Appearance:
Standing at 5’11’’, Karn tends to the taller side without appearing overwhelmingly large. This sense of scale is enhanced somewhat by his strong frame, the product of years of rigorous fighting and training. His body is thick and muscular, especially around the pectorals and biceps. Karn’s skin is an average caucasian tone, appearing neither particularlly tanned nor pale. It doesn’t take a long look at Karn to realize that he’s a soldier; his appearance and his bold mannerisms seem to scream it.
His face and jaw bear more square-ish features, lacking any sense of delicacy or angle in their appearance. His eyes are a dark brown in color, their most notable characteristic being the rarity with which they express anything but a stern, determined appearance. This had led many a person to describe his eyes as his most intimidating feature, though his few close friends will say that they can, and on occasion do, appear quite soft and friendly. His hair is dark black, falling down just past his shoulders, usually combed neatly so as not to allow any to fall over his face. On rare combat occasions, it will be gathered into a ponytail reaching just to the tips of his shoulders.
Most of the time, he is seen in his ShinRa soldier’s gear -- even when not on duty, he tends to shed the armor but continue to wear the deep blue clothing worn beneath. Even when off-duty, he always remains armed unless specifically ordered otherwise; as such, a heavy black pistol strapped in a holster on his right thigh is a permament fixture of his appearance.
Personality:
While someone who spent most of his childhood fighting through the streets of Midgar's slums might be expected to have a strong-antisocial, brooding streak, this is hardly the case in Karn. Rather, he displays a mix of an experienced soldier's stern, stoic demeanor with a surprisingly approachable "one-of-the-guys" attitudes off the battlefield and among friends.
At first meeting, Karn often comes off as rigid, disciplined, and even unfriendly. When dealing with unfamiliar acquaintances, Karn plays the role of a soldier straight, keeping his guard up and choosing his words carefully. When he senses that it's possible, he'll try to play the intimidation card to the best of his ability, coming off commanding and threatening in order to keep people off-balance and under his perceived control.
Beneath the soldier's exterior, however, Karn becomes something of a friendly frat-boy type of character, with a strong favor for drink and comradery, especially among his fellow fighters. Loud, boisterous, and occasionally flirtatious, the inner Karn is a loyal, if loud, friend and devoted ally. He also has no problem discussing his violent past, almost viewing his years on the streets of Sector 3 as a badge of honor rather than a source of pity.
Since Meteorfall, Karn's demeanor within the company has gone through something of an identity crises. With ShinRa's future as a whole seeming uncertain, and the exact motives of Rufus ShinRa unclear, Karn has found himself unsure of just how to conduct himself within the company -- which has led to an even more quiet, stoic approach when discussing ShinRa itself in these days.
History:
Karn was born the second of two sons to Dias and Chrysalia Fenix, a modest couple living beneath the Plate in the slums of Sector 3. His father, a particularly self-righteous and mistrustful man, kept his two sons on a close leash for fear that they would be mugged, killed, or kidnapped on the rough streets of Midgar. An avid shooter himself, Dias taught his sons (at his mother’s protest) to shoot at a young age -- Karn had a pistol in his hand even before he hit puberty, though he wasn’t always quite confident in using it.
Those skills would soon become survival skills for Karn and his elder brother Djar. During an anti-ShinRa protest in Sector 3, the gatherered protestors eventually turned violent, setting fires and looting the houses of several local residents. Dias and his two sons clashed with the looters and arsonists, which led to their own house being set ablaze. While their father continued to fight to defend his home, 14 year-old Karn and 16 year-old Djar escaped out the back, only to watch their house burn to the ground from their hiding place before ShinRa MPs finally quelled the disturbance.
Left on their own, the two youths began to wander the streets of Sector 3 to eke out their survival. Djar, the more street-savvy of the two, managed to get them in with a local street gang known as the Zoloms giving the brothers an added sense of protection and a makeshift family to help provide for them. The two brothers’ tenure with the Zoloms lasted for two years, until a police crackdown led to the gang’s dissolution. In the sting, Karn was separated from Djar, marking the last time he would ever see his brother.
Upon his release from a low-level ShinRa prison, Karn, now 16, took his talents to the market, and spent two years as hired muscle in Sector 3, working odd jobs ranging from a club bouncer to a bodyguard to a paid killer -- anything to keep the gil coming. When he was 18, Karn stumbled onto a confrontation at a Sector 3 bar, where he ended up defending a man from several attackers. Unknown to Karn at the time, the man was himself a low-level ShinRa officer, who expressed his gratitude by wiping Karn’s minor criminal record and securing him a spot with the MPs.
When his particular talent for fighting was noticed, Karn received additional training and was assigned to a ShinRa infantry unit, which was later deployed to guard duty in Junon. Karn was one of the fortunate survivors of the WEAPON attack on Junon, and subsequently returned to Midgar when the Sister Ray was taken to ShinRa headquarters. He continued to serve his tenure until Meteorfall, after which he clung to what little remained of the corporation in an attempt to offer his talents to help the company if its rebuilding were ever to become a reality.
Abilities: (no more then 5 at first. After 50 posts you can add more)
- Firearms: Karn is an expert with most forms of guns, able to shoot quickly and accurately even in a heated fight.
- CQC: From a combination of years on the street and his formal military training, Karn is a highly capable close-quarters fighter, both with bare hands and his combat knife.
- Tactical Savvy: With sharp reflexes honed by years of fighting, Karn has a strong mind for appraising tactical situations and making plans for victory, making him an effective battlefield leader.
Summons: None
Magic: None (Karn was never a skilled Materia user, and currently has no magical abilities; this may change with time)
Strengths:
- Physical strength: Karn is in top physical form, making him a solid fighter and generally reliable for anything requiring physical feats.
- Iron will: After years in gangs, working as private muscle, and a tenure in the army, Karn's willpower is rock-solid, though sometimes to a fault.
- Leadership: His bold character and strong will often lead Karn to take control in a crisis -- even if he's not the most charismatic, his track record and intimidating demeanor often speak for themselves.
Weaknesses:
- Trust issues: Given his difficult past, Karn is slow to trust others; he also has a bit of a self-confidence issue, and often views others as incapable of measuring up to the task of assisting him.
- Difficulty with magic: Karn never did have an affinity for using Materia, and this has translated into his continual inability to use magic. With enough training he could probably learn it passable, but he'll never be a master mage.
- Impetuous: Though his physical strength and skill with a gun make him dangerous, Karn is often too eager to turn to violence as a first solution to problems. On more than one occasion, he's jumped into a fight too soon and gotten in trouble for it.
Weapons:
- Heavy pistol: His father's gun before his death, always kept at Karn's side.
- Various firearms: Depending on the tactical situation, Karn can draw on a variety of weapons from small submachineguns to heavy sniper rifles and in between.
- Combat knife: A serrated combat knife for close-in fighting.
Crushes: None at the current moment

Role Play Sample:
A few years ago, Karn had worn a ShinRa uniform; more specifically, a prison uniform during his incarceration after the breakup of the Zoloms. Today, he found himself wearing a different ShinRa uniform: that of a Military Policeman, the exact folks who had put him in jail in the first place. It was ironic enough to cause Karn to chuckle lightly to himself as he adjusted the straps on his shoulder armor.
It was quite a reversal of roles, when he thought about it. In his earlier teen years he had spent his days mugging and fighting to eke out his living in the slums; today, he was suiting up to bring down some more people just like him. The Leviathans, they called themselves, and according to the rumors they were one of the worst in any of the slums, let alone merely in Sector 3. Part of him felt like a hypocrite, riding with the MPs to bust up some youth who were trying to survive they same way he had, but reminded himself that this was far more important. Not only did this job give him a steady living, but it gave him the opportunity to fill ShinRa's enemies with lead... Something he enjoyed a little too much.
As the MP's truck drove through the slum streets, it was pelted by rocks, empty bottles, and anything else the locals could find to toss at it. In reality, they were discontented citizens upset with ShinRa's rule. To Karn, however, they looked just like the protestors who had burned his house to the ground and killed his parents. His index finger flicked against the safety of his gun, but he knew better. Much as he wanted to shoot a few, those weren't his orders.
Finally, they reached a large, if nondescript, house in the slums. As soon as the truck approached, the two muscular men outside reached for their swords, only to be gunned down by the MP who had been riding shotgun as he dropped down from his seat. The whole process was quick -- the doors were busted down, the MPs rushed in, and Karn counted at least three gang members down by his bullets alone. A bloody end, but a fitting one.
A fourth tried to get the drop on him as he rounded a corner, but Karn's reflexes were quick to respond. As the thug pushed the gun from his hand, Karn reached for the knife strapped onto his chest, wrenching the man's wrist with one hand and driving the serrated blade into his shoulder with the other. A swift punch was enough to put the man face-down on the ground, and Karn picked his gun back up as one of his comrades locked handcuffs onto his attacker and dragged him out to the truck.
It was enemies of ShinRa who burned our house... I can never get back at them, but at least I can stomp down on the ones we find from now on... That'll have to do.
As the last of the wounded were forced into the back of the truck, Karn flicked the safety back on his gun, slung it over a shoulder, and hopped on for the ride back to the precinct headquarters -- just another day at work.
