perfectly strong and respective role model. It was only to be expected. Was it not? That was why he had to become the Commander of Dragoons and serve under Baron's King.
Kain had to leave that dream behind, feeling already accomplished with what he wanted. If his father was alive, he would be proud. At least, that was what he wanted to believe. Being the Commander of Red Wings was a full-time duty, yet it was what Kain Highwind needed. It made him feel very alive after years.
Pale blue eyes were looking over the maps, carefully examining the curves of the mountains on their desired destination. Long lean fingers traced over the route in a gentle stroke, then he tapped on a certain spot in the forests of the east. It would be a good training to visit this place before returning to Baron. If they were lucky, they would be returning home with some rare ground game.
Marking the location on the map, he offered it to the young soldier who had been standing next to him. It was a silent order, yet it was expected from Kain. He wasn't a man of a lot of words. Calm and calculating, even when there was a hint of sarcasm at times. As the younger male rushed to deliver the order, Kain took a careful glance down at the view, as his hands were resting against the wooden end of the ship. A green clearing were below them, a few trees were here and there. The early autumn was cool, yet had a certain softness in the wind. Kain could feel it against his face and even in his hair, as the wind danced with long blond strands, making them wave around his shoulders.
A Dragoon was always a Dragoon. Perhaps, no longer the Commander of them, but Kain still carried on the mantle. His bound with the wind was unbreakable. It was his cure, his addiction, his memories and possibly more than these.
"We've spotted something interesting, Sir!" Another soldier was approaching at Kain in a rush, looking to be excited about what he was telling. Slightly tanned face of the Commander was turned at the soldier, his expression was serious and careful. "Go on." Kain ordered with a strong tone, holding a certain natural elegance which was always a part of him.
"It's a dragon, Sir. A big and old one. Right in the woods of west." The soldier explained in a hurry, his wide eyes were showing he was either fascinated or scared by this new piece of information. "What should we do?"
In following moments, the ship was making a careful landing in a proper spot. The rest of the journey was continued with Kain and three soldiers walking by foot. As the Commander of the Red Wings, Kain took the lead. He was clad in his light Dragoon armour, quick and graceful. He no longer wore a helm which shadowed half of his face, hiding his eyes from others. There was a half circlet on his head, his soft blond hair was tied up in a high pony tail, long enough to reach his waist. His favoured lance was in his left hand, held in a loose grip.
He could feel the uncertainty growing on the soldiers' shoulders, as they approached closer and closer to the location of the dragon. Only in minutes, they could hear the heavy breathing coming from ahead, echoing through trees. It was there.
Their steps became slower and more silent, until they finally had the dragon in their view. The creature was quite big and heavy, black scales were shining under the early morning sun like metal. Curled up like a giant lizard, the ancient creature was breathing loudly. Giant head was resting on top of claws. Eyes were half hooded and tired. It wasn't the tiredness of the moment. It was the tiredness of many long years. The dragon was quite old, as Kain noticed. The blond Dragoon could tell since he used to take care after his father's dragon. He was old aswell, no longer able to fly. Most believed it was useless to bother with him, but Kain refused such a thing. The old dragon was what was left from his father. It was the last remain of his existence, his memories, his very being. Kain couldn't let it go. He couldn't let him go.
"Should we..." The soldier in his left started, unable to finish his sentence. He was a little frozen, not having enough courage to face a dragon. But that was understandable. Dragons were ancient creatures. Lethal and mischievous. Facing them without fear wasn't for everyone.
No.
It was just following after his father's steps... It had to be it.
"You all stay here." Kain ordered and handing his lance to one of the soldiers. But his men weren't accepting this easily. "But, Sir! It's too dangerous to go unarmed. Allow us to help you." One soldier protested, as the others nodded in agreement. They respected their Commander and liked him in one piece. Facing a dragon alone was suicide, especially how they didn't know it's nature. A dragon couldn't be tamed.
"Do as I say. Stay here." He ordered sharply, then noticed the concern in his men's eyes. His expression was softening. "I'll be fine, I promise." Then he stepped into the clearing, approaching at the laying dragon. Red eyes met pale blue ones, none were blinking. It was almost like a game of courage. But the dragon didn't move from it's place, just watching carefully, as the blond man approached. Soldiers were holding their breaths behind, remaining in their places.
Kain gave a slight bow at the dragon and stopped right before it's head. Then he went down on his knees to level himself with the old creature. His left hand was raised, reaching for the dragon's nose slowly. He was moving slow and careful, not wanting to make anything sudden.
When his bare palm was finally being pressed against the dragon's nose, Kain heaved a small sigh and closed his eyes for a moment. The dragon was simply allowing him to touch, laying there and fixing his red eyes on the Dragoon.
"My dream was to follow after my father's steps." Kain spoke gently in a whisper, talking to the dragon. Tender. He could remember the day his father's dragon passed away. He could remember how lost he felt. How alone he became. But he didn't let the dragon die alone. He couldn't. "Now I see him everywhere." And he leaned down to place a kiss on the dragon's nose.
He was really everywhere. Kain was not alone.
