Appearance Sephiroth is a taller man, standing somewhat in excess of six foot, with a build which most say belies his unnatural powers. His eyes are often described as a luminous green, the same color as Mako in its natural state, and glow visibly in dim light with an eerie green glow, and his pupils are slitted like a cat's. Sephiroth's hair is a dark shade of silvery gray, and is in no particular style at all, seeming to simply hang loose and free down his back, with no care given to it at all.
Sephiroth's attire is commonly seen as a black coat of some sort, with long sleeves and usually with a high collar, reaching down to near his ankles, and open in the front, often revealing his chest. Under the coat he will usually wear a pair of dark pants and boots. Adorned on each shoulder is a silvery-white pauldron, and a bracer of the same material is on each of his wrists.
Personality: [[Courtesy of the FF Wiki.]]
Sephiroth's personality is one of cold ruthlessness. Prior to his madness, he was not particularly anti-social, as he has friends in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- and willingly tells Zack, and Tifa about Mako and Materia on Mt. Nibel. All the same, his cold exterior and professional attitude turn people away. Sephiroth is intelligent and respectful to those he deems worthy - he considers Professor Gast Faremis a great scientist, but looks down on his father, Professor Hojo, describing him as "a walking mass of complexes". In Crisis Core, Sephiroth maintains an outwardly professional demeanor, but is loyal and friendly to a select few, and has a dry sense of humor. He is confident to the point of arrogance, but as the strongest SOLDIER alive, it could easily be argued he has the right to be. Well-spoken and somewhat graceful, Sephiroth is universally calm, collected, and in control. He can be frustrated and caught off guard, but this rarely happens.
Following his fall into insanity, Sephiroth retains most of the above personality traits, but becomes murderous and vengeful. He also develops something of a messiah complex, proclaiming several times he is "the chosen one", destined to lead the Planet and become a god. In Dissidia Final Fantasy, Kefka calls him "Just another sadist with a god complex. Like THAT'S anything special!" His intelligence has increased vastly following his time in the Lifestream where he absorbed the knowledge of the Ancients. At one point, Sephiroth even says he is greater than the Ancients. He has become cruel and enjoys mentally torturing Cloud. In Advent Children, in one of his iconic lines, asks Cloud what he cherishes so he may simply take it from him. Sephiroth is fiercely devoted to Jenova and her cause, even though her body serves as little more than his avatar. However, it is also stated that he himself is an agent towards Jenova's will.
Interestingly, in Dissidia, there was at least one hint that Sephiroth may have some sadness despite his nature, as Cecil Harvey tells Sephiroth before fighting him that "there is sorrow in [Sephiroth's] wintery eyes." In addition, in both Dissidia games, when he is defeated, he calmly remarks, "I willfall into the shadows", implying that either he accepts defeat, or simply doesn't care.
History: Sephiroth was born the child of Professor Hojo and Luecrcia Crescent. In an experiment called the Jenova Project, Hojo injected cell samples from the alien lifeform Jenova into the pregnant Lucrecia. The unborn Sephiroth would merge with these Jenova Cells, and would be born and raised as a super soldier. He was told nothing of his mother or father, save that his mother was named "Jenova" and died during childbirth. Sephiroth was incredibly strong, even from a young age and with minimal training, gaining worldwild fame after only a few missions. He was well aware, even from chilhood, that he was different from all those around him, but it would not be for several years that he could find out exactly why he was different.
Sephiroth came to be the personal bodyguard of President Shinra, being called in whenever the President's life was threatened. He was called in for one such event to battle the forces of AVALANCHE, and after a battle and conversation with their leader, is profoundly effected. He was later sent to "rescue" Professor Hojo from defecting to AVALANCHE.
Sephiroth was ordered to inspect the Mako Reactor outside of Nibelheim in what would become his final mission. Among t he small group accompanying him are a handful of Shinra MPs, and Zack Fair. At the reactor, Sephiroth finds a large chamber laveled "JENOVA", containing a strange, feminine-looking creature. When Zack suggests there may be a connection, Sephiroth flies into a rage.
Deeply disturbed with the strange creature bearing the same name as his mother, Sephiroth makes his way to Shinra Manor and begins reading the research notes in the basement library. What he learns there drives him mad and enrages him nearly beyond words. He comes to believe Jenova was a Cetra, and that he was the last living Cetra, and that the human race should be destroyed for failing to aid the Cetra from a disaster, which in reality was Jenova itself.
Sephiroth proceeded to destroy and raze Nibelheim to the ground, as well as slaughtering nearly the entire population of the town. He then returns to the reactor to claim Jenova's remains. He is confronted by Tifa, Zack and Cloud. Tifa takes up Sephiroth's Masamune and attacks Sephiroth, but is effortlessly disarmed and dealth a near mortal wound. Zack confronts Sephiroth and after a long battle, is defeated and tossed out of the chamber. Cloud enters the chamber and takes up Zack's Buster Sword and runs Sephiroth through from behind.
Sephiroth survives even such a devastating wound as this, and slices off Jenova's head, taking it with him. Sephiroth stumbles from the room, batting aside and stabbing Cloud when he tries to attack him again, only for Cloud to summon strength born of desperation and fear and hurl Sephiroth away. Sephiroth rises to his feet and slowly stumbles to a ledge. He notes that in his current state he would be unable to defeat Cloud, and leaps into a pool of Mako, apparently falling to his death.
Sephiroth fell into the Lifestream, his willpower too great to allow himself to be consumed. He travels the Lifestream for several years, increasing both his power and knowledge, and eventually restoring his body in a cave at the Northern Crater. His physical form is encased in a cocoon of Mako so that he can recover, though his will and power are free to wreak havoc across the entire planet. He controls Jenova's cells to take on the form of his body to enact his plans.
Hojo, meanwhile, injects Zack, Cloud, and all of the other Nibelheim survivors with Sephiroth's cells, turning them into Sephiroth clones, and testing out his theory of the "Jenova reunion".
Several years after his death, Sephiroth puts out the call for the Reunion. Jenova's remains are taken control of, where they break containment from Shinra headquarters, where they assume Sephiroth's form. He then releases Cloud and the AVALANCHE members, and kills President Shinra. Cloud, seeing Sephiroth's Masamune as the weapon used to murder President Shinra, suspect that Sephiroth is alive and sets out to find him and settle the score.
He is first encountered on the cargo ship the party takes passage on, where he alludes to the Jenova Reunion. He appears much later in Nibelheim, where he again makes reference to the Reunion. At the Temple of the Ancients he reveals his full plans -- to summon Meteor to heavily wound the Planet and then take control of the massive amount of Lifestream that will be gathered to heal the resulting impact wound, and become a god, ruling over the entire Planet.
Cloud succeeds in gaining the Black Materia, but Sephiroth controls the Jenova cells inside Cloud and forces him to hand the materia over to Sephiroth. Aeris tries to use the White Materia to summon Holy, but Sephiroth as Jenova impales her from behind, killing her. Aeris had succesfully summoned Holy, but Sephiroth held the spell back with his sheer willpower.
Cloud tracks down Sephiroth in the Northern Crater and destroys Jenova in his form, reclaiming the Black Materia. He hands it to a party member to hold. Sephiroth then summons an illusion of Nibelheim's destruction to break Cloud's mind, revealing that his memories are a lie. He t aunts Cloud, saying he is nothing more than a cluster of Jenova cells that assumed "Cloud's" identity. Sephiroth's manipulations shatter Cloud's mind, while Sephiroth projects an illusion of Tifa to convince the other party members to bring the Black Materia to Cloud.
Sephiroth then reveals his true body as Cloud hands over the Black Materia and he uses it to summon Meteor. The crater collapses as the five Weapons are released from their sleep to protect the Planet, and Sephiroth creates a powerful energy barrier over the crater.
With the Weapon's occupying his enemies, Sephiroth begins morphing his body into a form fitting a god. Cloud eventually recovers and the party manage to pierce the energy barrier around the crater by use of Shinra's massive cannon the Siter Ray, and track down Sephiroth again.
They find him at the Planet's core, blocking Holy. They do battle with his odd, larval form called Bizarro-Sephiroth. Upon being defeated, Sephiroth emerges as the angelic Safer-Sephiroth, an angelic being with god-like power. He is eventually defeated, but his mind endures and assaults Cloud and his allies as they attempt to flee the crater. He attacks Cloud's mind, pulling him into a mental battle as he attempts to overpower and take control of Cloud. But Cloud has grown stronger and, with strength born of desperation once more, manages to defeat Sephiroth.
Beaten, battered, bloody and broken, Sephiroth dissolves into the Lifestream, seemingly destroyed for good.
Several years later, despite his death Sephiroth is still an active threat, terrorizing the entire planet. His immersion in the Lifestream has tainted it with Geostigma and infecting nearly the entire planet, causing fatigue, open sores and eventual death in extreme cases. It is a manifestation of Jenova's will tainting the Lifestream and its cells merging with and infecting the citizens of the Planet. Cloud has also become infected, and suffers from crippling pains and halluginogenic visions of Sephiroth.
Cloud soon finds himself confronted by three young men, all with the same distinctive silver hair and Mako-green eyes as Sephiroth. The three, Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz, are revealed to manifestations of Sephiroth's will. They believe they are guided by Jenova, and seek out Jenova's cells in order to be reunited with their "mother", unaware of Sephiroth's true purpose of acquiring a new body.
Kadaj absorbs Jenova's cells and Sephiroth, exerting his control, transforms Kadaj's body into his own form, returning himself to life. Sephiroth faces Cloud and reveals his plan to taint the Lifestream so that he may control it and use the Planet as a space vessel to find a new planet for him to rule.
Cloud is easily overpowered by Sephrioth, despite him holding back so greatly. He taunts Cloud as he is about to deal a final blow, but Cloud is suddenly reinvigorated by the memory of his friends and family and attacks Sephiroth with unexpected strength. Sephiroth was caught off-guard and destroyed by Cloud's final attack. As he fades away, leaving Kadaj's body behind, he proclaims "I will...never be a memory."
Abilities:
- Immeasurable Will: The power of Sephiroth's will is immense and impossible to quantify or calculate. He has managed to hold himself together in the Lifestream after his death through sheer force of will, and retain full awareness and sense of self even when in such a disembodied state. His force of will is so grand and powerful, that it can often be felt by those not psychically attuned as a sheer malevolence and alien cunning or intelligence. Attempts to read or interfere with his mind are often balked or outright repulsed by the sheer scope, power and utter malignance of his mind and will. His will is strong enough to enable him to literally ignore pain and damage of all degrees, and fight even when horribly wounded, right up until a lethal blow is landed.
- Superhuman Potential: Sephiroth's full power has never been displayed, but it is abundantly clear he possesses superhuman prowess in all physical areas. His strength, resilience, speed, reflexes, and agility are all incalculably greater than a normal human, and even several times greater than other First Class SOLDIERS. He has been shown to easily fend off Zack Fair while sitll holding back a great deal, and simultaneously fight off both Genesis Rhapsodos and Angeal Hewley simultaneously without any signs of great effort. Such displays of his power include effortlessly slicing the massive Sister Ray cannon into pieces, carving through concrete and metal of any thickness with only glancing strikes, swinging Masamune faster than the eye can track and levying countless blows in the space of an instant, making leaps that cover vast distances and can crack and destroy the ground at his launch point, and can run and move at speeds beyond a normal human's ability to track.
- Telekinesis: Sephiroth's telekinetic powers are largely undefined, but noticably powerful in the few uses they have seen. He has been shown to use his telekinetic abilities to send several large chunks of rubble and debris flying toward Cloud during a battle, and can similarly deflect projectiles in this manner. Sephiroth is also capable of using his t elekinetic abilities to enable himself to levitate and even fly at extremely high levels of speed, and with great control.
- Telepathy: Sephiroth's telepathic ability is ambiguous at best. He has been clearly shown to mentally communicate, and over great distances, and to multiple people simultaneously. The true scope of his telepathic abilities are largely unexplored and unknown, but likely just as vast and powerful as his other abilities.
- Teleportation: Sephiroth displays the ability to teleport over varying distances, depending largely on his current physical condition as well as his location and knowledge of where he is. On a world or location he knows well, he would be capable of teleporting to any location on said world. At other times, he is restricted to places where he has been and knows well enough, or anywhere within his line of sight.
- Illusions: Sephiroth is well capable of casting illusions of many types. He can either create them in the air and project them to all at hand, or project them directly into the mind of one person or a handful of people. These illusions are frighteningly real, and while they cannot inflict physical harm, their sheer realism can sometimes cause foes to mentally injure themselves.
- Regenerative Abilities: As his many resurrections and impossible escapes from seeming death indicate, Sephiroth has impressive regenerative abilities. While not immediately evident, Sephiroth's body is in a constant state of renewal and regeneration, contributing to the difficulty of actually defeating him. Most wounds inflicted on him will be near-instantly restored, with even massive gashes and gaping wounds sealing over within mere seconds. Most times, any wounds inflicted on him will be restored in the time it takes one to blink. What this means is that his body is kept whole and functioning, even through the most protracted of battles.
- Magic: Sephiroth was a master of virtually every type of magic known to his world, and could employ it without the limitations of Materia, after his immersion in the Lifestream. He was a master of virtually every form of magic known to his home world, and even more besides, including some spells and abilities thought only usable by monsters and demons. He commonly employed magic to produce shockwaves from his sword, as well as conjuring simple bolts and blasts of magic in concert with his swordplay to overwhelm foes.
- Reunion: Reunion is a skill wherein Sephiroth's signature black angel wing emerges from his right shoulder. When this skill is active, Sephiroth's already impressive powers are increased yet further, to their purported "god-like" levels, and he gains access to his devastating "Heartless Angel" ability. This state also grants him the ability to fly under his own power, without employing his telekinesis to do so.
Summons: None.
Magic: Many said Sephiroth was a master of virtually every known type of magic in existence on his home world, and even beyond. This is, terrifyingly, not mere rumor, and is actual fact; Sephiroth is a master of all types of magic.
Strengths:
- Peerless Swordsman: Sephiroth was lauded by nearly anyone who fought against him as a virtually peerless swordsman -- very few could even fight effectively against him, fewer still could match him, and the number who exceeded his skill could be counted on one hand. His wielding of the Masamune was both frighteningly precise, impossibly fast, and monstrously powerful, combining to make him deadly even when using just his blade.
- Vast Intelligence: Sephiroth's intelligence and wisdom is incalculable after his immersion in the Lifestream and his absorption of the knowledge of the Ancients. His intelligence is displayed more in his cunning and wicked manipulation of events to favor his own personal interests, and even then it is done in subtle ways so as not to be immediately obvious.
Weaknesses:
- Insane: There can be no doubt about it -- Sephiroth is undeniably insane. Driven and focused, yes, but insane. He delights in cruelty and forging his own path at the expense of any and all others, often cutting down those in his way for simply being a hindrance. He does not work well with others, nor does he forge alliances, even when it would be highly beneficial to do so.
- Obsessions: Sephiroth is literally obsessed with fulfilling his own ambitions, as well as carrying out the will of Jenova. He is also obsessed with torturing Cloud and toying with him, delighting in the repeatedness of his near-breaking of the other man's mind. When confronted with a choice between near anything else and one of these three routs, Sephiroth will unerringly choose to follow them rather than his current task, whatever it may be.
- Powerlust: Sephiroth is driven by a near primal instinct to seek out powerful opponents to test his mettle against, and learn new ways of combat and battle from them, while simultaneously destroying them before they can possibly rival his own power or destroy him. The drawbacks to this are obvious, when coupled with the next weakness.
- Holds Back: Sephiroth is filled with such a confidence in his own abilities that it borders on arrogance. He always holds back from using his true potential, barely displaying and using a fraction of his powers, and always uses just enough effort and power to crush a foe, though just as often it leads to him being defeated by foes he could have easily bested were he to use his full power, or simply exert more effort into the battle.
- Not Invincible: A fact which Sephiroth often forgets, is that he is not truly invincible. He is remarkably powerful, and has proven nigh-impossible to kill permanently, but his defeat is not out of the question, and he has been defeated numerous times before to prove this.
Weapon: Masamune: Sephiroth's trademark weapon, and a blade that is almost as well-known as the man himself. A custom-made nodachi, with an inordinately long hilt and a seven-foot long blade. Its composition is unknown, but it is able to stand up to the punishment subject upon it by Sephiroth's wielding of it, and it can withstand the magical force channeled through it without damage. Sephiroth is able to summon his signature blade to his hand from any conceivable distance or location, as well, causing it to simple materialize in his grasp.
Crushes: None.
