Appearance Gifted with all manner of athleticism, Lycus obviously isn’t built like a mack truck or anything of the sort, though he is functionally strong and well-muscled. He stands about six feet one inch tall. Though he tends to do most of his work in a city setting, around cold concrete, his upbringing was very nature-oriented and he possesses various scars and a considerable tan to his skin as a representation of that. He has straight jet black (or at least really dark brown) hair that hangs down almost to his neck and a little scruff on his chin the majority of the time. In contrast to his dark appearance, he has fairly light eyes, almost a gray color.
His attire is often simple and lightweight, and he doesn’t really ever change out of the clothing he uses in performing jobs for the guild. He wears sleeveless armor made of leather and hide, as well as thick gauntlets on his forearms and boots made of the same material. His pants are simple, unarmored, and thin to allow for the maximum amount of movement. He has a sheath for his shamshir on his back, and a few small pouches over his right shoulder to allow him to store various things, not the least of them his dagger. And that be all.
Personality: Vale was cut out to be a thief, no doubt about it. He has the confidence to pilfer and plunder. He has the craftiness to adapt to changing circumstances. He can sometimes talk his way out of even the worst of situations...or to create the best of them. And surprisingly, though he can be a jerk at times, he's all for the whole honor among thieves thing. If all that isn't enough, he's actually not a bad leader as one of the more senior members of the guild. He's a guy some of the others want to hate at times, but they respect too much to do so. It's not that he's a miserable guy...smarmy, not miserable. In reality, a good portion of the guild respects him, and he's nothing if not a guy who loves a good laugh at times and even good comradeship...even if he might get some of those laughs at his comrade's expense.
That's not to say he does everything right. For a thief, he sure is not the most patient guy in the world, tending to rush things if they start to get on his nerves. Call it a temper or whatever, but it's certainly not an asset. Part of it is a result of the fact that he tips over on the meter from confident to overconfident, especially when he's questioned on his ability to do something. It's more of a hot-bloodedness than anything, because when he's been crossed, all bets are off and he'll go to lengths to make sure the other person is repayed. ....But sometimes he can just be an overall douche, too. Which means he has crossed his fair share of people and gotten himself into trouble, too. So while he might be good at what he does...he's certainly not good at endearing himself to the world beyond the rest of the guild by any means.
History: Vale grew up near a mine, of all places. How did he end up the thieves guild in a major city that is little more than a pile of rubble now, you ask? Well, I'll tell you. His childhood was nothing especially exciting - he just had a lot of outdoor space to run around in. He climbed trees and such as that to entertain himself. It was when he got a little older that he came under the influence of a group of young men who had moved out to work in the mine. They convinced him, as a young, impressionable child, to start climbing in windows, grabbing something important, and sneaking out. And he'd do it...and the thrill got to be pretty exciting to him. So he kept doing it on occasion. And once he finally got caught doing it...it was time for him to leave the little mining colony, anyway. His father had been killed in a small cave-in, and his mother decided it was time for them to move away. So as a young teenager, the city of Junon became his playground, and he became no less mischievous.
By nineteen, a drop out from a Shinra military program, he found himself with a five-year prison stint for attempting to steal from a specific Shinra-funded institution...and succeeding before he was eventually tracked down and arrested. By this time, his brother, who turned out to be a decent influence on him, had moved away, and his mother had remarried. So he was left to stew in prison, where he actually spent nearly two years before a certain man came to him in his prison cell. The deal the man offered was a good one for a guy who had been living off of crappy food for two years, and Vale decided to take him up on the offer. It offered gil and a chance to fit in somewhere now that the rest of his family had moved on. What more could he ask for?
So he performed a few jobs for them as his initiation, and by twenty-two, he was a full-fledged member of the small band that came to be known affectionately as the "thieves guild", after similar organization in the days when guilds were prevalent. Vale quickly worked his way up the ranks (though there is really no leadership structure) over time. He had a part in making the guild a little more professional after the fall of meteor, and joined the rest of the guild as they moved into a new base concealed by the ruins of Midgar (as Shinra had begun catching onto them in Junon) and began recruiting some new members.
Abilities:
- Athleticism: Vale’s greatest asset is his immense athleticism and the various ways he has trained himself to make the best use of it. Vale is immensely skilled as a free-runner, able to traverse most any environment, manmade or natural, with the greatest of ease. It’s his greatest asset as a thief, as he’s not the best techie in the world, nor is he an excellent pickpocket. He can just get into places better than anyone, and then give people the slip since they don’t have a great chance to catch him.
- Close-Quarters Combat: Since he thinks guns are pretty tacky for his line of work, Vale has trained himself pretty extensively as a close-quarters combatant. He uses his athleticism in his fighting style…as well as whatever else will get him by. He prefers to keep fighting to fists if at all possible, but he’s skilled with his sword when a set of knuckles just won’t do the trick.
- Information Gathering: Vale can easily be called one of the guild’s key information brokers, because he just seems to have a contact everywhere and if he doesn’t have a contact, he’ll charm or intimidate his way into gaining a contact, whether temporary or permanent. He’s got something of a golden tongue, as mentioned above. One plenty of people wouldn’t mind cutting out.
Summons: N/A
Magic:
- Blind
- Silence
Strengths:
- As crafty as they come
- Surprisingly, a decent leader
- Resilient
Weaknesses:
- Cocky
- Has bouts of immaturity
- Impatient
Weapon Shamshir and jambiya: Vale wields a curved blade known as a shamshir, which is a few inches shorter and wider in the middle than the typical longsword and, due to its curve, basically a one-sided weapon. His only other weapon is a small, curved, very sharp dagger known as a jambiya that he often applies poison to for practical purposes but doesn’t actually use all that much in general combat. What better distraction is there than to force a random person into a spastic attack from poison? It should be mentioned that his gauntlets can block against smaller bladed weapons.
Crushes: None.
